- Since we are posting classics, how about K6 ?
-
I still was a sperm when this was made!
ID: hncjfxyID: hnck0juHow
ID: hncgao2My first custom build had the 300MHz version! But alas, no such thing as a 3D accelerator back then.
ID: hndbbhfMy first was a k5 75mhz which was upgraded to a 100mhz a year later with a righteous 2 3dfx card
ID: hnchtxaI wasn't due for another three years myself lol
ID: hncncva1999 here lol
-
1997, holy shit. It's almost 25 years old now.
ID: hnc11esyeah. 25 years since release.
When you think about it, it's like 1972 to 1997. man
ID: hnc2neyIt's also like, from 1944 to 1969. Damn.
ID: hnbxpv8Time sure flies right (even though I wasn't born yet back then).
ID: hncdrakYeah my hair going grey at 31 is reminding me of that lol
ID: hnc09j7I think you mean 7 years ago, surely?
ID: hnc3t4vDid I hear it was released last year?
-
I built my first PC with that CPU, it's where I got my username.

This piece of history is older than most zoomers posting their RGBs
ID: hncnj0uBut their RGB has more powerful microcontroller than this CPU 🙂
ID: hncxwf1Unlikely, most modern MCUs achieve about 1MIPS/MHz, which is roughly half the performance of a Pentium II/K6, but run at frequencies maxing out around 100MHz, whereas the older CPUs can go up to 500-700MHz. Still, it's impressive how far Moore's law has taken us.

