I usually trust opinions of people, because sometimes it bares more trust than just reading articles, but sometimes I see people flaming others for not going "full AMD" instead of AMD cpu + Nvidia gpu. It kinda drove me to doubt that I'm using an RTX 3070 ti for gaming now.
-
With GPU supply like it is at the moment? Get the one that's in stock at something close to your price point. Everything else is secondary.
ID: hiftsy0ID: hifu633This is the way

Well if you run Linux, AMD has better open source driver.
ID: hif0grnBetter is a severe understatement.
ID: hif8tjvCould you elaborate a bit on why it matters to average users?

Vram is an issue in certain niches. You can saturate more than 10gb with triple 1440p/5k for example. I had to swap out my 3080 for a 6800xt because of this. This is of course a very niche use case.
AMD GPUs are also much less expensive where I'm from. You can get a 6800xt for €200 less than a 3080 because the 3080 is better at mining.

The flaming is just fanboy bullshit. Things that matter are: price, performance, features, availability. If you don’t care about DLSS and Ray tracing and the AMD card of equivalent performance is a good price, get it.
-
Software suite is way better, raw raster perf vs price is much better and if you're into Wayland support on Linux. Other than that, Nvidia unfortunately simply rolls over AMD.
-
Disregarding pricing, at this point in time, you would choose Radeon over Nvidia if you run Linux and want to be fully open source, if you care about the all inclusive driver utility, if you want the best 1080P and 1440P frame rates and if you want lower power consumption for equal frame rates.
You’d go Nvidia right now for any work load that uses CUDA, 4K resolution gaming, DLSS (if you want to play high refresh rate high resolution), a generally better raytracing system, and some software extras like RTX voice and whatever that GPU accelerated streaming thing is called.
Nvidia used to have nvenc as a major point but in my experience Radeon’s H.265 encoding is just as good as nvenc now.
-
From an altruistic standpoint, we should support AMD right now to encourage more intense competition in the GPU market. Nvidia essentially has a monopoly on the gpu market right now, this is never a good thing for consumers.
From a 'nerd' perspective, you can run linux and a hackintosh (regular computer running MacOS) much easier on an AMD GPU.
AMD as a company champions things like Freesync, which is built on the open standard "Adaptive Sync" which now is widely supported over g-sync.
Compare with Nvidia's approach, is to make everything proprietary, like g-sync. Then they try to hide that by switching "g-sync" to actually use "Adaptive Sync", while re-branding g-sync as "g-sync compatible", to make it appear they supported the open standard all along, even though the g-sync proprietary tech is completely abandoned.
-
I've never had AMD change their drivers to block me from using their card in a VM because they wanted people to pay for their more expensive CAD card to run a VM.
After that I dumped all things Nvidia and they are on the blacklist with Intel on computer vendors I will no longer purchase.
ID: hifl662Those restrictions have been lifted now.
ID: hif3gh2Even if they are better and cheaper for your usecase? Isn’t what your doing being a full on amd fanboy
ID: hifdol0I mean they were pretty clear with that specific usecase. Different people have different priorities.
ID: hifh9yqMore like being an Intel and Nvidia hater
-
I like AMD's software more as everything i could ever need is in one place, as opposed to needing three separate applications for Nvidia(Control Panel + GeForce Experience + MSI Afterburner) one of which even requires a login for some reason
ID: hietm4pJust made a post but agree with you. BTW I am getting a 6700 next week what do you think of yours so far?
ID: hifkz1mSwapped my 5700xt for a 6700xt. Loving it.
-
Regardless of prices ? Easy then you go for whatever card has the most performance at a given time. I was going back and fourth on my last GPU purchase but got a good Amazon warehouse deal.. $$ for performance ratio makes the final decision here.
ID: hif0bf4I guess power usage would still be a factor
-
In my experience I go with AMD when I need emphasis on image quality, like on the computer I use as a video player in the living room. While if you need heavy use of OpenGL then it would need to be an Nvidia.
