Insomniac's Ted Price: Games studios must break the habit of brute-forcing through problems
2 : Anonymous2021/11/03 21:09 ID: hj77yco

I finished the legendary collection in June and it took me 120 hrs lol

3 : Anonymous2021/11/03 21:58 ID: hj7fe2e

I think ME3 being longer was justified considering it’s the last game in the series and it has to wrap everything up. ME3 gets a lot of shit for its ending but I thought everything up til that point was amazing.

4 : Anonymous2021/11/03 11:08 ID: hj4tnxy

Yo Insomniac can we get 20 hours of gameplay.

5 : Anonymous2021/11/03 13:25 ID: hj58dil

I got at least 20 hours out of Spider-Man miles and easily 30 out of the first one

6 : Anonymous2021/11/03 16:39 ID: hj61gjx

I didn’t get 20 out of miles (but I haven’t gotten the Platinum yet), but I definitely got at least 30 out of the first one too. Especially if you got the DLCs for it, which were pretty decent

7 : Anonymous2021/11/03 12:17 ID: hj50der

Yeah try doing side quests and get a platinum trophy.

8 : Anonymous2021/11/03 11:24 ID: hj4v22t

Prioritising quantity results in stuff like Ubisoft games.

9 : Anonymous2021/11/03 11:59 ID: hj4yh1m

People are too hard on Ubisoft. They're not the highest quality games but they're great especially for lenghty games

10 : Anonymous2021/11/03 13:47 ID: hj5b875

I mean, I'm sure insomniac are very capable of making a game with great quality that doesn't take 2 days to finish

11 : Anonymous2021/11/03 12:13 ID: hj4zwo9

While I agree, Insomniac hasn’t really been doing much to think outside the box lately.

12 : Anonymous2021/11/03 12:40 ID: hj52vd1

Games can have quantity and quality at the same time. How long is The Witcher? 180 hours with the sidequests? Red Dead Redemption 2? The trails of cold steel series?

I ain't paying almost a 100 dollars for a game that will only last me a handful of hours. Some of us have a mortgage to pay for.

13 : Anonymous2021/11/03 13:19 ID: hj57kqa

You can prioritise both

14 : Anonymous2021/11/03 12:00 ID: hj4ykti

Game is 80 bucks, make it happen.

You can have both things believe it or not.

15 : Anonymous2021/11/03 12:25 ID: hj517o7

I know I'm the minority, but I'll always pick Ubisoft games over Insomniac. I'm yet to enjoy any Insomniac game released on PS4/5 this date.

Edit: After glancing through PS4/5 top sold games list of few months, I really don't think I'm in the minority. People indeed buy Assassin's Creed and Far Cry alot.

16 : Anonymous2021/11/03 12:23 ID: hj511lf

Quality over Quantity.

17 : Anonymous2021/11/03 13:12 ID: hj56py7

"Yo, insomniac, can we get loads of padding in our games instead of a nicely made, linear story like us gamers constantly say we want in response to generic Ubisoft open world game #742?"

18 : Anonymous2021/11/03 13:45 ID: hj5azyh

This is not a binary choice. I want both quality and more than 8 hours of gameplay.

Or at the very least don't be shameless enough to ask for 80 bucks for your 8 hour game filled with reused assets.

19 : Anonymous2021/11/03 11:22 ID: hj4uwmi

Virtually no games have 20hrs of gameplay unless they’re huge open world games that distract the player with side quests and side stories, and collecting things to craft and simply taking a long time to traverse the map.

I want games to be as long as they can make them in story, but to simply distract the player to add time isn’t what I want. The last of us part 2 is the perfect example of a very long game that is actually legitimately long in story

20 : Anonymous2021/11/03 11:24 ID: hj4v1xj

God of War was quite long

21 : Anonymous2021/11/03 11:45 ID: hj4x1su

FromSoftware games have 50-80 hours of gameplay on your first save file when you suck ass at the game

22 : Anonymous2021/11/03 12:49 ID: hj53xyo

Honestly pretty much. I just looked up HowLongTo Beat for previous Ratchet games, and average play time is around 12-14 hours. I seen Spiderman pop up, and again, around 17 hours on average. GoW is longest at 21-32 hours.

What I believe is that the combination of making the completionist achievable with one playthrough contributes to its more condensed experience. I personally don't mind the length because I want the spectacle maximized and experience tight.

But I imagine the sequel will be longer now that it's groundwork has been laid, and more than likely they'll re approach the ease of getting completionist.

Everyone sense of value is different, so rather trying to force Insomniac to pad for the sake of padding, just wait for the price to drop to what you're comfortable with.

23 : Anonymous2021/11/03 13:21 ID: hj57rxl

Maybe if you're only talking AAA games from the last 3-5 years. There's a hell of a lot of non open world games that are longer than 20 hours man.

24 : Anonymous2021/11/03 12:02 ID: hj4yr7z

TLOU2 ftw

25 : Anonymous2021/11/03 12:33 ID: hj52491

This is a terrible take. Slay the Spire, Dead Cells, Civilization, Returnal, every FromSoft game, I could go on. None of those are open world collect-a-thons. If you're exclusively referring to single player linear games, sure more probably fall under 20 hours then over. But there's plenty of games where you can get 20+ hours of quality gameplay, even single player, story-focused games.

