Are you still in doubt between the Digital Version or Disk Version of the PS5? Check Sony’s pricing strategies and make a smart choice

1 : Anonymous2021/09/04 17:44 ID: phw3ah

I would like to share my experience and hopefully help people that are still in doubt which version they should get, as I was when I bought my PS5 6 months ago.

I'm so glad that I got a Disk Version PS5 instead of the Digital Version now that I'm seeing Sony still pushing forward its ridiculous and not consumer-friendly games prices.

Being able to find new games in second-hand shops & at discounts in retail stores for a much more reasonable price (up to half the price) and not being stuck into Sony's Playstation Store overpriced digital games is what's saving this generation for me.

I was already able to save way more than the digital version price difference (+100€) in disc games when comparing its price with their digital version available at the Playstation Store.

If I didn't have a good PC to play Xbox exclusives, I could totally see myself only getting a Series X + Gamepass as my main console if I knew Sony would still push this ridiculous pricing strategy forward.

So if anyone is still in doubt about digital or disk PS5, or even between a Series X, I would really recommend looking at Sony's (and Microsoft's) pricing strategies and seeing what's the best next-gen console for you.

Saving 100€ in the start and being stuck to a single store might not be the best option for you after all, especially after the recent news.

I mean honestly, this is another in a long line of “I’d rather have the option and not need it than need it and not have it”.

3 : Anonymous2021/09/04 20:41 ID: hblzda7

I like the option to buy discs and the flexibility of digital downloads. I tend to get the discs for the exclusives or games that would potentially increase in value over time, vs. digital when I’d like to take advantage of a sale and download on the spot. Right now I have a 1T EXT SSD full of PS4 games and the internal PS5 drive is about half full, and I own an additional 6 discs. - desperately need SONY to release the updated firmware so that I can add the new SSD card; kinda running out of space over here.

Disc all day

ID: hbnhvmt

For sure. I was able to get Cyberpunk for $10 new, and Godfall for $25 used. Granted both aren’t great games, but I got my money worth out of them and enjoyed what I played. Most likely would have never given either a chance for a very long time, if even at all.

It helps that my dad games and he only buys physical, so I can always just borrow a game without having to game share with him since I’ve been doing that with the same pal since early PS4

ID: hbnidxk

And when cyberpunk gets fixed and the PS5 version is out you'll upgrade for free or cheap

ID: hbnz2ye

My local library lends games. I have played so much ps5 content for free

5 : Anonymous2021/09/04 20:30 ID: hblxuu9

Glad I went physical because they introduced taxes on digital services in Ontario this summer. It's now the same price as buying from a store, with a longer wait for sales typically.

When RE8 released this year, I waited literally a week after launch and got the game $40 cheaper from a marketplace seller. Can't do that with digital only games!

ID: hbm46o3

Walmart near me always has games for $50 instead of $60

ID: hbmk7w0

Game fly has rift apart for a 44

6 : Anonymous2021/09/04 22:14 ID: hbmb96e

some games are $140 NZD on the ps store which converts to $100 USD. Ridiculous.

7 : Anonymous2021/09/04 22:43 ID: hbmewjw

when you buy 2-3 games a year like me it doesn't matter. digital is fine.

ID: hbp5ztz

Here here. Also everyone is acting like the online store never has sales. Patient gamers love the all dig version!

ID: hbo9p1p

thanks I needed the validation. I don’t feel duped at all. even with a ps4 I bought most games on the store

ID: hbon0p8

I'm happy with digital because I can don't buy that many games, and started to despise putting in disks and removing them and storing them with the PS4 that I was buying digital only with that anyway toward the end. I'm not going into the effort to resell and appreciate convenience of having everything digital.

8 : Anonymous2021/09/04 20:55 ID: hbm15xk

I just buy shit digital on sale. I have to wait a little while longer, I'm not at a dearth of shit to play enough that I need instant gratification.

ID: hbnraqz

This, and I only buy games on sale I know I'll want to replay. If you'd rather buy the latest releases and sell them right after playing, then disc version makes more sense, but digital is way more convenient if you don't.

9 : Anonymous2021/09/04 20:22 ID: hblwuil

You can get physical copy of rift apart brand new under £50 right now in the uk, digital is around £60. I will stay physical until the end, not gonna let sony have me by the balls.

And not only is physical cheaper I can sell it as well.

ID: hbmusnn

exactly my reasons for physical media.

ID: hbm43h7

I made money from both Demon's Souls and Ratchet & Clank, pre-ordered both played both, completed and sold on.

Digital only consoles are such a dumb purchase imo, don't get me wrong, I buy digital (mainly for indie titles), but I get the majority of Sony games day 1, play through, keep if they're something super special, but sell probably 95% of them on for a very small loss and some for a profit.

