r/RBI is investigating itself after a mod seemingly attacked a user and the head mod helps covers it up.

1 : Anonymous2021/03/06 01:11 ID: lyqo6z

A now deleted mod post changed some of the rules in the subreddit. However, these new rules now contradict themselves. A long time lurker makes a post pointing this out as well as bring up another mod who attacked a user, then deleted all the posts and comments. Like all of their posts not even regarding the attack. Then, the head mod makes a post to clarify the new rules, and pretty clarifies not much. Users call for the mod who attacked someone to apologize. Head mod responds with "It is being addressed on the back-end. If you feel you're owed an apology feel free to send a message in modmail." which goes about as well as you can imagine.

The mod who had attacked a user is seen here issuing an apology. Downvote count makes me believe they don't accept the apology.

Head mod gets removed from mod team. Pretends to still act like a mod.

**This is my first drama post. I have no idea how to use remove reddit to get you all the juicy stuff. If someone wants karma, you could probably make this a much better post.

Confession: I thought RBI was a subreddit all about old baseball stats or a NES series: I never expected an investigation bureau.

ID: gpx06cj

The goal of the RBI (Reddit Bureau of Investigation) is to use the power of Reddit to solve mysteries.

Because that always goes well. Fecimus id, Reddit.

ID: gpxztmp

Right? The entire premise sounds like bad news bears.

ID: gpy9r5y

If you love the RBI game series, they brought it back a few years ago with the same retro arcade-style game play (as opposed to the more simulation-based MLB: The Show.) It was pretty much the only baseball going at my house in 2020, and through the divine intervention of my family's mad skills, the Royals won the series!

I did try to convince them to rename

to Reddit Investigation Services Professionals or to continue the baseball conflation, but you can't change a subreddit name.

ID: gpzaval

Oh, crap! Those idiots?

ID: gq0dcx1

A subreddit dedicated to the trivia of kinda cool runs batted in would probably be more valuable than what that sub is, if we're going to be perfectly honest.

ID: gpzl7br

Old baseball stats?!? We still use RBI, its just not as powerful as it was.

No lie I thought it was about the baseball video game.

Modder stickies post about “Everyone let’s calm down and have a Civil Discussion.”

In real life I'm in police work. As a result, I don't spend as much time here as I'd like to, though with my rapidly-approaching retirement, that's going to change soon.

What does being a cop have to do with the price of tea in China? Just say “I don’t have a lot of time to moderate but that may change soon.”

I'm not top mod, so this isn't a "hey, I want you to remove moderator so-and-so" post. This is instead going to be a clean modpost to start a civil discussion. Rule clarifications. Complaints. Concerns. Suggestions. Etc.

So you want a clean discussion about moderation without actively discussing every elephant in the room that deals with moderation?

Let's hear what you're thinking and feeling. I'll do my best to answer questions and provide clarification. If I cant answer something, I'll tell you that. If I need to discuss something with the mod team, I'll tell you that. If I can provide you an immediate answer, you'll get it.

All I'm asking is that we keep the discussion civil.

But your sole sticky thread is not allowing anyone to discuss every single problem between the moderation team and community on that subreddit... Which of course you’re redirecting all traffic to this one sticky thread on “Let’s chat...”

What’s the purpose of your community discussion?

The rules are being revisted: We're looking at changing the rules to a shorter list, but each rule having better clarification to avoid confusion and to ensure things that should stay up...stay up.

I don’t think this moderation is going to be able to fix this mess. I think the Admins need to step in to check for bad actors and ethical issues.

I mean:

It is being addressed on the back-end. If you feel you're owed an apology feel free to send a message in modmail.

This looks like to me bad actors are trying to hide toxicity behind modmail.

:EDIT: I will restructure my comment later. I’m on mobile. But this comment is a gem:

Ok. As our own rule states that if law enforcement is asking the public for assistance, it's okay for you to post your thread.

HOWEVER: The moment the comments start going political, rather than investigatory, your post will get nuked.

So, when you make your post, include a warning, okay? Once we start seeing "Hurr durr, Qtards are like methheads" and that kind of thing, it's going to get locked and removed for violating the No Politics rule.

