Hell, I’m 82 and fly DJI drones, etc. never tried the Oculus, but I’d like to someday….
ID: hoesiy0ID: hoewywqQuestion: how did you get into flying drones? I have an 89-year-old grandfather who would probably love to fly a drone, since he used to be an ATC and held a pilot’s license; but he’s not used to modern technology.
ID: hoey2ieThe fixed wing stuff from Horizon Hobby is great for people that want to fly and not deal with the complications of today’s technology. Highly recommend the UMX line for beginners. Those radios in the RTF versions can also work on real flight simulator.
ID: hoewniqYou can combine the two together and do those drones races
ID: hoeyy8xYou're 82 and on reddit? I'm impressed.

ID: hoexlhmPhasmaphobia in VR has to be terrifying... just playing it on my regular PC and wearing a headset was enough to freak me out plenty of times lol. The sound work in that game is awesome.
ID: hoey6hmYeah kinda ! But once you're used to it, it's a funny game I think

I showed my dad (75) my Oculus Quest last year and within 30 minutes of playing with it he got out his credit card and ordered one.
ID: hoect1yCould he possibly get his credit card out a second time?

Infanthood to childhood. Childhood to adultescence. Adultescence to adulthood. Adulthood to parenthood. Parenthood to elderly. Regardless of age or health, man's (ala humanity so including the ladies) love for the bosom never ages or wanes.

and they used to tell us dont sit to close to the tv smh
ID: hoeb0fxI believe what they were getting at is eye strain. With any similar activity it's good to give your eyes a rest and focus on something further away. From what I've read, the issue is about the muscles in your eyes focusing on objects nearby for too long at one time.
ID: hoejptbThe real reason is that "in a CRT screen the image is “written” on the phosphor on the inside of the screen by an electron beam - and a quite high voltage is required to send the electrons toward the screen. Both the electron beam in the tube itself, as it strikes the screen, and the rectifier tube in the high voltage power supply used to generate that voltage, emit X-rays… and exposure to too high a level of X-rays, for a significant amount of time, is bad for humans."
ID: hoeg5f6It was more becouse old boxy TVs were hurting your eyes

Wait, you bought your Gfs 85 year old father a 350 Dollar device? Out of the blue? Right BEFORE Christmas? What is he playing?
ID: hodtvinIt was an early Christmas present. I figured why wait, he's 85. Worth every penny.
ID: hodu2q6He was playing the roller coaster game here. He likes the videos too.

My elderly father is cheaper than shit. His favorite sandwich in the world is $10, so he only gets one twice a year. He talks about that sandwich constantly.
Anyway, he came to visit, and I showed him my HTC Vive. He immediately went home, bought a new gaming PC and a Vive setup. He spends hours in Google Earth just looking around. I don't think he's even looked at other software.
I think a lot of elderly people would really enjoy VR if they got a taste.
ID: hof24arI want to know more about his favorite sandwich.
ID: hof4w30Apparently it's a grouper sandwich from a place down by the beach, where he lives (near Tampa). He called me on the phone during the workday once, and spent like ten minutes telling me all about this sandwich, and the place he got it (it used to be a gas station, or something), and how they let you bring your dog, even though he doesn't think that's particularly hygienic.
I needed to get to work, so to get him off the phone I said "that sounds really good. We'll have to grab one the next time I'm down there".
He replied with something like, "Whoa, I'm not sure I'll go back there. It weas really expensive. I'm talking ten dollars expensive!" My father owns two homes outright.
In subsequent conversations, he's referenced the sandwich multiple times. I almost don't want to eat one. Either it'll change my life, or confirm that my father is senile.

That’s amazing! I found out years ago my Nan uses my old game boy colour to play Tetris on the occasion. So wholesome.
-
Make sure old bro uses the wrist strap or he'll put a window through!
-
Imagine how incredible that must be for him. He probably grew up seeing all of the goofy predictions as to what the 21st century would bring, such as hover cars, automaton assistants, full meals in pill form, etc. All supposedly to be available to virtually anyone with a job.
VR was a common one too, and he gets to use it at his leisure now. I'd be blown away.

wait till OP buys Medal of Honor VR

Is a PC required for one of these?
ID: hoe0kcsNo, it's standalone and runs android, basically.
You can use a PC to stream PCVR stuff like HL: Alyx.

I love this, i lost my 90 year old grandfather recently and he HATED all technology. I think if he'd embraced it he could have been a lot happier in his final years.

If you have the extra money I'd totally get it. Even if not for super active games some are amazing to just sit down and experience
