- Rumour: Unannounced Splinter Cell Game Will Be Open World
-
Oh lord..Can't wait to see what a mess it will look like when they release it early.
ID: hnpzudiID: hnqihuuOnly 29.99 to skip the towers
ID: hnqcnuzNo, they will really switch it up, you will discover air traffic control centers and hack into recon drones.
ID: hnqbfzhthis comment gave me ptsd, fuck those damn towers
ID: hnqb7dhDont worry, just like the other 100s of splinter cell rumours over the years, this wint be true either lmao
ID: hnqp1ccIt's nothing anyone wants. It'll be true.
ID: hnqkkl8MGSV already did stealth open world, and while Kojima delivered a fun premise, I just don't see open world meshing well with stealth gameplay. IMO, it barely worked in MGSV.
MGSV had this problem where all "outposts" were basically the same. You don't want to populate the world with NPCs in it because it's a stealth game, so the world feels empty. And then the only interesting areas are saved for story missions anyways. It feels like such a waste to do a stealth heavy game that is open world. It should be the other way around, an action game that is open world can have stealth elements. Not a stealth game being open world with action elements.
This just sounds like assassin's creed with none of the historical charm
ID: hnqyzmmMSGV was so fun. Spent almost 200 hours
ID: hnqpap7Watch Dogs does open world stealth well. It's not the genre that is the problem, it's that an Ubisoft open world is a very specific thing, and that thing is a tedious grouping of checklists.
ID: hnqv3miCan't agree at all. It worked awesomely in MGS:V. I loved the game. Spent so much time playing it that my wife complained

One of the coolest things about Splinter Cell was that missions took us to all sorts of cool locations around the world. A cruise ship, a polar ice cap, Paris, embassies, a full scale fucking war zone in Korea. How are we going to get varying, unique locations like that in one big giant generic map? It’ll be some wilderness type setting with randomly dispersed generic outposts to sneak into and clear out and I’ll be extremely disappointed.
ID: hntnqo6They’re using the Crew 2 map.
-
Just what we need for super spy espionage simulation; a ubisoft map full of question marks and a perfunctory loot system.
Ubisoft, masters of copy and paste
ID: hnpxv2aYep. Super disappointing. Hate what they did to Assassin's Creed. Though the pre-Origin games were also open world collectathons, they still felt intimate, you still felt like an actual assassin traversing vertical environments and hiding in crowds. The last three games are just shallow brawlers with maps so stupidly huge and barren of anything remotely compelling.
I'd rather no Splinter Cell at all than see Ubisoft ruin it. Damn shame the Hitman devs don't have that IP.
ID: hnq7eu3Literally go to an area, collect the same shit, raise your power level, go to the next area and do the same. damn. thing.
ID: hnpyrkrTo be fair... Metal Gear Solid V is stealth open world, and that worked out.
ID: hnq2nioThey're not Ubisoft though.
Assuming this rumor is true, it would be a business decision, instead of a creative decision. Ubisoft is great for latching onto a game trend a couple years after it became popular, then leveraging it for business purposes.
Look what they've done to Ghost Recon... the next one is going to be a free-to-play Battle Royale game with NFTs. The Rainbow Six franchise is now a shitshow of nonsensical powerups and gadgets, several dozen heroes, and neon painted gear.
It's a bummer to see some of my favorite franchises being used to sell things that don't resemble anything from the source material.
ID: hnqmfi4Removing large bases with a lot of interiors removed the biggest component of what makes a stealth game. I won't pretend like the gameplay and mechanics weren't absolutely top-tier, but it lost a lot of it's soul in the transition to open world.
I'd much rather dick around in Shadow Moses, the Big Shell, or Grazni Grad than spend 10 minutes huffing it across an Afghan desert to come across yet another cut and paste guard post that can be captured in 20 seconds because Venom is so goddamn OP.
ID: hnqa15eDropping you a mile away from the base that actually had the objective wasn’t my favorite, and that specific part isn’t necessarily groundbreaking gameplay wise, a 1km radius around the area would have been more than enough imo. There’s nothing much around the drab desert and swampy/mudlands that really incentivizes not making a beeline from base to base, especially when you become able to fulton entire shipping containers of resources, the abundance of which you’ll find in bases anyway.
However an open world lends more to the idea of a “do whatever you want” sandbox, and it was that notion that kept me glued to MGSV for two playthroughs. As I mentioned the “Go here and then go across the map to there” parts are a bit tiresome, but that’s true of most open worlds, especially if you’d rather travel there yourself than use fast travel. But it’s having the freedom to go about all that how you like that made the game feel so good to me. Setting up ambushes around patrol routes, knocking out communications between outposts, hiding in vehicles/boxes to travel across the map hit sooo right for me.
Sometimes Ubisoft open worlds make the content feel so spread out just as a means to slow my progression so I’ll buy level boosters or whatever, which works in the opposite way where if I feel the gameplay is slow I’ll just play something more appreciating of my time.
ID: hnqrky2MGS 5 was great in spite of it's open world, not because of it.
ID: hnqukdrNot really. The open world was really just a bunch of empty corridors you had to run down to get to your objective.
ID: hns7nb6great stealth mechanics, dreadful playspace
ID: hnsts18the open world added nothing to it and only held the game back.

