Is it worth upgrading to a 5800x from a 3700x for $300?

I have an rtx 3080 and 1440p 170hz monitor. Is it worth upgrading for $300 to the 5800x? I do play a lot of CPU heavy multiplayer games like Battlefield. Would I notice a significant improvement?

Wait for Ryzen 3D V-Cache

But then I would have to spend full price which makes it less worth it.

It depends on how much you suffer with your current setup.

Optimization of the latest Battlefield is pretty bad from what I've heard and should get better with time.

That said, I would ride the 3700X until 3D V-Cache CPUs are dropping in price due to Zen 4 release at the end of 2022.

I just made this purchase myself for this upgrade from the 3800x to the 5800x and was in your exact shoes. My reasoning was it’s the most recent architecture and the last for the AM4 socket so might as well have it spec’d out until the day I need more power. I told myself selling the old chip would justify the cost.

There is one more CPU refresh imminent for AM4. The 5000 series cpus are being refreshed with dramatically increased cache. Likely in early 2022. So there will be one more CPU beyond the 5800x before AM5.

For 300, I wouldn't.

For 100, I probably would.

I could sell my 3700x for $200 so it would be about $100 after that.

If that's the case, I would ^^ Especially Battlefield will see a big improvement

In my opinion it's worth 100% - I just upgraded from a 3600 that ran @ 4.5ghz. Sold my 3600 for 150. Got the 5800x for 350. So $200 difference. For you even less, do it.

100% happy with the switch and I do play CSGO competitively, other cpu heavy games have much smoother frame time and much better 1% lows - which is what you notice.

And this is with a 6700XT that is OC past what a regular 3070 can do.

Exactly. Do it.

If you play BF, then yes.

At 1440p the difference is not going to be noticeable and you are going to feel buyer's remorse if the 3D cache processors end being a significant upgrade.

Which GPU is it paired with? If Battlefield 2042 is important then it will probably be worth it. At least from my experience with a 6900XT I am limited by the 3700X singlr core performance in that game.

3080

Even more reason to do it. Just resell the 3000 series.

Depends a lot on the particular games, but generally i would say yes. I haven't benchmarked a lot of FPS games - and stuff like Battlefield is infamously hard to benchmark properly - but between Matisse and Vermeer we almost universally got 50%+ FPS gains for the MMO & RTS genres.

Vcache is gonna be great too but like you've said, a good scenario would be that they show up a few months from now at a 33% greater price tag.

Did the same thing few months back, apart from the CPU price, another thing to consider is thermal, 5800x run abit hotter then 3700x, if you already cooling solution that can handle 5800x then all good, otherwise you might need factor that cost too.

I have a noctua dh 15 so yes that should not be an issue.

Did you find it to be a worthy upgrade?

10 : Anonymous2021/11/26 23:29 ID: hm7lxtg

Totally up to you on the weight of the bang for your bucks but I would continue to ride with what you have until AM5 is out and then either pick up the final gen AM4 at a discount or go all in on the new AM5. You are not going to see huge gains with the proposed upgrade.

ID: hm7nai7

Right but I could sell my 3700x with the cooler for $240 and buy the 5800x for $300. So it would be a $60 upgrade and that would hold me over until AM5.

11 : Anonymous2021/11/26 23:34 ID: hm7mju2

I went from 3900x to 5900x and my framerate lows are a lot more consistent. With a 170hz display I bet the 5800x would smooth things out a lot for you.

thats a hard no