-
*Nvidias driver overhead if you are rocking a tad older CPU, you will get more out the system with a AMD GPU (up to like 20--30% extra)
*AMD SAM works better then Nvidia Rebar(higher fps boost)
*AMD GPU-s atm draw less power then Ampere when compareing like 3080 to 6800xt or let's say 6800 vs 3070ti but that only matters when you pay alot for your electricity OR during a hot summer that 50W might not seem like a big difference but it does accually matter when heating up your room just a tad bit faster
*Built in driver features is what alot of nvidia users say is nice when they move over, that you get Nvidia expirience without the sign up. Like fan control, temps OC/UV and such
These are like a few things that popped into my head that i would consider to be better then Nvidia but i could just aswell point out a list why nvidia would be better like DLSS adoption, and better raytraceing. In this market aslong you paid a good price for the card it realy does not matter if it's nvidia or AMD.
-
Radeon chill. It reduces my electricity costs significantly.
-
Don’t care about brand too much, tribalism for any brand is bad really If you have a 3070ti and are happy with the performance it gives, why change it?
-
Fewer cases of drivers bricking cards on AMD's side (and yes, the 3090 situation with New World is a HW/FW/driver issue). Other comments have covered the other few reasons, but mostly AMD doesn't really have an advantage outside price-performance and power-performance for regular Windows users.
-
I went with my 6900XT AMD because the price/performance ratio was there for my use cases (4k native res/no RT gaming). Given the timeframe when I got that card, the difference between a 6800XT and the 6900XT prices were small enough that ($1300 vs $1500) that I went full Navi
I went with the 5700XT before that because I wanted to see what big navi/ampere would bring, and paying $1200 for for a 2080ti was I thought ridiculous. The 5700XT was 6% slower than a 2070 super for about $100 less. I got my 5700XT for $370.
-
Supporting a company that actively contributes to the open-source community.
-
Linux and or hackintosh.
-
Depends on the games you play. The only AAA games I play nowadays are Resident Evil games, which run better on Radeon (though I sold my 390X for a profit and got a 1050 Ti after I finished RE Village).
-
More vram, less driver overhead, better rasterization performance below 4k, the architecture is built into consoles so as long as the consoles are being optimised any rDNA card will also receive driver level optimisations, AMD fine wine, imo a better software suite and lower power usage so less heat output. That's just some of the reasons I went AMD this generation. But, the big one is VRAM. As we saw with the 700 series and 900 series the VRAM is already falling short in some games. The 3070 is already falling flat in some games that are demanding north of 8gb for the highest settings. End of the day though, just buy what you want who cares
-
Nvidia driver has more overhead so depending on which cpu you have might determine how much performance you get... Althought it seems to be limited to a few FPS minus a few outliers
-
I am not very well versed as I've only been a part of the master race for less than a year but here is my take:
I have been using a sapphire nitro+ rx 5700xt for 9 months. Great card and love AMD control panel.
Bought a 3070 and returned within a week. Nvidias Contorl panel sucked and less Vram was a big concern. Went with a rx 6700 xt (comes next week) instead.
In the long run I think vram is going to be an issue (real quick) and much prefer amd control panel. Especially for a noob like myself.
-
I was able to get them easier for cheaper myself. People aren't fighting for them as hard.
I run a 6800xt right now. 3080 was my first choice. I had an XC3 for a month. It was shit. Hot, loud and would not ov3rckock even needing downclocking sometimes. I got a merc319 6800xt for retail. A friend wanted rhe XC3 and offered a little more than I paid. 319 was the same price but the best AIB build board I've had. VRAM and gpu die barely hit 60c. 30% fans max. And it overclocks like fucking crazy. To the point its effectively faster than that xc3 in every game. I don't care to spend more since prices have gone up. Perfectly content with this raging ass card don't see any need to go back to Nvidia.
-
Better in Linux. Faster in some games than Nvidia. Potentially more reliable (personal experience).
-
You don't need an account or AMD login to fully use the hardware you paid for.
-
If you play/game alot you should go with 16gb vram models+, so yea 3090 is a deccent choice also, but expensive
There are games where alot of nvidia gpu models are lacking in vram for good high quality HD graphic pack to play the game, so essencially games where you exceed 10gb vram it will be an issue with lower quality visuals God of war / FC6 and newer games that makes use of more than 10gb vram .. so buying nvidia gpu is a limiting factor for longevity/futureproofing
-
There is no good reason lol
ID: hielbymquite the detailed opinion you got there.
