Holy shit, we're approaching a gig in CPU cache.

ID: hd302ng

Time to load an OS and DOOM only in the cache!

Start this off with the bootloader;

Tetris OS

And a video if you're curious

Year 3000: You need at least a TB of cache

ID: hd4ve8q

Which means the von Neumann bottleneck will more or less be a thing of the past so long as code is written to be cache friendly.

ID: hd4vguc

I remember my 486DX4-100.

8MB of RAM, 420MB HDD. Crazy.

Can I install Linux in that L3 cache? It's way big.

ID: hd2nqsa

You surely can "fit" linux in that cache but can't "install" seeing as caches are volatile.

PS. I am pretty bad at understanding jokes, not sure whether you were joking or seriously asking (gut feeling says joking).

So instead of running it in RAM can I somehow move linux to the cache?

ID: hd3ljsy

At least it would be an interesting challenge to see if you could actually do something like this, just with using cache.

Edit: Or a Cache Disk in general, like a RAM disk.

ID: hd32phv

It's still 96MB (as if it wasn't impressive by itself) per CCX.

ID: hd3da2v

Each CCX could pull in data. And then if you are fine with only using one CCX for calculations, it could use its own L3 as actual cache but use all the others CCX L3+L2+L1 as read only memory.

How much fps in Crysis?

ID: hd291tz

Yes

ID: hd2a6sf

Consider 3990X running crysis at 15fps . I guess... 20 ?

ID: hd2qf02

I look forward to the day we can run Crysis at 60fps without a GPU!

ID: hd4eat8

It can probably fit it in the cache. System requirements quote 1gb recommended RAM.

ID: hd2rygr

*many

So by theory, you could run Windows XP with plenty of resources to "browse the web" (like with a old version of Fire Fox or some kind), or maybe, maybe, run Windows Vista, just in cache. Or plenty of Linux Distros.

wack

6 : Anonymous2021/09/16 17:21 ID: hd3p80e

man that cache! We can literally put a linux there. Damn.

7 : Anonymous2021/09/16 17:47 ID: hd3t3kq

We should be able to boot and run our systems without RAM when the CPU has that much cache available.

8 : Anonymous2021/09/16 20:34 ID: hd4hmt8

We're getting to the point where we're gonna be asking whether Doom can run on L3 cache

9 : Anonymous2021/09/16 21:13 ID: hd4na9p

Hoping I can get one of these for my gaming rig.

10 : Anonymous2021/09/16 17:43 ID: hd3sicn

just 80W is unacceptable to me. 280W? lol amd

ID: hd3tesq

It's a server CPU

ID: hd3tml7

milanesa ponele de nombre

ID: hd42ygk

It's a 64 core.

Have you been living under a rock? Gaming CPUs with V-Cache were announced first by AMD, it's the server CPUs that are being leaked for the first time now.
