Looks like a Chrono Cross remake may be on the way

I played it when i was younger but couldn't enjoy it as much as it deserved. I couldn't comprehend the intricacies of the combat system. But the music stuck with me and i still listen to it to this day.

ID: hlt2v8o

Same for me as well but if this is true I will try to complete it this time. Listening to Time's scar brings me back to my childhood.

ID: hltwmch

It's no surprise to me that someone would love Chrono cross music even without playing the game. It's really one of the best videogame soundtracks out there for sure.

3 : Anonymous2021/11/23 18:07 ID: hlsnjl6

This could be huge if it's actually a remake and not just a cheap remaster. Chrono Cross could really use some updates and not just slightly better graphics.

ID: hlt0nzb

yes, coming out at the tail end of the ps1 gen(iirc) i feel cross was overlooked and limited by the hardware. the scope of the game was just too much for ps1 imo. this is probably one of the top games on my list of all time that deserves a remaster

ID: hlt34i0

It did. That game was phenomenal. The soundtrack was very memorable.

ID: hlt7sp8

Even so, I loved it as a child. It fit in so well with all of the other amazing PSX era JPRPG. I'd love a remake.

ID: hlt1b0m

My biggest concern is how is it going to handle the "this is a sequel to Chrono Trigger" thing better than the original.

ID: hltasqk

Despite the article title, it's actually talking specifically a remaster.

Read articles folks, c'mon now.

I need to finally play Chrono Cross. Might be my next pickup from the Vita PlayStation Store since I'm marathoning Final Fantasies in anticipation for XVI and I've only ever played Trigger

ID: hlsvxjv

I absolutely loved Chrono Cross. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed!

ID: hlt94ll

All I know about Cross is that it retains some form of the time period travelling system from Trigger and its combat is basically like Trigger + the Materia system from Final Fantasy VII (which already made it one of my favorite variations on ATB) so it was always on my radar

5 : Anonymous2021/11/23 19:29 ID: hlt00rz

Looks like its just a remaster. Even so, would be cool if they could re-work some things to tie it in better with Chrono Trigger. cough Guile cough

ID: hltmgwd

AKA "Definitely Not Magus".

6 : Anonymous2021/11/23 18:20 ID: hlspjky

I’m all for updates and remakes, but, for this, I’d want them to keep the overall gameplay style untouched.

Speaking of remakes though- what I wouldn’t do for a modern update to Parasite Eve.

7 : Anonymous2021/11/23 18:04 ID: hlsn1si

Whoaaaaaa HELLO that’s cool!!!!!

8 : Anonymous2021/11/23 19:43 ID: hlt2au7

Dont fuck with my feelings.

9 : Anonymous2021/11/23 18:31 ID: hlsr9a5

Please please please please please please please please please please please let this be real.

ID: hlsxssj

Oh, it seems to be real. This has popped up probably three times now. There just seems to be confusion about whether it's a remake or a remaster.

However, 2 of the 3 sources refer to it as a remaster.....

10 : Anonymous2021/11/23 19:42 ID: hlt22dx

Basically been waiting 20 years for this. Trying not to get my hopes up but I can’t think of a better game to get the remaster treatment!

ID: hlt9xh3

*cough* Xenogears *cough*

11 : Anonymous2021/11/23 21:08 ID: hltfasy

I'm surprise that people are only starting to talk about it now. It was part of the nvidia leak that happened 3 months ago.

this was also part of the leak:

Square Enix:

Chrono Cross Remaster FF Tactics remaster FF7 Remake FF9 Remake FF 16 Tomb Raider Anniversary (2021) Unannounced title by Square Enix Kingdom Hearts IV
12 : Anonymous2021/11/23 19:13 ID: hlsxmml

Legend of Dragoon after please?

ID: hlsz6g7

Well, Sony is Legends of Dragoon...Squeenix is Chrono.

2 different companies

ID: hlsy3wj

I'd even be happy if they gave us a decent remaster.

13 : Anonymous2021/11/23 18:45 ID: hlsteue

I rather have a chrono trigger remake than this to be honest.

ID: hlt0wd0

Eh. CT is still super playable by today’s standards and looks amazing, I understand that people want to see it HD but I don’t think the game needs it. This game on the other hand is a product of early 3D graphics and I would love to see a modern take.

ID: hlt9q0l

Not true, I would love a Secret of Mana style remake at least for CT.

Even better if it is done as anime style drawn by Akira that would be amazing.

There are a lot of things you can do with CT

ID: hlt6m4y

It doesn’t have to be a full blown remake. Even something related to octopath traveler would be nice I think.