10 : Anonymous2021/09/04 23:07 ID: hbmhrsv

So far, I have gotten:

Spider Man MM Ultimate: $40

GoT: $40 - after beating it, I traded in to Gamestop for $22 credit towards Mass Effect Legendary.

R&C Rift Apart: $40

Doom Eternal: $20

Everything was brand new in wrapping.

Disc was absolutely the way to go.

11 : Anonymous2021/09/04 23:45 ID: hbmm4in

I originally had the Digital Edition. Sold it a few months later and purchased the Disk. I'm quite regretful of not purchasing the Disk from the get-go and purchasing my games physically. The price differences in games and the ability to sell games after you are done with them cannot be understated. Not to mention the satisfaction that comes with receiving a tangible physical good for your money. Even if you don't have the extra $100 to spare, I would wait until you do before purchasing a console because the disk is that much more worthwhile

12 : Anonymous2021/09/04 20:44 ID: hblzsa3

I'm 100% OK with my DE. If anything, it has helped me let go of my FOMO and enjoy more the games I have in my huge backlog. I don't need to be there day one. When the games come down in price enough, I'll get them, which is what I would do if I was buying discs.

And, if I really wanted to get a new game, I could always play the "using accounts from other countries to get cheaper prices" game. If you're smart, you can get a $60 for €35 (~$42) if you shop around for PSN cards.

ID: hbo5834

I always buy PSN cards at 20-25% discount and wait for psn store sales. These 30% price drops happen soon enough.

No need to buy discs.

13 : Anonymous2021/09/04 21:21 ID: hbm4n95

After my PS3 died in 2014, I had a long break from gaming. Picked up a PS4 Pro only last year because of the lockdown. Then got lucky enough to get my PS5 in February. For some reason, the stand-alone digital version never appealed to me and I’m so glad I didn’t fall for that.

For movies, music, and TV, I’m more than happy to go fully digital through subscriptions but, I found gaming on physical always much cheaper. You can pick up brand new games 15-20% cheaper compared to digital. I had 15% off (UK eBay based retailers) on preorders for FF VII Remake Intergrade, Jedi: FO, LiS: True Colours; Death stranding Directors Cut; even a 20% off on Ghost of Tsushima Directors Cut. And the best part is, once I feel that I no longer want to play something, I can sell the disc to recoup some of the cost.

14 : Anonymous2021/09/04 23:06 ID: hbmhnz7

I have always advocated for physical. Not only because its typically cheaper but i love seeing my collection grow. But sadly majority of game sales are still digital. Nothing is gonna change that:/ its like yelling peope to stop buying mtx , never gonna happen

15 : Anonymous2021/09/05 13:07 ID: hbol8gw

I mean there was never any reason to go digital.

The ps5 itself still has access to the store the literal only benefit is saving a measly $100.

Within a few months of ps5 coming out we also saw instances of major sales for physical games that didn't translate to the psn store when immortals Fenix rising was like $30 a few weeks after it came out but didn't go to that price digitally for a few months after

16 : Anonymous2021/09/05 16:35 ID: hbpbxkd

You should see Nintendos pricing

17 : Anonymous2021/09/04 21:21 ID: hbm4k7d

Buying cheaper second hand and selling afterwards have saved me 270 euro already compared to the money I would have spent in the digital store. I am so glad I got a disk version!

18 : Anonymous2021/09/04 20:30 ID: hblxulq

I always buy physical. Only digital if the sale is good enough. I don’t want there to only be one option to buy my games in the future.

19 : Anonymous2021/09/04 20:34 ID: hblyfuj

I bought the PS5 Digital Edition through PlayStation Direct in July and I couldn’t be happier about the choice I made. I already transitioned to all digital on my PS4 and the Digital Edition is the sexier one of the twins in terms of its design lol! Plus, the PlayStation Store has a sale every week, and a lot of them are very aggressively discounted for consumers (Up To 50% off, 60% off, 70% off, and Games Under $15 all during this week alone).

ID: hbo3ogn

It's undeniably the most attractive of the two models. I was surprised at just how better it looked in person, not to mention just how silent it is compared to the disc version and of course, its price.

20 : Anonymous2021/09/04 21:54 ID: hbm8s39

Disc all day, I’m buying sealed new games off OLX with 60€ (just got GoT Directors Cut), when on Playstation Store the new games are 80€. Ratchet & Clank is 25€ right now because of the bundles that flooded the people with this game trying to get rid of it. Also after I finish the game I sell it again with 5-10€ less so it’s much more convenient than buying digital games that you re stuck with forever.

