Want to build a gaming PC in a Razer Mini-ITX case build w/ large GPU for my Niece, need help.

1 : Anonymous2021/12/02 17:06 ID: r7c0o9

Hi,

I have not done a lot of ground up computer builds, but I've done a lot of swapping out of hardware, and repair. I have a lot of questions. And I understand it is possible to pick items that either do not fit together or need significant configuration to work together. I do not want to give her a computer that needs a ton of maintenance work.

I built a shopping list, but I would like it critiqued.

This list comes in at $2,130 to $2,510, my sister wanted to spend the $3,200 on the tomahawk NUC / 3080 system they have off the shelf. So I have plenty of room in this budget to upgrade if something could be done better here.

Please give me feedback. I really appreciate you taking time to help me with this.

This is my shopping list so far

When you look for a Nephew that you can gift hardware like that iam your man ! 😀

the CPU Cooler is a BIG No go way too small.

Okay, the cooler is too small.

So something more like one of these two?

# cpu cooler & fan

- Fractal Design Celsius+ S24 Prisma Liquid CPU Cooler, $170

- ARCTIC Liquid Freezer II 280, $120

I appreciate this! Thank you! This is awesome feedback. I will keep you in mind as a candidate to be my nephew. 😀

Switch to the NZXT H1, it's dead simple to build in and even includes stickers numbering each step of the way. Includes a 650w gold power supply and 140mm water cooler as well.

Hi,

Do you think I can shoe horn one of these into a Mini-ITX case?

A Razer case is large for a Mini-ITX, but I still have to get the big GPU in there.

ID: hmyhvsi

Got no experience with Razer Cases at all. you definitely need some more room compared to just 2 fans on tha same place.

Btw are you sure the PSU is strong enough that comes with this case ?

3 : Anonymous2021/12/02 17:37 ID: hmyfohp

Jeez.... lot of pc there how old is she and she is getting that lol.

Well as for fitting we dont know what 3080 you are using they vary in size and thickness. Also ditch the 120mm aio either a beefy aircooler or 240mm or larger aio is what you will need. Aircooler will be less potential issue than aio in the future.

ID: hmypj9p

Hi,

Okay, I may have to read through that a few times before I fully understand it. But I can do that. Thank you for the comments!

So the 3080 could differ in size and thickness. I was thinking about the NVidia, but theses things are all sold out. I really have no idea how to move forward? Do I literally have to build this thing around the GPU?

So you do not think I need a CPU air cooler? Or I do, and then just put one big exhaust fan on there? I'm honestly confused how the fans will all work.

And to answer your question, we are a family of Engineers, and pretty much every one of us fall somewhere on the spectrum. She got a little more of the juice than the rest of us. For example, I was on the

She is in middle school, but she is interested in learning Python. And having something that she is really proud of would ultimately help her with her confidence.

You need a cpu cooler, but initially you had a 120mm aio cooler setup. Those are almost poibtless especially on a 5800x or 5900x. Look into a tower aircooler such as noctua d15 for example. I believe it will fit but check the dimensions of coolers that case allows. You should be able to find that on basic product pages for them. Plus the only potential point of failure is the fans unlike an aio which adds a pump as another point of failure.

I always check finished pcpartpicker builds to answer "will it fit"

Was this meant for me or OP? Im not curious if it will fit. Im good with going of case measurements.

I'd go 32GB ram if you're at this budget.

ID: hmyqaoh

I honestly think the same thing.

16 GB seems to be what is out there, so I left that at 16GB to see what other people thought.

Thank you for the feedback.

Ditch the razer case. High end components and support for only 3 120mm fans with a glass side panel choking out the GPU is a big nogo. Look as something like the cooler master nr200. You get all mesh, support for 280mm aio cooler, 7 fans, all mesh side panel, and support for a triple slot GPU. Also you are spending all this money and cheaping out on ram and motherboard? Look at this motherboard and get decent ram. Also for like $20 more you can get an actual good nvme

You wanna make sure you have your hand on a GPU first before beginning to gather the other components, otherwise it will be depressing to build a system that doesn't even run.

