I’m a game developer, what AMD card should I test my game on?

1 : Anonymous2021/10/16 03:44 ID: q94704

So I've been working on a game from the engine up and I want to make sure my game works well on AMD hardware. Is there any specific AMD card that's super common or would be especially representative of AMD hardware in general?

Thank you!

I think steam has data on what hardware it's users use I would start there

Good point, looks like the Radeon RX 580 is the most popular.

Looking at just then most popular may be misleading. When do you plan to have said game released? If it's not in the next few months, the most popular selection may change.

Also keep in mind when the rx 500 series came out, AMD only had low and mid tier options, and only 5 at that. 570 and 580 were the clear best budget gaming cards AMD had and sold like hot cakes.

Current RDNA 2 series has 9 cards spanning low to high end gaming, and supply limited (aka still high in demand) so won't have the presence in the survey but a lot of people want to get them when possible.

Also the RX 580 is super stable at this point, whereas RDNA stuff might have slight driver shenanigans still you want to catch.

Personally I would suggest at least a newer RDNA / 5000 series card.

wow I hate bitcoin, why is a 4 year old gpu worth more now than when it came out T.T

Polaris (400/500) series and RDNA 2 are the most important. Then there's also RDNA 1, and 300/200/HD 7000 series cards after that. And Vega architecture as it's used in a lot of IGPUs.

I would actually suggest a newer RDNA card if you can as it supports the full old ISA as well as the new stuff. GCN 4.0 or newer is all good, though, so the RX480/580 or even 470/570 would be just fine, but newer would be good.

Ok, great to know! Thanks!!

I think the 580 will report as the most used on hardware surveys. However from what I’ve seen, that card is incredibly more stable than any other Radeon card. Imo I would test one of the 6000 series cards like maybe the 6700 xt.

470, 480, 570, 580 if you can find one for under $200. Even 4GB is fine assuming your game doesn't require more than that.

5500 xt, 6600 if you want something newer and faster, but probably > $400 at this point due to scarcity.

6700 XT / 6600 XT

Yepp those are the cards that most people will go with in the next year's. I would also recommend you test the 5700xt, since still many people have it.

How far are you from release, and are you interested in optimisation or just compatibility testing? What's the minimum expected GPU spec and the recommended spec (on the NVIDIA side, assuming you don't know the AMD target)?

In general, I'd say:

If you're just looking for compatibility testing, do that via an alpha/beta test, closed or open, and let users report any problems. Make sure you have enough AMD testers with a variety of hardware. If several users have the same problem with a specific card, you can get or borrow that card to debug the problem on it.

If you're looking for optimisation, note that different card architectures will not have the exact same optimisations. I think it's safe enough to limit yourself to one Polaris card and one RDNA 2 card, and a Vega based APU if you're interested in addressing that.

RX 580 for most common GPU, Vega 8 for common integrated GPU, maybe 5700 XT for high-end yet still quite common. Imo 6000 series still too scarce considering this situation.

This is a take I can standby.

5700XT last generation, had the most “Problems” & sold well due to cheap price. RX 580 Steam reviews very common.

Vega 8 is just super common for Mobile.

The Rx 580 was peak GCN arch (technically, the Vegas are better but they weren't as popular). Also, any of the other Polaris GPUS would work just as well: 470. 480, 570 and 590.

For something newer, you could try with any of the new RDNA2 Cards like the 6800, as they are the newest tech and support raytracing and SAM out of the box.

Good luck with your game!

Hmmmm...

Vega represented a break in AMD's history of GPU evolution, is what he means. Only three discrete cards were released with GCN5, all targeted at the enthusiast market and employing fairly novel technologies, at the time, being relegated to an iGPU soon after, as RDNA was released.

Honestly, one GCN card is much like the next, so would get the most popular of those (e.g. 580, Vega 56, some APU), and then some RDNA2 card as those are likely set to be pretty popular too, and RDNA3 likely isn't much different architecture-wise, especially on the low-mid range (ie. from next-gen APUs up).

Just my opinion, playability is a big part of game production. If it requires a brand new high-end GPU the number of satisfied gamers will be limited.

I like the idea of some thing like an RX 580. If it plays well on the RX 580 then it should play well on anything newer.

I would also checkout how it plays with discrete graphic. It would cover a lot more potential users.

Take one Polaris card and one Navi card. (i.e. "RX 550 2GB or 4GB" & "RX 580 8GB" and "RX 6600")

Same for nVidia, take one of the 1000 cards and one of the 3000 ones. ("GT 1030 DDR5 2GB or 4GB" / "GTX 1600 Ti 6GB" and RTX 3060)

That way you cover the most important and most used cards.

Yeah that's more or less my goal. I can't afford 4 cards, so I'm planning to make sure I can maintain 60fps at 1080p on a 1060 and a 580. Then hopefully I can get some funding once I have a demo and then be able to afford the higher end cards and test 4k on them.

14 : Anonymous2021/10/16 04:16 ID: hgtoz7k

Rx 580

15 : Anonymous2021/10/16 04:50 ID: hgts2g5

6800xt

16 : Anonymous2021/10/16 06:09 ID: hgtymkk

Ideally, I'd say a high end, a mid tier and whatever the lowest card you can use that meets your system requirements.

17 : Anonymous2021/10/16 07:24 ID: hgu463r

As others said, determining the window for the game release may change which gpu will be the most popular (try to extrapolate on steam trends). It'll likely be a low-midrange gpu that'd the more popular at a point (5600xt, 6600xt, etc)

Also, if at any point you consider going to consoles, an RDNA2 (series 6000) might be a good consideration, as the new consoles use rdna2 🙂

In any case, try to get in touch with amd directly, they might be able to give you some help if you want to optimize (though it likely come with a splash logo to add to your game ;))

18 : Anonymous2021/10/16 10:36 ID: hguh8m6

580, 5600/700xt and if you wanna test a 6xxx serie i'd go for the 6800xt.

19 : Anonymous2021/10/16 13:13 ID: hguuwj3

Probably something along the lines of a 6700xt, this seems closest to what the consoles run?