I still miss my K6-166ALR and Voodoo Graphics 4MB build, thing was solid up to 99' where it began to show it's age in games and had to upgrade
ID: hnc75rfI have few full win95 and 98 builds. I do miss voodoo 🙁
-
Best time was seeing just how far you could push a K6-2 AFR, AFX and AHX core at 3.0v - 3.3v before it died.
A Thermaltake Volcano 5 with a Vantec Tornado granted a 200MHz overclock on my AFR K6-2 350. 600MHz was possible only by moving my PC into a drafty room during the winter.
-
if we are posting classics can i post my dad
ID: hncjod9if he is holding amd product? sure lol
-
I remember having its successor, the AMD K6-2 500mHz
ID: hnchcsoK6-2 was such a huge upgrade over the first gen, it was kinda the Zen 3 of K6 cpus
-
Man my first PC after inheriting an office 286 was a K5. And an ISA video card, 24 bit color, running Windows 95. Later I got a Microsoft Sidewinder Force feedback Pro bundle (best joystick I’ve had) and Interstate ‘76 was glorious.
-
My 233 seemed like a golden sample. It was misjumpered for 2.9vcore for a long time, and ended up spending most of its life at 3x75 or 3x83 on an ALI chipset (PCChips M560TG, so often branded "TXPro") board.
You could get it to POST at 3.5x83 with the right cooler and 3.5vcore, but it wasn't stable, and using a big clunky Socket A cooler put undue stress on the mainboard.
-
My dad was the same age as I am right now (13) when this came out
-
What kind of keyboard is that sitting on? For some reason that flat-base with the extruded keycap rising out of it speaks to my soul.
ID: hncigdjYeah I liked it too. My company threw it away so I scooped it up.
It's rubber dome but feels good.
You can see some pics here
ID: hncl4n2Thanks! eBay order is in 🙂
-
I had this. It sucked balls compared to Intel. Probably as fast as an Intel half it's clock speed. But it's what I used to play Quake. Always wish I had a K6-2 3DNow proc.
-
Nice
-
Nice! K6 233? My first K6 was a K6 300 in an Acer desktop.
ID: hnc9fxfyep!
-
My first custom PC was it’s next of kin. The 1Ghz Athlon K7
-
I had the 400mhz variant of this, loved it. I oc'd it to 450mhz and it required a bump in voltage, which you had to physically move jumpers on the motherboard to do.
-
This brings back memories. Between the Pentium 166/200/233 with MMX technology, then K6-II's, Pentium Pro, Pentium II's, K6-III's with a much larger L3 cache(for its time). All this to get some more FPS out of Quake, Quake II, Duke Nukem, Diablo, Starcraft, Unreal, Unreal Tournament, Half life, AoE, C&C. Most people don't realize the games that spawned off these generation of CPU's that has become the gaming industry today. Just to think most of us were running K6-II/K6-III'S & Pentium II/III's when the first Counter Strike & Battlefield 1942 games came out.
ID: hnd3ejiWait, there is no Counter-Strike in there... :'(
-
I remember my first AMD K6-2 computer. Such a beast.
-
Ah the ol' days of Original Diablo, Warcraft and Warcraft 2.
-
Cries in underperforms at Quake.
-
just building another retro rig as i type... one of the options is a k6-2 500 but i decided to go with a socket 370 celeron 400
-
My first PC had this exact CPU. It was a Compaq ( later bought by HP I believe ) pasario. I used it until I replaced it with an athlon 2500+. After that, I only bought Intel laptops until this summer when I built my 2nd PC ever, over a decade later with a 5600x. I kind of wished I kept all my old CPUs.
-
I have a couple of slot A Athlons in a drawer, one is decased. This was pre 1Ghz and it was overclocked with a single you plug in the top. Crazy the effort put in back then compared to today.
-
Can someone explain why this cpu was good? I did not exist til 2007 lol
ID: hnd3p00It wasn't that great frankly, performance-wise, but it was a very decent alternative to Inhell's already well established price gouging, overly expensive, but higher performance chips.
The K6-2 that came after was a true contender to the Pentium II's place, and while the K6-3 came too late, it was a beautiful chip that couldn't quite compete with the early Pentium IIIs on the basis of pure performance.
Also, it was great because it's history. Without the K6, no K6-2, no K6-3, no Athlon, no Ryzen, no AMD. And AMD are awesome.
-
Oof, guess this makes me an even older classic since I was born two years prior to the advent of the K6.
ID: hndaysnLol. That doesn’t make you old. It makes you young.
-
I had one
-
Ah, how fondly I remember building my brother's first PC with a K6-3 450Mhz. It was a BEAST.
-
My first build was a 400mhz K6-2, so yeah... memories! 🙂
-
It couldn't run Emperor Battle for Dune because Westwood used Intel compilers that used special instructions the chip didn't have. It certainly had the processing speed to play the game past. It just crashed after the first levels or so. A K6-2 has the ISA support to play the game. Westwood didn't clarify until a lot of people with these CPUs bought the game and didn't understand why it was crashing.
-
Looking at a Pentium 200MX, P2 233 and some 486’s. Various pc components and MB’s. Thinking about making a table, laying all the old parts on it and covering in acrylic.
-
Oh I have that one too!
-
My first cpu was k6-2 500mhz 3d now
-
Ah, Klass6ix
-
I have my old grandfather's PC with a build in that. Sat in his basement since 99 when he passed. What an awesome piece of history
-
Pretty sure my first "PC" that was the CPU I specced. I got one built from all the parts I specified. I think it had a 52GB scsi drive and windows 95. It wasn't my first computer. When I was in high school we got one of the first commodore 64's to come into the country. The first computer I bought myself was an Amiga 1000 in 1987....
-
My father still have one working computer with this.
-
I had a K6-2 that I believe ran at 300Mhz or so. Thing was an absolute turd and lost to a Pentium 1 at half the clock speed. Command and Conquer 95 would run at single digit framerates, to give you an idea.
-
What camera did you use to take this photo? It's super crisp
-
It was just oneplus 7t smartphone. It was taken last year
-
I had the K6-2 (featuring 3Dnow!) released in '98. I have lots of great memories calling BBS's on that computer.
-
My girst ever CPU, such a classic
-
goodstuff revolutionary chip that changed the game
-
I wish I would have saved all my classics, but instead I opted to sell them. Oh well, you live and learn =)
-
I wish I still had my Slot A Pentium 2 350.... 🙁
-
The cartridge one? I have that one too.
-
In all of its sega genesis cartridge looking ass glory!

I was not even a sperm. I didn't exist at all.
