- An update regarding Horizon Forbidden West on PS4 and PS5
-
So buying the digital PS4 version and getting the upgrade will save me £10 right?
ID: hbmk5ntID: hbofwo5but the more expensive ps5 version is still available on psn, what is the point of that version then?
ID: hbmlj6yIn this situation, yes.
ID: hbmsnngSo we’re paying $10 extra for the white case??
Is it bad that I’m still thinking of getting the white case??
ID: hbmrn1uWait, i don’t get it.
If you buy PS4 version, cheaper than PS5. You get a free PS5 upgrade?
Does it not count for physical copy as well?
ID: hbms1j6Yea you can get HFW PS4 for a cheaper price and get the free upgrade
And it counts for both physical and digital copies of the game
ID: hbmwngzThis goes to show how fucking arbitrary is the price bump on the "next gen" prices.
ID: hbnuokfMy favorite part of the increase was when the take two CEO said that they deliver more value than $70. I would tend to agree. I bought a basketball game that ended up being a gambling simulator about basketball. Incredible!

The change:
Free Horizon Forbidden West PS4 to PS5 Upgrade
Future first party PS4 & PS5 games will have a $10 upgrade fee
ID: hbmkl7cDoes this mean I can buy the PS4 version for 10 dollars cheaper and upgrade to PS5 version for free? I only have a PS5
ID: hbmmcoxYes that’s correct. I’ll be buying the PS4 Special Edition now for the steelbook and free PS5 upgrade
ID: hbn1jlayes although given this change, which is likely a very recent change, I imagine the ps5 version will see a price deduction to be in line with the the ps4 version
ID: hbmhv57The post also seems to imply that there are more first-party cross-gen games to come (that we don't know about yet) ...
ID: hbmi245MLB probably has another year or two of cross-gen before it moves to being current-gen only. Factions and the TLoU remake are probably cross-gen as well.
ID: hbmirs0Yes, there's definitely going to be more cross-gen games. I recall reading an article from last year or earlier that Sony plans to support PS4 to at least 2023.
-
Does this mean the ps5 version is also 60 dollars? Its a weird position they put themselves in. If so does that mean the 80 dollar edition will be reduced to 70?
ID: hbnxm66I don't think so, but they might as well just make the PS5 version $60 because most people are just going to get the PS4 version for $10 less and upgrade to the PS5 version for free.
ID: hbo2rkuPeople that know will. There are a lot of people that will just buy they one they think they need. Especially if it is a gift parents will just buy the best version.
ID: hbo7y65You underestimate how unimportant 10$ are to people. A lot of them will gladly pay the 10$ instead of going through an additional step of "upgrading"
-
Finally. They listen. Also they layed out plans for God of War and GT7. Finally consistency.
ID: hbmnaj7Yep. So basically both are cross-gen.
Edit: updated wording to cross-gen.
ID: hbms41xwhich is old news, of course

So even though on PS5, buy PS4 version for $10 cheap, right? Or is it $60 across the board now?
ID: hbmif2iThis is a really good point. Why would anyone buy the $70 PS5 version when you can get the PS4 version for $60 and upgrade for free?
ID: hbmlo80This is exactly why Sony is clarifying that future cross gen games will be a $10 upgrade. They are just taking the bullet for Horizon since they already promised it would be a free upgrade.
ID: hbmk7oyMy understanding is as follows...
Horizon will eventually change things around. Likely all standard edition preorders will be refunded and it's just made into one version and we will possibly see a reduction in Digital DX edition as a "make good" or something so it isn't $20 for essentially nothing. Future games will be more straightforward. There will be a PlayStation 4 version, a PlayStation 5 version for $10 more that includes both and an upgrade download that is $10 on its own. -
I’m an all digital guy so this didn’t really affect me to begin with, but, from what I can tell this still doesn’t give players who buy the top tier editions physical copies right?
ID: hbmq7akSeems that way, it makes zero sense to buy the ps5 version of the game. Save 10 bucks by buying the ps4 version, physical or digital, and then use the free ps5 upgrade.
ID: hbmqhpeTrue, they’re probably gonna have to readjust their pricing on the store, maybe make the digital deluxe $70 instead of $80 or something.
Still, giving collectors steel books and no physical copy is silly. Hopefully all the other stuff they get balances out for them.