I do not want to give her a computer that needs a ton of maintenance work.

It sounds like your niece doesn't know a lot of these computer hardware stuff, chances are she won't be using the computer to the max potential but only gaming potential. Unless you have a large budget, the 5950X is just not needed, and 5800X is a little bit hotter than other Zen 3 chips, so it is by your definition that might need pay some further attention to the temperature instead of finish building up and forget about everything kind of situation.

You either wanna just go for 5600X or wait 2 more months for Zen 3D V-Cache since you are unlikely to get a GPU unless you pay up for resell price. i5 11400 is also suitable for your kind of "build and forget" needs, and also i5 12400 is right around the corner.

I personally am using the Gigabyte Aorus Pro AX B550I mini itx board for over a year now, you must need to update the BIOS otherwise the CPU temp will spike up and down, and you need to do that in case she wanna go for Windows 11 in the future. I don't have problem with this board except two things

1) This notorious USB dropout issue occurring since the beginning was never fixed entirely, my red USB port (USB 3.2) if connected with a USB hub, it will have random dropout problem, not sure if it happens for USB hub only or is it just the red USB port problem, the solution is just to not use the red USB port, changing PCI-E to 3.0 in BIOS setting does not help

2) You are building the Razer mini itx case with RGB lighting at the bottom, so this aesthetic problem you might wanna pay attention to. The Gigabyte RGB Fusion 2.0 software is a disaster, this software is a large bundle of application installed all over the place in your C drive, I didn't need so many of these apps the first time I install this Fusion 2.0 program but just to change the RGB light strip on the motherboard, so I deleted this Fusion 2.0. After deleting it, my system will not post, does not boot into windows, the system just lock up entirely, restarting doesn't help, eventually got out of it with some soft reset. This was a problem from a year ago when I got the motherboard new, so things might change for the better, but I don't believe so because there are reviews done for this software and it is still a buggy mess and this software is full of 1 star rating. I have not touch this ever since, so you might be like me, stuck with the default static orange RGB strip since my case doesn't have glass panel, so I don't really care either ways. But you might care, so just a heads up.

3) One more thing, your Razer mini itx case has a USB Type-C port, but your Gigabyte B550I board does not. So, you might wanna go for something else such as ASUS ROG Strix.

Also finally, there are plenty mini itx case out there that is better than Razer Tomahawk mini itx, unless you have special preference towards this case, don't limit yourself to this case.

Hi, I'm still reading though all of this. This is chock full of valuable information for me!

Thank you so much! I will continue studying it and may have some follow up questions.

Thank you!!!

ID: hmzr6wi

Hi,

Okay, it took me a bit. Had to finish up my work day to really process all of that wonderful information.

What if I went with these two?

AMD Ryzen 5 5600X 3.7 GHz Six-Core AM4, $320 ASUS ROG Strix X570-I Gaming motherboard, $275

What should I use as a GPU? That frees up a lot of budget. But I want to use something that matches.

Also, the little sweat heart has an infatuation with snakes and lizards. I think that might be the only thing she cares about right now. 😀

Thank you again for all of your help!

check out

it has a compatibility checker that will tell you if parts are too big and pricing.

8 : Anonymous2021/12/02 22:27 ID: hmzoxfn

.. what does she intend to use this computer for?

Unless it’s quantum mathematics, you probably don’t need a 5950.

Also you don’t need a 200 dollar cooler for a cpu. The 40 dollar Amd wraith works. Unless you intend to try to overclock this thing (and you are not), you don’t need an expensive cooler).

So keep it simple, and save literally 500 dollars on a flashy part.

The Razer Tomahawk ITX is a rebranded/redesigned Lian Li case.

Apparently there is no dust filter on the bottom, and that is where the GPU gets most of its air. SFX power supply only.

I'm pretty sure that the "powered by Razer Chroma™ RGB" is just referring to the rgb lighting. You could buy a separate RAZER KATANA CHROMA if you wanted to. You are paying a premium for the RBG strips and green glowing Razer logo.
