TSMC and Sony considering joint chip factory, Japan gov't to help

This would be great for Sony, I wonder who manufactures their camera sensors now?
Sony pretty much owns the market share for camera sensors, teaming up with TSMC would help them even more.

Sony Semiconductor owns 7 of their own fabs, and actually opened up a new expansion (fab5) in April. They've got a capacity of 138,000 wafers a month
This TSMC fab will be built on Sony's land next to one of Sony's existing fabs.

Sony is possibly the first japanese semicondutor seller via their transistor products in the 50's and their old corporate specialty is Miniaturization, so yeah.

ID: hfyc61zThis is a Japanese government led operation. They want Japan to start producing their own higher density chips and has offered many billions to TSMC and Sony to build Japan's first 20nm chip plant. This plant is unlikely to be producing PS5 chips (that's 7nm). This will be more for cars, industrial machinery and home appliances. Items that don't require the most cutting edge (and most expensive) process nodes.
By comparison, the best Japan could do before was 40nm, so this is quite the upgrade for the country even if 20nm is quite old.
EDIT: And it's not just Japan. The U.S. is also pushing for semiconductor companies to open new plants locally, rather than expanding in Asia. Shortages have everyone spooked.

Sorry reddit but this is totally unrelated to PS5. The fab would produce 28 and 16nm chips, which isn't what the PS5 is short of, this is for Auto and imaging application, where Sony has a leading BU (different from the gaming one). Also this is fairly old news, it has been covered since at least June.

Curious if these factories add anything to the job market. It just seems like almost everything would be automated with something like this but idk.

Sure it's not "fully" automated especially since machines require some form of maintenance or supervision but I guess I'm curious if its a significant number of jobs to make a dent in unemployment rate in Japan or something. Maybe the Jap government is just helping to increase their trade market since these chips are in demand.
ID: hfxtrdhEven if a manufacturing plant is largely automated, it still demands a huge amount of economic activity. From transportation to local ingredients.. Supply chains are a massive job creator. You also need people to design and make all the machines, operate and maintain them.

ID: hfxoezqIt’s not about robots doing the work. You’d still need people to determine what work needs to be done. Chip manufacturing involves use of hazardous chemicals. Soo unless you have an AI of some kind, robots can’t sustain this by themselves.
Btw, the manufacturing process is largely automated as it is. People are needed for the maintenance and proper functioning of the equipment, not to mention design the process itself

Sony playing the long game. Imagine being able to get chips for PS5/PS6 from TSMC from your own freaking chip making factory.

Sony vision S about to become a reality, sony is also manufacturing the iphone cameras, it will also help to manufacture more camera sensor and more ps5 in japan , a lot of division of sony will be happy about that.

It will be a good start if this were to go through. They needed the experience and who knows they might be able to make their own chips for PS6 onwards

It's still TSMC, it's just that Sony and Japan may be helping fund the building of a semiconductor manufacturing center as they cost many billions of dollars. And TSMC is currently building one in the US. It's just a good idea in general to have more places where semiconductors are made as there are shortages on just about everything related to them right now.

I'd be happy for this just because after covid I think it's pretty clear that putting everything tech in the same spot is bad.
Tsmc is also always busy. They make so much stuff it's insane.

It’s TSMC now too but if they fund a fab on their home turf, they will get dibs on capacity and closer integration to their supply chain.