For fuck sake why does everything have to be open world nowadays its so damn annoying
-
Ubisoft used to be my favorite game company, and splinter cell my best game ever... Now i want to puke...
-
I'm sorry Sam, your level 5 night vision goggles will not work in this level 10 area.
-
What’s wrong with another high budget linear, story based title? Why is every damn game open world? Ffs
ID: hnrem0gEasier to shove MTXs into them.
-
Please no. So sick of open worlds, especially from Ubisoft.
ID: hnq9g3bAgreed because they always take the quantity over quality approach with that. Like there is no reason for an assassins creed game to take 90 hours to finish when all the missions are go here (1500 meters away) now meet this guy over here 2200 meters away.
The og games were the best and built right.
ID: hnqxf8uThe first was pretty ground breaking for its time. Loved that one. The climbing mechanics, semi open world (but not to the point of being completely overwhelming like odyssey), and assainations animations were all fun.
I enjoyed syndicate as well. It felt different enough to make it compelling to play. It's too bad that the engine for it is completely broken for ps5 backwards compatibility. I picked up odyssey on sale and remembered very quickly why I won't purchase another one of those games.
-
Oh boy, another Ubisoft open world game..
ID: hnqndr4Cant wait to climb up one of the 700cell phone towers to find the nearest 5 "data packs" or "dead drops" out of the 4623 scattered throughout the giant open world which i can travel through on bike that runs slower than a three legged blind tortoise
-
.... not like this
-
It's an ubisoft game, so yea not much of a bold statement there
-
Sounds awful.
-
I don’t WANT an open world splinter game. I want small, carefully crafted levels with multiple paths and creative take down opportunities and Easter eggs and banter.
I want Chaos Theory, not Breath of the Fisher
-
Can't wait to pick up all the flowers on the map to craft a better gun.
-
Larger sandboxes with a central hub like the plane in Blacklist seems like a good idea. The last two entries were really fun and co-op in them is top-tier gaming.
ID: hnrpmjpI really enjoyed the last 2 specifically because it was setup like that.
I’ve been waiting forever for another entry and this will be absolute dogshit and I’m sure of it.
-
It's Ubisoft.... Hard pass
-
If they can do what MGS did but add more indoor environments to sneak into im all for it.
ID: hntft03They probably can't
-
That basically already exists and it's the current version of Ghost Recon Breakpoint by the way. It's one of those game that Ubisoft turned really well after a bad launch, they actually add what the fans wanted and made it more and more tactical and stealthy and got rid of most of the RPG aspects.
-
Fantastic. Can't wait to mark every enemy on the map and fill my screen with yellow icons. Oh and towers!
-
And like that, my interest has fizzled away.
-
Great news! cant wait to unlock busy work on the map by climbing radio towers
-
Yay more open world because we don't have enough of those...
-
Open world, closed wallet.

But do you enjoy discovering towers?
