The divine horror aesthetic of XIII is so, so good

Agreed, and I think people are finally starting to soften up on the game.

XIII's biggest crime, imo, is taking way too long to allow you to have access to the full combat system.

The linearity is fine, I prefer focused games anyway. I found the environments to be fantastic, even if the level design was lacking. The game still looks gorgeous even today.

The OST, as per usual for this franchise (even when it's not Uematsu), is absolutely stellar.

I thought the main story was also really interesting, and thought the ending was nice. The characters weren't my favorite (with the exception of Sazh, love that dude), but they definitely had their moments.

At the end of the day, it's not my favorite from the franchise, but it's certainly still a good game. I'm happy to see it get more love these days.

Someone a bit more enlightened may be able to answer this for me... Was the XIII trilogy always the plan, or did SE get dollar signs in their eyes and sign off on this? I'm asking because this dude's motivations come out of freaking nowhere, and I'm curious if there were any clues to this in the previous two games. Like, I know the datalog in XIII talks about Bhunivelze and Etro and the other parts of the mythos, and like most I bemoan the fact that I had to read an in-game wiki to know these wonderful bits of world-building, but I can't recall if the seeds for the troperiffic "God Kills Everyone" reveal were planted in that title or in XIII-2.

From what I’ve read and heard, the sequels (at least the first one) were greenlit mainly because XIV 1.0 was a huge failure, so the sequels would help recoup some of the losses. I have no idea how true that is, but it would make sense considering how XIII ended with no real cliffhangers or “to be continued” feeling, XIII-2 started that.

I don’t know, but the sequels are nice but unnecessary, imo.

From what I understand, and based off of XIII's original ending, it was not planned. XIII has a nice ending that wraps everything up well and gives a good open idea for what could come next. But Lightning and the game were so popular in Japan the scenario writer kind of was thrust into making a huge trilogy and even tho he had a great setup from his last game, he retconned it and made it the mess it is. A beautiful mess, but a mess.

I remember seeing somewhere showing some bits about stuff from ffxiii-2 in ffxiii but I only remember that there's someone symbol in some lights. So, at least one continuation was planed...

FFXV was designed as a spinoff initially. I believe the Type-0 games were as well if memory serves.

None of the sequels were planned, not even LR despite the "To Be Continued..." at the end

Bhunivelze's plan got tweaked by Lightning Returns' poor localization if that's what you mean. (His plan was to ||take over Hope's body to be a God among men but that got change to him wanting to fuse with the entirety of humanity to uh I'm not sure why||)

I'm not sure what you're referring to when you say "God Kills Everyone" tbh. He wanted to kill Mwynn, his mother, for sure, since before XIII, but in LR he is trying to save humanity, he just only wants "pure" souls, hence why all the dead souls are going to be destroyed

So from what I recall, it was planned, they labelled it as Fabula Nova Crystallis. So what’s known now as FF15, was supposed to be FF13. That then all got changed, so the trilogy kinda got mashed together? The data logs does give drips and drabs of the lore, but that’s pretty much it.

From the quality of the sequels compared to 13 tells me that 13-2 and LR weren’t planed. I like them but they are a mess of a plot.

I love the way this boss blended with battle environment. The OST is awesome too.

I love this!!

Looking kinda schmexy for the literal devil of the FFXIII-verse, ngl. Still gives me the creeps though...

That's bad ass!

Fighting them at the end of Lightning Returns was such an incredible climax. The guy had like 5 forms, every time you thought you were done, he just got back up. Finally, fighting a god FELT like fighting a god.

That Final Fantasy XIII series was a hell of a ride. Felt a little like Nier and depressing at times. But that final battle of Lighting Returns was nuts. I really enjoyed Final Fantasy XIII-2's battle system.

Possibly the best designed final boss in the series. Oh the Divine Horror this god emanates.

11 : Anonymous2021/11/05 16:51 ID: hjfp1s3

XIII had so many epic bosses.

The game have its issue but overall, a truly amazing boss!

Beat LR for the first time a couple weeks ago. Loved this guy’s design.

14 : Anonymous2021/11/05 18:52 ID: hjg7xaj

Back when the game first came out, I remember not being able to beat the final boss.

I played it again recently and swept the floor with his ass. Oh, the folly of youth.

This is so badass! I might snag this for a DND villain

He's genuinely terrifiying as a final boss concept though.

There's always the JRPG meme of "save my cat" into "Now kill god" But FF never really did that. It was always extremely powerful sorcerors going higher and higher in power to rule over all. Even Kefka started as a high ranking mage.

Lightning returns on the other hand, she was always set to fight god. This is THE god, the reason for all of the shit in Nova Crystalises and she had to fight him and put him down and even then canonically he's only in stasis because HE IS GOD.

Yuel and Caius had to stay behind with the Chaos as well as making sure he doesn't wake up.

Even more so when you consider how religious FF13 people are as a whole. The Fal'cie are the "living gods" of Nova Crys' and the people thank them for whatever or speak against the ones on Pulse because they do what they want. You get to the end of the world and you find out that the two/three gods of Lindsie, Etro and the other one are actually only employed by an even HIGHER god who technically birthed them.

I went giddy when this guy started throw-back attacks like “Heartless Angel” and “Dancing Mad”. One of the best final boss theme in the Final Fantasy series too IMO