ID: hielxc8Lol, fair enough. I didjt want to say that Nvidia is better because I didnt want to enrage anyone here
ID: hiermjdI mean it’s obvious what you were trying to do.
-
Open Source all the way. So currently AMD is more ethical than nVidia.
-
The 3070 Ti is a good card. Not sure an upgrade now is warranted. When next gen GPUs hit, ask again.

Here's why :
/comments/8rbdtb/nvidia_anticompetitive_anticonsumer_antitechnology/" class="reddit-press-link" target="_blank" rel="noopener">https://www.reddit.com//comments/8rbdtb/nvidia_anticompetitive_anticonsumer_antitechnology/
Unpopular opinion here (I own amd cpu and have owned a few amd gpu) but I would choose nvidia over amd for a gpu given the choice. Dlss, less driver issues (historically), better rt performance, better emulator support (yuzu). There's probably more I'm not thinking of.
I really dont know why anybody would actively choose an AMD GPU over an Nvidia GPU at this point. I mean, these RDNA2 GPU's are good and nobody should be unhappy with theirs generally, but they're not *better* than Nvidia GPU's and they lack strong ray tracing performance and aren't capable of DLSS which is pretty amazing.
This wouldn't be so bad if AMD were meaningfully undercutting Nvidia on price, but they're not, so.....yea, I dunno. The VRAM is really their only good selling point right now. Maybe they can boast that due to AMD hardware in consoles, quite a few AAA games tend to run particularly well on AMD GPU's as well?
EDIT: Just saw that you're using a 3070Ti. At the price of that GPU, the 6800 actually is a pretty valid option in terms of value if we're comparing MSRP. 6800 is more powerful and costs less. The 3070Ti really is one of the poorer value Nvidia GPU's in recent times outside the flagship stuff.
I suppose there's the issue of Nvidia GPU's having less CPU overhead at really high framerates? This wont affect most people, but it's something to maybe consider.
AMD also has pretty nice software tools nowadays, I guess.
I usually trust opinions of people
That's a terrible idea. Trust independent reviews. The average PC gamer is ignorant and brand fanboys are everywhere.
There's also nothing wrong with mix and matching CPU and GPU. Going 'full AMD' has very minimal advantage. SAM works a little better on AMD GPU's, but this still not something that's proven to be a clear benefit overall.
I mean, these RDNA2 GPU's are good and nobody should be unhappy with theirs generally, but they're not better than Nvidia GPU's
In 1080p and 1440p better raster preformance is not better? like most of the market still is rocking 1080p screens and upgradeing to 1440p while 4k is a niche.
People are slowly moving to 1440p as its getting cheaper. 4k probably the niche market atm.
But yeah most gamers are on 1080p with entry lvl products.
Their all the same at this point. Now back in 2013 it was way different amd wasnt doing well in cpu or gpu. Then they did an overhaul new ryzen cpus right when intel had been lazy and ignore that people wanted more. And now amd is doing phenomenal in gpu space and if the do to the gpu what they did to cpu nvidia will be out preformed for once. The only thing is drivers amds drivers are good but nvidia has the better software support. There are technical diffefences like how they process the frames and the buffers used, but a 3070ti is more than enough for 1440p 120fps. And if you are having slowdowns and holdups and lots of chugging, upgrade the storage and boot drive, the RAM, the cooling solution for the cpu, upgrade the cpu, OR all of the above. Any one these is a good option.
Nvidia and AMD are blow for blow the same.
Theire is also a new technology if you havr both a Ryzen and an Amd gpu, I can't recall it's name.
Smart Access Memory?
Other vendors have similar ReBAR implementations available too
Tow things for me, better software wattman have everything in one app accessible with a shortcut in game. Lower cpu need, I game in 1080p so even if I got a new cpu for my 6700xt it is still a big deal. And vram and price is just a bonus. (went from 3070 to 6700xt)
There is no reason to go with AMD. AMD is not available here in PL at reasonable prices with thier direct shop being not for PL at all. Shop is also terrible. I'm on old 1080ti evga and 2x fe nvidia (3000 series) and probably it's not going to change in next 3 years (yeah I have 3 gaming PCs).
