Not new. But the uncharted series and maybe the last of us.

You should look at Control. Wide-linear, really interesting world, and fun gameplay.

ID: hge3pjfYeah! It was available for PS Plus not too long ago. The Ultimate Edition. So you should be able to download it if you’ve been diligent about adding games to your library.
If not, the game is old enough where you can get it for cheap. I think it’s a ton of fun.

I’m expecting downvotes for this comment, but the closest game franchise in terms of structure I can think to God of War is the Tomb Raider reboot trilogy, the bigger difference is that the combat is more about ranged attacks, like if comparably you played God of War as Atreus. But beside that it is a similar semi linear structure, similar progression systems, a bunch of puzzles, high production values and large scale set pieces. I will say that I personally did not care for the story although I know others like it.
If you want a hack and slash instead then can’t go wrong with Devil May Cry 5.
EDIT: Slipped my mind while making this comment, Jedi Fallen Order is the closest option you have OP. It’s the same structure as Tomb Raider or God of War, but retains a melee combat approach and even has a small partner that goes with you.

ID: hgefifoDefinitely not the first game that comes to mind I agree, but in terms of a direct comparison of what these games do they are certainly similar, your reply also reminded me that Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order exists and might work even better in this context than Tomb Raider

Bayonetta, Ninja Gaiden Master Collection & Devil May Cry 5 are hack 'n slash titles similar to God of War. They're very exhilarating as well. I'd highly recommend you try them out!

ID: hge66gxTo elaborate the three games I recommended to OP are similar in the sense that they're hack 'n slash titles (since they were lookin' for games that scratch that same itch).
Other than that the way they play are closer to the God of War games prior to the PS4 title (GoW 1, 2, 3, etc.)

ID: hge54bhIf you only have a PS4 then I'd say got for it. Otherwise get "Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition" if you have a PS5.
Also if you get the + Vergil release just know that you won't be able to upgrade to the PS5 version since Capcom didn't provide a upgrade from this title for some odd reason.

While you might enjoy similar games, maybe you just like GoW because it is Game of the year material. I basically check all 9-10/10 games regardless of genre and very often have a good time.

Fenyx immortals rising. Has a ton of puzzles. Hack and slash. Also looks great on ps5.

Hellblade. It’s still set in the Norse mythology but way more darker than gow. It’s on sale right now too. If you get it play with headphones if you can.

I loved GoW. Still my favourite game. With that said... Demon's Souls Remake. No puzzles but lots of traps, fun gameplay and a world that's really immersive.

I'm just playing through A Plague's Tale and I'm really enjoying it.
Not as violent for sure, but great story, up skilling itinerary etc.
Best ps5 ps+ game for a while IMO

Story wise, naughty dog games, and maybe he’ll blade. It’s still an action game so bayonetta, dmc etc

I'd say Kena. Doesn't have the same darker vibe but it has similar interconnected worlds and neat puzzles to solve that remind me a lot of God of War. And the combat is pretty similar too. Hell using your bow and arrow reminds me of the way Atreus shoots his arrows in GOW too.

There's a lot of influence from GoW in AC Valhalla. Combat feels similar but enemies are less bullet-spongy. Reduced number of weapons, upgrading them, putting runes in them, unlocking abilities through exploration and quests, interesting puzzles.
Highly recommend it
