I always considered General Leo to be a Paladin, since his Shock ability gets reused by Beatrix in IX.

ID: hhidszn

Given his lack of magic I didn’t consider him much of one, but I can understand that. That said this doesn’t read as an exhaustive list of Paladins in the series, there are ones missing after all.

They make a huge deal about how Leo refused Magitek infusions. He relies solely on his sword skills. He'd be a fighter.

Leo’s definitely a Paladin

I feel like Ashe from XII is a Paladin. Primarily shown with greatswords, and uses Holy magick

ID: hhiss9e

And then in Revenant Wings she’s a Time Mage with hand bombs. That always seemed like such an odd change, I find it kind of funny.

My favorite class! Sadly underrepresented in the franchise, but the ones we got are all great characters.

FF 1 and 3 has Paladins under another moniker.

7 : Anonymous2021/10/21 18:52 ID: hhiw00e

Cecil is one of the best characters for me.

While it might not be the most Iconic of depictions (Yet?) and its technically from a cinematic, I gotta love the way they depicted FFXIV Endwalker's Paladin or rather, the player character stand in as a Paladin. (No spoilers in screen shots)

Endwalker's imagery is really a love letter to IV, with the Paladin being a very obvious homage to Cecil. I'm excited to see what other IV references pop up.

Can’t we put AY Kain on this list? Holy dragoon is just a Paladin that can jump.

XI Galka paladin. We are literal meat shields!!

You missed the best paladin of FFXI, Halver!

Sand'oria theme starts up

Honestly, I would argue against Ceodore being a Paladin and the idea that a Paladin is just a Knight with white magic…. Because that is what Ceodore is. Also, Knights in FFI are the same thing, so I’d just say Knights can sometimes use basic white magic, but that doesn’t make them a Paladin.

Like, it’s a big deal that Cecil is specifically a Paladin in IV’s world, but Ceodore is definitely not that - he can only use white magic to symbolize a joining between his parents.

Also, I wish FFXIV PLDs could wear an outfit resembling the ones from Tactics Advance!

Edit: I would also argue for putting Queen from Type-0 on this list.

13 : Anonymous2021/10/21 17:40 ID: hhil8ek

Just out of curiosity, what makes Beatrix a Paladin? Not trying to argue just never connected those dots.

ID: hhiojq1

During the portion of FFIX where she's playable, she has access to both "Seiken" (similar abilities to Steiner's Sword Arts) and a small amount of White Magic, which traditionally indicated a Paladin in classic FF games.

Additionally, she wields Save The Queen (in which FFIX is its first appearance) which would go on to become an iconic sword for knightly and/or Paladin-type characters.

ID: hhisop1

As said Seiken is the big one, which translates as “Holy Sword”. That and the limited but potent White Magic and using a Knight sword.

you forget about cecil?

He’s literally the first one you see…

……?

Who’s the one in FFT? I don’t remember.

ID: hhisx3j

Agrias. Along with Cecil she’s probably the big influence on the path Paladin takes in the series.

Oh, Frimmy.

17 : Anonymous2021/10/21 21:58 ID: hhjn3hi

Beatrix was always the coolest paladin

Nice look at them!

XIII: Less a specific Paladin and more a Paladin reference, Snow has a weapon called Paladin in XIII and kinda functions like a traditional Paladin would in his Sentinel stance (he redirects, blocks, and can even heal a little, though his better healing is locked behind Medic). Snow also follows a strong moral code, basically following his oath to being a hero and Serah like a Paladin would follow a holy oath, so he's as close to XIII gets to having a Paladin on a character level too.

XIV: Also for the curious (but not worth putting on this list), a couple major characters from XIV can function as a Paladin, but aren't lorewise one. The Crystal Exarch can tank a dungeon as a Paladin, though he doesn't have any lore connection to the job and just summons an aetherial blade and shield. While most NPCs are base classes rather than jobs, Arenvald has a level of protection abilities that exceed the basic Knight ones and push him into Paladin level of strength. If you're curious about either of them and haven't played XIV yet, I heavily recommend you exhibit caution when looking them up though- there are major spoilers about recent content that you might stumble upon.