Keep your commenters on topic and you'll be good.

That sound fair to you?

The Moderator is telling a community member that they must moderate their own posts or the post will be taken down.... (they kinda backtracked though)

Yeah the Admins seriously need to step in.

The real post is always in the comments

What does being a cop have to do with the price of tea in China?

Hero worshipping. Or in this case cops wanting to be worshipped.

You see it everywhere. Cops inserting that they are cops in the hopes that someone will worship their job and therefor them.

It's typically people who should never be a cop who do it. They entered the job for all the wrong reasons.

Just a clarification - the original mod post wasn't about changing the rules, it was basically just a complaint from a mod that people weren't following them. And that lead to people getting annoyed at the fact that the rules were so broad that it was basically impossible to post anything, as well as the fact that the rules were being enforced randomly or by some unknown criteria or just by the moderators whim.

This kind of stuff has been going on in that sub for a while, enough so that people went ahead and made

a while ago.

ID: gq17tmw

Thanks for pointing that out. I'll edit op as soon as I can. I was only able to piece information together, I wasn't able to catch the post before it got deleted.

This entire thing is a beautiful mess

ID: gpz6wny

I wouldn't call it beautiful but it's definitely a mess.

6 : Anonymous2021/03/06 20:07 ID: gq0a0ey

So I find it really funny that the "head mod" claims to be retired but still also considers himself the head mod and will still step in to handle subreddit issues. I was really pissed off with the way both he and the mod in trouble were still refusing to really admit fault and were making half-assed apologies. I ended up asking why the two of them were acting so hostile and angry towards everyone else and the head mod goes on to apologize and tell me that he didn't mean for their words to be vicious and hateful towards the subreddit's visitors. And then you have people responding below his reply to me calling him out as a huge hypocrite and that he was clearly still angry at the subreddit! It was absolutely beautiful to see that despite his attempts to defend himself we all knew that it was bullshit. Honestly, I agree that the admins need to step in, review the mods that are still in power including the two who are causing the most trouble, and figure out who can stay and who needs to leave for good.

Did it suddenly make less sense when you learned the sensible one is the cop, not the power tripping one?

8 : Anonymous2021/03/06 22:21 ID: gq119b5

The post by the mod that started it all didn't change any rules. It was only trying to enforce them in a verry rude/ranty way, and when people tried to question the mod that made the post, the mod was being evasive with their answers when asked what is allowed to be posted.

ID: gq18fkr

Thanks for pointing that out! I'll edit OP when I can.

9 : Anonymous2021/03/07 11:34 ID: gq37nuj

Verbatim, the mod that made the sticky post, said the things that are allowed here are the things that she doesn’t delete. So according to the most recent report from a moderator, the rules are if she likes it it stays, if she doesn’t it goes.

Am I the only one who agrees with that? Like...how else should you run a subreddit? Make rules that people always figure out a way to work around due to wording? I mean hell, every political subreddit has "Be Civil" in the rules, but we see how well that works, the insults that are low-key enough to pass mod muster all stay. The only way to run a subreddit of any decent size is to just straight up apply the smell test as rules, and tell people just not to piss the mods off. That seems draconian, but anything short of that leaves a system where people will skirt the rules by arguing minutiae of their wording, while violating them in spirit. This isn't a legal system where the punishment is grievous, the worst that can happen is an undeserved ban. People need to learn to take that shit in stride and not fret so much over it.

Got a link to the mod's "attack"?

ID: gq1786s

So the mod has deleted all the comments and now I guess their entire account. Like I said, idk how to use remove reddit and now I'm on mobile, but I did find someone in the post I linked who posted the link to the remove reddit deleted comments.

The mod apology you referenced towards the end has been deleted

Here was my contribution to the situation, when I’d finally reached my breaking point on the shit that mod was pulling. My post stayed up for about 2 hours and got a few hundred upvotes before the mod removed it.

"oh how surprising, that they're recognising someone's a woman... Oh it's to call them a "cunt"."

Nice. She was removed fwiw
