Is Final Fantasy XII worth the play?

1 : Anonymous2022/01/13 20:57 ID: s39gu0

I bought FFXII The zodiac age off Amazon, it going to arrive tomorrow. Iv seen alittle of its gameplay and it looks kinda nerve racking. Anyway I have a few questions if anyone wouldn't mind answering for me. I have not played this one before but the character designs looked really nice and I'm curious about it.

1.Is the Combat difficult? As someone who's mostly played turn-based rpgs, this seems like it'll be difficult to get used to.

2.Is the story good? If I was to be more specific,is it Final fantasy worthy.

The big thing I would say about FF12 is that the early part of the story is a bit of a slow burn. Give it time, and you'll find a deep story that can be compared to when Game of Thrones was good. It's absolutely worth it.

The story is basically just Star Wars

Difficulty wise 12 is probably the easiest FF to “break” and become super overpowered really early.

There are several instances of sequence breaks that open higher levelled areas where you can acquire near endgame equipment at only ~25% story progression.

Its a great FF game and in my top 3 along with VII and X

Final Fantasy VIII, Final Fantasy Tactics and Final Fantasy X say Hi.

No, it’s not difficult. If you’re good at the Gambit System you can set the game up to play itself. If you want to, you can also set it up to play like a turn-bases, so do whatever you’re comfortable with.

Story is great. I like it a lot. Gotta pay attention though. It’s got some points in the story to where you’ll be running around doing side quests and hunting Marks and it was easy the first time I played to forget what was actually going on in the story.

It is worth playing. It isn't a very difficult game. I found it like a single player MMO, characters* and story not quite as good as the best Final Fantasy games but an impressive world to explore.

*Except Balthier who is one of the best FF characters

Almost every game in the franchise is the best for soemone and borderline unplayable for someone else. This is true even for different versions of the same game.

You will not know if you like until you play it. That is why all games in the franchise deserve a play.

Now, for my personal opinion, the combat is not difficult. There is no difficult Final Fantasy game, and the game is good, it is in my top 5. But as I said, there are as many opinions as people that played the game (and even opinions for people that didn't play it), so go ahead an play it to see if you like it or not.

No, not particularly. It can be grindy, and tedious (hence why Zodiac Age's addition of a turbo mode was such a great move) but ultimately you'll be automating most of combat through the gambit system, so most encounters in FFXII will resolve by themselves.

Ehh. I think the setting of FFXII is really interesting, and the few scenes that don't feature your party members are good. But the main cast of characters is really dull and disjointed, and the main story is pretty uninspired. It's not the worst FF story, far from it. But it's pretty forgettable.

I hate to agree that the story was pretty forgettable...I beat it back when it came out but I Def can't explain wtf happened to the next person. I enjoyed it tho!

8 : Anonymous2022/01/13 21:47 ID: hsjkehx

It's excellent totally worth the play combat is different but easy once you get it and get gambits set up

9 : Anonymous2022/01/13 21:12 ID: hsjevbp

It’s an odd game in that the main character is absolutely not the protagonist. Also the story is kind of dull imo. The main appeal of ffxii to me is the staggering amount of side content and the gambit system that lets you “program” your characters to fight for you. I’d say, yes this game is absolutely worth playing in the long run.

10 : Anonymous2022/01/13 21:40 ID: hsjjcci

The combat is very different, building the character's behaviors through the Gambit system is almost a mini-game unto itself IMO.

And it's hands down my favorite in the series!

Nerve-wracking is definitely not a term I would associate with XII’s gameplay……most of it happens automatically.

You forgot to add "because I wanted that".

12 : Anonymous2022/01/13 21:32 ID: hsjhyjf

I just beat it last week on the switch. Really amazing game my personal top 3 final fantasy game.

1.) The combat is still techncially turn based, you have your ATB meter and you can pause and give your commands. Though what you mostly do is set-up gambits, i.e. you set up rules to automate combat behaviour so you don't have to micro-manage everything. Like, set something like, "If party member is below 60% HP -> Use Cure. (Or Cura or Potion or whatever you want them to use.) "Attack Enemy with lowest maximum HP" to get the small annoying enemies out of the way first ifnecessary, stuff like that. You can change these whenever, during combat, outside of combat etc. the game isn't particularily difficult and it's way too easy to overlevel.

2.) The story starts out intriguing and the individual cutscenes, dialogue and voice acting are among the best of the Final Fantasy series if not JRPGs in general. Though as it goes on the story kinda moves a bit in the background and the ending seems pretty rushed which is unfortunate. But nevertheless, the early cutscenes and conversations are really good for Final Fantasy standards. Especially concideirng the game is sandwhiched between FFX and FFXIII. (Now FFX probably has the better story and maybe even characters but just the dialogue and voice acting and cutscene direction is muuuuch better in FFXII.)