21 : Anonymous2021/09/05 05:12 ID: hbnlavj

i had loads of ps4 discs, and wanted to play them on the 5, choice was made for me, i waited and got my 5 disc version

22 : Anonymous2021/09/05 05:12 ID: hbnlb9x

As a 90s kid I will be super sad when gaming is purely digital. I much prefer physical versions and because of store monopoly, physical games brand new on release are now cheaper than on the stores. 20 aud cheaper to buy it physically.

23 : Anonymous2021/09/05 06:19 ID: hbnqs3z

70 dollar games and paid upgrades..

Me with a gamefly subscription and a ps5 disc drive edition

24 : Anonymous2021/09/05 07:59 ID: hbny1o1

I got digital because I have over 60 games digital and 2 disc. I just wait for deals if I'm buying a game. It sucks not being able to borrow games or get them for cheaper tho

25 : Anonymous2021/09/04 22:39 ID: hbmefb6

I hear you, I see you, and I agree. But Im enjoying my digital life with playstation. It would be hard to go back to physical

26 : Anonymous2021/09/04 20:18 ID: hblw84v

Digital all the way for me. There’s plenty of sales.

ID: hbn88pd

Right there with you. Been digital since PS4. Convenience

ID: hblwlv1

Yes, but this guy has a point you can find most games physically cheaper on retail sites than you would with the ps store sales.

27 : Anonymous2021/09/04 20:17 ID: hblw6v1

Everyone has been making this argument since day one. My question is what type of second hands stores are you going to where you can get newer games for almost half off? I’d assume most PS5 games only sell for $10-$15 if they are used

ID: hbm002l

Any Ubisoft game usually drops to around 30 within 6 months, the others are up to availability and price drops. Got Rift apart recently for second hand from a private seller at €25 because it was often bundled, but I still cant find Sackboy below €45. Patience is all it takes.

ID: hbm07ba

I always get my games from ebay, play them and then sell them on ebay, I only loose like 10-20% of the actual game price

ID: hbm8cog

Here in Spain i can't get Rift apart or returnal in second handed apps (very popular market around here) for just 30-35 euros

Right now rift apart in the other hand is on sale on the store for 69 euros xd

ID: hbmefnj

Look up deals on OfferUp/Craigslist in your local area, there's plenty of people selling for half-off, and you can talk them down even further if you're lucky.

ID: hbmitdo

I see a lot of used games on Kijiji in Canada, soon after launch of new game you can always find someone selling a game they've already beaten for under retail price. So far I never bothered to buy one, but if I was really short on cash I'd do it. Also you can find people selling new controllers for like 60% of the price. I assume this happens if someone got a PS5 bundle with an extra controller he doesn't need.

28 : Anonymous2021/09/05 00:13 ID: hbmpfw3

100% physical and I'll stay that way. I've already saved 40% of my $100 more that I paid on buying physical games as I got Immortals Fenyx Rising for $20 physical last year. With physical, you get the best of both worlds as you can still get the digital deals but you can also get B2G1 sales, buy used, sell games when you don't need them anymore, rent them from Libraries, do GameFly and rent them that way and borrow them from friends. Plus, I don't have the greatest internet so it's nice not to have to download massive game files every time I get a new game.

29 : Anonymous2021/09/05 08:35 ID: hbo0hcx

Thought about it a long time but in the end i went with the Digital one and i cant be happier. Best purchase ive done in a long time regarding entertainment stuff.

First: it looks better on my shelf. ((I hate the look of the disk version))

Second: I dont care about prizes that much either way because i plan my purchases before hand so when a game i know is about to arrive i have already made sure i have the money saved to by it day 1 for what ever prize they ask.

Third: The last trade in place in my town where i live ( gamestop ) cloosed last year so i wont be able to trade in games that way.

Last: After the problem with my X360 I had back in the days and my PS3 (I skipped the 4th gen but heard some of them had problems also) I will never go back to Disk drive. My 360 scratched my disks making me sending in my whole console 2 different times, Same with my ps3 and I heard some ps4,s had the same problem so no, I wont ever by a disk drive again. Less chance for a problem to happen.

30 : Anonymous2021/09/05 12:05 ID: hbofbbp

All you people do is wake up and think about something else to cry about

31 : Anonymous2021/09/04 20:22 ID: hblwtls

Digital gamesharing, thats already a half price game if you play it with someone else. Playing the exact minute games release, waiting for sales and buying cheaper wallet top ups at places like shopto.

I would like to have discs to resell but when i had my ps4 i had bought games and sold them again a few times with a few different games. Basically buying the same game 2 or 3 times because i got a craving to play it at some point.
