- HBO Max Releases Much Anticipated Updated App on PS5
-
Serious question. How many people use these apps on their consoles rather than the TV app or something like a 4k Firestick/Nvidia Shield?
( I guess outside of the users that have their console in the bedroom which I can understand not having those)
ID: hem45s1ID: hem77jfyup. apps generally function better on my ps5 than on my television.
ID: hem78gwSame
ID: hem4f7kAll good man.
I didn't mean it as a "Plebs using consoles to stream media!" and was just curious to how many people do at this point with how saturated media devices are now-a-days.
ID: hem7l89It's pretty convenient to use actually, if I'm playing for a few hours and then I feel like watching something I can just switch to it, rather than turning off the ps5 and then using the TV streaming apps.
ID: hemfe86The PS apps are lagging way behind. Disney and Hulu still don’t have 4K/HDR. Haven’t checked the HBO update but that was also 1080P/SDR only.
If you have a 4K TV there’s a very good chance the native apps there will be far superior.
ID: hem84phI do like 95% of my media stuff on PS5 because I use it mostly at night and my cool headphones are hooked up to the PS5.
ID: hem4e6nOn my lg tv there is no app for hbo max or crunchyroll so i use my ps5 for those but everything else i use on the tv
ID: hem5ykgThey added an HBO Max app for LG tvs recently (at least on my CX)
ID: hem7k7iLg tv’s have HBO max, now. I have it on mine. They added it a couple months ago.
ID: hem8xbdDefinitely use it with my PS5. Mainly so I can use my headphones….and the media remote
ID: hem98n4I use chromecast tv. It offers more flexabilty and more apps.
ID: hem9i0xI use the PS5 because apps like Netflix will play 4K content without HDR; the native Samsung TV apps force HDR even though the TV produces a garbage picture with it enabled. I can also use my wireless headset so I don't disturb my wife & baby.
Mainly those two things for any streaming service, but this new HBO app is also seriously snappy. It's been out for a week or so and I now absolutely prefer to watch HBO on PS5 just to use the updated app over the old one.
ID: hem9eqqI hate the interface on my smart TV and don't like fucking with inputs so I have the thing set to wake on console start and default straight to that input and basically never change it. I wouldn't mind going the firestick/shield route at some point but for now it's so much more convenient to just fire up the PS5 and run everything from there. I like that for most of the streaming apps I can just sleep the system and pick it right back up without too much trouble on wake.
HBO is basically the only streaming service that seems to run like ass on PS4/PS5, so I'm hoping this update fixes some of that.

Need HBO max in UK
ID: hem6qrbYou are looking at 2023. Sky still has the contract I'm afraid.
ID: hem161oHeard there's an existing licensing deal with Sky that's preventing it.
-
now I can pause The Wire without fear of the entire app blowing up
-
Can I finally see my entire list now? They only show all of it on desktop versions.
-
They removed the option from PS and my Roku. It’s a pain in the ass.
-
No Atmos on apps on PS5 yet? Then I'll keep using them on smart tv.
-
Now if we could only get a Paramount Plus app so I don’t have to switch to the PS4 for Star Trek.
-
Great, now bring HBO Max to Australia pls. I get we have some stuff on Binge, but I want the exclusives
-
The PS5 app is by far the best version of HBO Max. The loading times are finally bearable.
-
Until they actually let movies play back at 4K on PS5 I will never use it on that platform. Any time I try to watch an HBO Max movie on my PS5 it's a blurry, over-compressed mess.
-
Every syllable you typed is absolutely false. As I wrote in another reply earlier...
I just got HBO Max on my PS5 last weekend (it's free with my cable TV sub). One of the first thing I watched was Ford vs. Ferrari in 4K before they took it down, so yes, 4K stuff is up and running for certain items.
4K HDR movies for some content is working perfectly fine on HBO Max.
-
Cool. Doesn’t change the fact that most things I’ve tried to watch were sub-1080p and super compressed. Those syllables are true, btw.
-
What isp so you have
-
Not to derail - but I just recently switched to ATV4k after streaming on my PS5 and there is a huge difference. Not to mention power consumption reduction but the image quality is just better overall.
Using ethernet on both.
-
Still can’t take advantage of Dolby Vision or Atmos.
-
Really blows my mind ps5 doesn’t support this.
-
Agreed
-
Wonder if this update applies to Xbox as well. I know the app has been pretty bad on PS but I’ve been always using it on my Xbox because it runs way better for whatever reason
-
Not to be that guy, but the whole media streaming platform is ass to me without Dolby Vision. Great for games though
-
Agree. Missing DV/Atmos was a huge oversight . Especially given that Sony wants this to be a Streamer box replacement as well; given that there's a remote.
For many people lacking DV is a deal breaker as every modern TV (except Samsung) supports it. And all modern soundbars also support Atmos
-
I hope they release the proper hbo max app in spain for tje ps5 since we don't have one
-
Hopefully hbo max will come to Canada cause right now iirc it’s a part of crave and it’s not all on that
-
if someone can successfully instruct me on the ability to run HBO Max in Canada, with the PS5, I will PM you a gift card. I ask because even as owner of Nvidia Shield, I cannot even search for the app from Googleplay store.
HBO max is highly desired for little ol me in Canada. I'll even buy a 2nd PS5 to make Sony happy.
-
My fiancé will he much happier now lol.
-
Thank god, maybe it will stop giving me the “oops, an error occurred” notification every 20 minutes
-
Still waiting for Paramount Plus/CBS all access
-
Yoooo! I don't have HBO but I'm still happy lol. Every little improvement Sony makes to the PS5 is exciting.
-
Nice
-
Should my app have updated?
-
Can you download the app outside of the us?
-
Wasn't aware the app had issues on Roku. I use it all the time on my Roku Express and never run into issues. Unfortunately my Roku model doesn't do 4K, so I was hoping this update would finally add that to the PS5 app, but not seeing any indication of that. Unfortunate.
-
Tbh Hbo Max just has a bad user interface, they just need to redesign it all
-
Is there an official PS5 app or is it still only PS4?
-
Still only PS4
-
Anyone else having issues with subtitles being minuscule in HBO Max?
-
Now I can’t seem to log in
-
Wish they had att tv or direct stream
-
Question. How are you guys dealing with the HDR switching issue (automatic hdr content detection)? Because the ps5 setting for that is only applicable to games and not for the streaming apps. It's either i have to keep on turning ON and OFF the hdr by going to the settings everytime i want to watch a different content. Cause we all know watching non hdr content while hdr is on is just not good at all.
-
And let me guess, no Dolby Vision support.
-
Ps5 needs to add Dolby vision support. So cheap of Sony not to include it.
-
Dolby Vision is a licensed product…..so it would be pretty expensive for Sony to add Dolby Vision support for each manufactured console
-
Microsoft did it for their Xbox. A 50 usd Google TV dongle has it. Honestly I think it's cheap for a 500 usd console to not have it.
-
Oddly. Runs amazing on Apple TV so I’m curious how this will work.
-
Wow! When can I buy a ps5? Can't wait to see it
-
Will this be in Europe now ?
-
HBO is never in Europe
-
Thank god. It would crash consistently after like 15-20 of watching anything. Have to reload a movie multiple times
-
The app runs like ass no matter where it is. Worst designed steaming app ever