Only you can derive what worth is to you. Everyone’s worth is different, not a good question to ask. At least you asked for specifics

1) The combat isn't difficult. Just take your time and take it in. The more advanced stuff you'll get the hang of as you play. That's said, some fights you might find tedious or confusing.

2) I like the story I guess. It's not like top tier FF for me but I like the sort of focus on geopolitics if that's your thing. As other people will say it's kinda similar to Star Wars. The drawback is some characters just feel like they're just there to be there.

3) Don't feel forced into making your characters their default/initial job setup. The gambit system basically means you can do whatever the hell you want with them.

16 : Anonymous2022/01/13 22:21 ID: hsjpx8i

zodiac age is by far the easiest of all FF games i've played

personally i didn't really care for the characters and by extension i didn't really care for the story as well. for reference i think 8 has one of the most ludicrous stories ever but i loved it anyway because i loved the characters

if at any point you hit a wall, you can always hit up the trial mode at any point of the game to very effortlessly grind AP

Combat is semi turn based so it's not that much different to what you're used to. There's stuff later on that kind of plays to the semi-turn based aspect of it but it's not so different.

The build up is a little slow but even at the start the foundation of a great story is there and you can pick up on who you're gonna like for sure.

Multiple playthroughs with different builds and doing the gamebreaking stuff makes this game so much fun. Zodiac age, with all its QOL changes, has made it a top tier FF game.

Highly recommend trying it out at least, I'm sure you wouldn't regret it

18 : Anonymous2022/01/13 22:46 ID: hsjtsmu

The first time I played it, I had fun. It was definitely was a great game in my opinion.

19 : Anonymous2022/01/13 22:56 ID: hsjvcd6

Once you get understanding of the gambits you will be fine. This is actually my favorite FF. Then 6 and WOTL.

20 : Anonymous2022/01/13 23:13 ID: hsjxz5v

Yes, it’s worth playing.

It’s an adjustment but not super difficult. Optional fights will challenge you.

The story is great when it’s great and at times it’s forgettable. I liked it, the swashbuckling Star Wars pacing mixed with political intrigue.

21 : Anonymous2022/01/13 23:18 ID: hsjyoew

Looks complicated but isn’t.

22 : Anonymous2022/01/13 23:37 ID: hsk1go0

it depends on your criteria for worth it? if youre into mature stories about politics told through immersive storytelling with a different combat system thats difficult and rewarding then Id say give it a whirl! If youre into trash games that just hands you shit and looks flashy and slick then maybe give it a pass!

if you check it out say what up to my girl Fran

23 : Anonymous2022/01/13 23:50 ID: hsk3fhb

Yes play it dead

24 : Anonymous2022/01/13 21:07 ID: hsje3pe

The combat is pretty awful, in my opinion. As is the "license" system that, while freeing, does not cover its own butt in the logic department. I can use blue swords now, but I DUNNO about that red sword over there! Seems fishy! Herp derp, how do I wear this HAT?!"

The whole thing was just tedious.

...and much like 8, 9, and 10, the main character is not the main character of the narrative.

ID: hsjfo2r

Once I got used to the gambit system I actually quite enjoyed it, although then technically it means there's no combat system..

But ye. If you did it normally it would have been very frustrating.

ID: hsjfzmj

I can use blue swords now, but I DUNNO about that red sword over there!

Let's apply your logic to other games:

I am a Black mage, I can cast Fire, but I DUNNO about casting a bigger fire?

I a male character, so I can't equip a Ribbon? or I need an ability to equip a Ribbon?

I am a Final Fantasy VII character and I can't equip more than one ring?

If you are going to apply logic, then every game is just as bad.

25 : Anonymous2022/01/13 21:17 ID: hsjfl8r
no no, one of the worst
ID: hsjtg5e

Don't listen to Ondore's lies!

26 : Anonymous2022/01/13 22:14 ID: hsjosbq

It's easy, don't worry, the Zodiac Age is easier than the original even. It's kinda slow, not a button masher at all, if you get the gambit system you will not push a button during fights if you don't want to.

The story is good the first 2/3rds of the game, then it gets weaker, but it's good overall, not the best FF, not the worst.

Vaan and Penelo, the "main" characters aren't great, Penelo is absolutely irrelevant in the plot, like Yuffie levels of irrelevant, even worse, Vaan is a little better, but he should have been only a party member and not the main character, the real main character in the plot is Ashe, you can control whomever you want on the field and dungeons but you play as Vaan in cities god knows why. Also do you like Star Wars? Because the plot IS 100% Episode IV.