26 : Anonymous2021/11/03 11:59 ID: hj4yhcy

funny that you mention tlou2 people I found that game far, far, far too long (this is coming from someone who plays 50 hours rpgs often) because it has god awful pacing and far too many cutscenes

27 : Anonymous2021/11/03 13:45 ID: hj5b0ds

I mean, if you do side quests and shit in their games, like Spider-Man they take 20 hrs

28 : Anonymous2021/11/03 15:33 ID: hj5r1q4

Metroid Dread gave me about 7hrs of gameplay but I loved every single second of it and by the end of it I didn't think I needed any more.

I'm super grateful that games like this exist.

I agree though that 20hrs is usually a good sweet spot for most games.

29 : Anonymous2021/11/03 14:32 ID: hj5hql7

Ironically, this is seen as one of the major causes of development inflation. The market demanding longer games. Where 6 hours games used to be acceptable, gamers now demand 15-20 hours, minimum. This increases development time and cost, not to mention pacing issues with the plot/storyline and to cut corners developer's often copy and paste content just to pad it out. I'm against the idea of minimum hours of gameplay.

30 : Anonymous2021/11/03 14:00 ID: hj5d0a2

"QuAlItY OvEr QuAnTiTy"no, i feel like there should be a balance considering that AAA games are getting more expensive, 12 hours of gameplay aint it for $70

31 : Anonymous2021/11/03 11:18 ID: hj4ujjf

[deleted]

32 : Anonymous2021/11/03 11:25 ID: hj4v4ic

Maybe don’t assume everyone spends time getting collectibles and doing random side stuff? I mean, even if it was 20 hours $70 would still be a big ask.

33 : Anonymous2021/11/03 11:25 ID: hj4v4i3

Ratchet is a great game but are you crawling through the game? I didn’t rush at all and 100% the game in 12-13 hours.

34 : Anonymous2021/11/03 11:25 ID: hj4v66d

How have you managed that? I've got the platinum in 16 hours and I wasn't particularly rushing.

35 : Anonymous2021/11/03 11:27 ID: hj4vcjp

What are you on about? According to "how long to beat" it takes around 11h on average to finish the game and around 17h to 100% it. Just because you take double the time than the average does not mean people are not enjoying it or rushing it.

36 : Anonymous2021/11/03 11:25 ID: hj4v5fu

Not calling you a liar or anything, but I've spent a lot of time getting collectibles and admiring the graphics and I beat the game well under 20 hours myself. Thats fine with me tbh, I don't like bloat in games anymore.

37 : Anonymous2021/11/03 13:28 ID: hj58nwg

Quality over Quantity. I hate long games.

38 : Anonymous2021/11/03 12:06 ID: hj4z7cu

Ted Price is just “Spiderman studio boss” now? 🙁

39 : Anonymous2021/11/03 09:38 ID: hj4mk9k

Not a fan of Insom getting this platform/props for being anti crunch when really they're just outsourcing it to SE Asia.

It is of course good for their employees though.

40 : Anonymous2021/11/03 10:06 ID: hj4olj3

This still isn't substantiated and has largely been rumors started by comments like this one.

Just because Insomniac outsourced something to a support studio that was known to have crunched on another game it worked on doesn't mean it crunched when Insomniac outsourced to them. There isn't one single shred of evidence to back that up. For all we know that studio was pressured by CDPR to rush things for cyberpunk but when Insomniac outsourced to them it could have been for smaller scale things.

Also, even if that outsourcing studio was found to have crunched when they worked for Insomniac, that still isn't Insomniacs fault. They chose a company to help with a product and that company handles it how they want.

41 : Anonymous2021/11/03 10:22 ID: hj4pquk

You are correct that I am assuming that they did not have special working conditions for MM specifically. It is possible that Insomniac demanded specific working conditions as a conditions of their contract with them, but I personally doubt that.

42 : Anonymous2021/11/03 10:53 ID: hj4sbk0

What does one have too with the other? If I contract a construction company to build something I can't control how their boss treats them overseas.

43 : Anonymous2021/11/03 11:08 ID: hj4tl3j

With enough influence, of course you can. Look at what went down with Apple factories.

44 : Anonymous2021/11/03 11:07 ID: hj4tk1x

Construction probably not the best comparison. The owner 100% can dictate everything that happens on a jobsite lol

45 : Anonymous2021/11/03 12:22 ID: hj50w9j

I just don’t take him seriously speaking against crunch when the industry solution seems to be outsourcing it to third world contract studios.

46 : Anonymous2021/11/03 09:40 ID: hj4mor2

Is SE Asia crunching? Otherwise I don’t see a problem with it.

47 : Anonymous2021/11/03 09:55 ID: hj4nqdl

They are, which is the issue.

If you're interested. The focus is on CP2077 but one of the support studios interviewed worked on Miles Morales.

But its not like they're a unicorn, most AAA games outsource to countries and companies with more "relaxed" labor laws that are further away from the US PR spotlight.

48 : Anonymous2021/11/03 11:23 ID: hj4uxu3

Why else would they outsource?

49 : Anonymous2021/11/03 17:30 ID: hj69o67

Back to leetcode!

50 : Anonymous2021/11/03 17:45 ID: hj6c1nv

Why do these games need to be so ginormous?! Cut all the playtime and half and release twice as many titles. I prefer variety over some 60hr campaign with residual sidequests as long as my unread email.

51 : Anonymous2021/11/03 20:12 ID: hj6yzyi

Ted who?