We belive in generations
-
Wow, they actually listened
-
So are they going to update the MSRP of the PS5 version, or do you need to pay $10 for the luxury of having a PS5 box instead of a PS4 box?
-
It seems like Sony has been super quick to listen to criticism this generation. Between this, the PS3 store shutting down, and the lack of warning with pre-orders, it feels like they're listening to public outcry much more. But at the same time, it feels like there were less situations that led to outcry before this gen, so I'm not sure if it's actually an improvement
ID: hbmilacAnd this is why bitching and moaning should be encouraged with these situations, it actually works more than "voting with your wallet". Thankfully there wasn't too many people defending this.
ID: hbmjhrxI just don't see how anyone with a brain could've defended a shitty decision like that. They're as stupid as the ones who thought it was a good idea to make us pay full price for the next gen version of the game if we previously bought the last gen version without the Digital Deluxe add on.
$10 upgrade for future cross-gen games is more reasonable because if it was a free upgrade, what would be the point of getting the PS5 version of the games when you could just get the PS4 version for the free upgrade?
ID: hbmxetkBut the issue isnt fixed going forward. The battle for Horizon was won, but the war is lost.
It was easy enough to fix in response of outrage about a supposed lie and not change anything significant for future games.
-
So like, they gonna reduce the PS5 version’s price? Cause it’s gonna be 10$ more for, literally nothing.
ID: hbnfvp4I believe this happened to launch games as well didnt it? I remember that sackboy wws cheaper on ps4 than ps5 and offered a free upgrade.
So yeah, it makes no sense to buythe ps5 unless you like white boxes?
ID: hbnj3mtEven then, the boxes aren’t even white, its just the band saying “ps5”. Honestly it’s the difference between a white tab or a blue tab. Honestly would’ve preferred a black box or white
ID: hbnqfg6Spider-Man Miles Morales was 50 bucks on PS5 same as PS4 on launch day
-
If I'm reading this right, you can actually buy the PS4 version and just play it on PS5 with all the bells and whistles?
It's only the games going forward that'll require the "PS5 tax"?
Strange they decided to do this for Horizon only, when GoT had a paid upgrade. Probably trying to regain back trust because they promised a free upgrade for this.
How hard would it have been to think this through for 5 seconds before releasing the info to the public? They could have avoided a lot of shit PR they seem to like so much lately.
Thanks to the people who dug up that statement from Ryan.
-
So what prevent me to buy the $60 PS4 version and get the free PS5 version instead of buying the $70 PS5 version?
ID: hbmy55cNothing prevents you from doing that.
ID: hbn8ni1You don’t get the white boxart if you buy physical.
-
This is definitely a step in the right direction. Sure, the $10 upgrade is going to be controversial in the future and there will be much to debate about it. But, it's good that Sony is outlining their future plans to the public, instead of remaining silent.
ID: hbml8eqIt’s definitely more ideal than having to fork over another $80 just to transfer save files to the PS5 version.
ID: hbo24mjI think the difference is that the $10 upgrade can be understood logically. If a PS5 game is $70 and the PS4 version is $60, it makes intuitive sense that upgrading from the version that is $10 cheaper would cost $10. It all evens out in the end. The unnecessary upcharge and needless version restrictions originally announced for Horizon did not make logical sense and were consumer unfriendly, that was the difference.
Now, whether PS5 games should be $70 in the first place is another discussion. It definitely seems like some publishers were anticipating an industry wide move to $70 for the new generation, and because that hasn't happened across the board it makes those that did jump to $70 stand out, and not in a good way.

We shouldn’t have to riot in order for this stuff to happen, but glad it did.
-
As a PS5 owner, is there any reason not to just buy the PS4 version? It looks like I’ll get dual entitlement and save $10.
