Retro Gaming system built for windows 9x specially would love to get their hands on a working 9800xt 256mb agp card.

I used to have a 9700 pro back in the day ... it was a beast.

I had the 9800 Pro which was also a great card at the time.
ID: hh296rnI had the 256bit SE, obviously used omega drivers to get close to pro speeds. To this date it was probably my best bang for buck card. I even had the original Crysis (badly) on that card until I upgraded to an 8800.

Wasn't there a TV win version of that card? If so I used to have one. I used it to output my PC screen to a 40 inch Mitsubishi wide projection screen TV. Lol

ID: hh22w2sYeah. That was what it was called. Had the funky breakout box that you hooked input and output to, I think. It was great for watching movies on. Too fuzzy for PC gaming, although I have done that too.

Radeon 9000 series was legendary. Everyone I knew was upgrading to it for HL2 and CS:S. I remember when people were flashing their Radeon 9500s to turn them into 9700s.

This was the first thing in my life that I dreamed of having. It was too expensive for me to buy as a freshman in college but just cheap enough where id have thoughts about maxing out my low limit credit card to buy it. I was running an Nvidia GeForce 5200 and while it could run anything I wanted on low/medium, I knew this card could demolish anything I wanted to play. I couldn’t even touch the box, it was so high end, they put it in a locked glass case, away from the lowly 9600xt and 9200. I ended up saving and getting a 9600xt in the end. I put hours and hours on that 9600xt playing games like BF2 and Fear, and it ended up being my favorite graphics card to date. Mostly because I had to sacrifice so much for it and it felt like a huge accomplishment when I bought it. I love seeing kids with that look in their eyes at Microcenter browsing the current gen cards.

Bought one just to play the first far cry in all its graphical glory, the foliage and the water was awesome back in the day
ID: hh30inuThat one year (or so) far cry, half life 2 and doom 3 all came out almost at the same time. It was really insane, it seemed like the pace advancement was infinitely fast. Each of those three games pushed the envelope super far in different areas (outdoor environments, detail and believability, and dynamic lighting) all around the same time. Things have felt relatively stagnant ever since.

ID: hh2deedThe ATI 9xxx series "competed" with the Nvidia 5xxx series.
In reality, the 9500, 9700, and 9800 blew all of the 5000 series stuff out of the water. It was a real low point for Nvidia.
ID: hh2ji1bYes, but Nvidia took the crown back with the 6000 series because it supported DirectX 9.0c and Shader Model 3.0. HDR in Oblivion, beautiful water shaders… I remember being sad the X800 series couldn’t do the cutting edge effects even though it was pretty new.

Had a 9800 and 9700 of some variety back then.
Hands down the most impressive card I ever had was a refurb X800 XT PE direct from Ati. Some years later, there was a class action lawsuit, and they refunded the entire purchase price (~$250 iirc). A couple more years went by, and another class action lawsuit comes by, and they ended up sending me a 4000 HD series card. Think it went into an HTPC and eventually a brother in law put it into a household server. It might still be there…
My old 5870 ran until last year (thank goodness I got a replacement then) and the 4870 I still had in the kids PC is still good, but replaced due to feature compatibility.
You bet I fill out every class action suit form I see.
ID: hh26gvbThe first class action was because the solder mask on early production x800's didn't sufficiently cover several test points and through-holes, so moisture could infiltrate the PCB layers and cause a short to ground.
I actually have one I bought several years ago, first thing I did was touch those points with some silicone adhesive. I still use the card in an XP build.
Those were ATI's golden years; 2002-2006...then the 8800 was released and thoroughly fucked them.

I had 2 but I gave one to a buddy who lost it or threw it away or something.
ID: hh3br2iLol thats nuts. The 4870 was such a legit good card too. I bought mine on release for £180 and it was certainly a high end card at the time...I want that pricing back! I actually had a 3870x2 and sold it to buy the 4870 (with a little change too), because I was fed up with crossfire incompatibility. There was basically no performance drop because the gains between generations at that time was really huge.

I had a 9500 that modded into a 9500 Pro. I was on top of the world when that was a thing.
My friend bought a 9700 Pro used, that thing was amazing too.

Thats ATI's flagship gpu in 2003/2004. Before AMD purchased ATI.