ID: hlsy7m2

But chrono trigger is perfect as is, meanwhile chrono cross would benefit from a remake

ID: hlt6uxy

I thought the same same thing when it came to FF7. But the remake was amazing. I honestly think CT can benefit from it. And the newer generation of players can experience it for the first time too.

ID: hltps8c

Same but Cross is more in need of one tbh.

I'm not sure with Trigger it would need a full blown FF7R type of remake though. I think it'd look nice as an Octopath-looking remake though.

Hell forget a remake, i'd take just a remaster on current consoles tbh. It'd be a perfect Switch game especially.

14 : Anonymous2021/11/23 19:43 ID: hlt28js

Despite being a massive chrono trigger fan I never played Cross so consider me interested.

15 : Anonymous2021/11/23 19:08 ID: hlsx011

Chrono Trigger Remake>Chrono Cross Remake

ID: hlt4ofp

Could you imagine a 2-pack though!? :O That would be amazing.

16 : Anonymous2021/11/23 19:02 ID: hlsw128

remake remake remake...

17 : Anonymous2021/11/23 18:33 ID: hlsrg05

I've never really played more than a few minutes of Chrono Cross, but have always meant to do a proper playthrough. One thing I remember in my limited exposure was a "Attack / Stronger Attack / Strongest Attack" battle system.

I did, however, just get done playing about 20 hours of Xenogears (before quitting the game in boredom/disgust -- fuck Kislev). I hated the battle system (among many other things), which was also "Attack / Stronger Attack / Strongest Attack"-focused -- with no real opportunity for strategy or fun. Just watching different attack animations based on the order you press the buttons.

Please tell me these games don't have the same battle system... Do they?

ID: hlssit0

Much different. Chrono Cross is much more focused on which elements you are using and stringing together like elements and different combinations.

ID: hlssot4

No they do not! I too have played a good share of both Xenogears and Chrono Cross and I'll tell you that Chrono Cross is a lot more customizable, fast, and easier to understand.

ID: hlsv83u

Chrono Cross has an element system.

The battlefield itself has an element, so if you use a red element, the battlefield gets a red element to it. The battlefield has 3 elements at any given time, so the newest can push out the oldest. Every character and enemy also has innate elements they are proficient with.

So if the field gets a full red elemental color, all red skills and magic will be boosted, while any blue would be lessened. Still, using a blue element will push off a red one, making red elements less strong for at least another few turns, until the enemy can get the field back to all red. This is beside the basic attacks, as well.

It seems more complicated than it is, once you get going it’s easy to catch on and it becomes about building your party’s loadout of elements to complement each other, and simultaneously countering the area enemies.

Enemies are also on the screen, so they can be avoided. Levels are also gained at predetermined points and after beating certain bosses, so “grinding” isn’t really a thing in that game. You can gain mini-stat increases from regular battles, so avoiding them all can hurt you, but you don’t have to go out of your way to grind fights to level up.

*Remaster

The 'remake' was the original rumor, but it came from a non-gaming type person who was doing the music IIRC. But these recent rumors suggest it's more accurately a 'remaster'. Though of course nobody here is going to read the article to learn this!

Anyways a remaster would be quite welcome anyways. I still haven't ever gotten far in this, and it also happens to be like one of the only reasons I have my PS3 around still(along with Persona 3).

19 : Anonymous2021/11/23 22:32 ID: hltrsoj

Why not chrono trigger!?

20 : Anonymous2021/11/23 18:31 ID: hlsr5f7

This is cool. If I had to choose I'd have taken Legend of Dragoon instead, but maybe if the ps1 jrpg remake wave is successful we'll eventually get something with that IP.

21 : Anonymous2021/11/23 20:00 ID: hlt4vsc

This sounds like a remaster with a re-recorded soundtrack. I'm already excited as a fan of the original game.

22 : Anonymous2021/11/23 20:10 ID: hlt6g6r

Chrono Cross was my favorite game for the longest time. I loved the battle system, the music, the characters and the story. If they do this, this means there is a chance a 3rd game in the Chrono series can finally be made. After 21 years. Incredible.

23 : Anonymous2021/11/23 20:23 ID: hlt8ahh

Lol I tried posting this this morning but it got immediately/auto deleted. Subreddit must have an auto delete for VGC articles but will take other news outlets citing them as a source, guess it wouldn't be the first time I've seen bias here.

24 : Anonymous2021/11/23 20:30 ID: hlt9fvj

Shame it is not Chrono Trigger.
