- Sifu is a Stylish Martial Arts Roguelite Mashup That Feels Great
-
So excited for this game. Looks incredible.
-
Calling it a "brawler" makes me interested.
Calling it "roguelike" makes me want to stay clear. Not my bag.
ID: hooqqqoID: hoph56vThey do say "Roguelite" which while maybe not a significant distinction to everyone is still a distinction.
Rogue was a very difficult, very randomized and procedural adventure game where death was game over and you had to start everything again from scratch, starting a new game.
Many games have adopted these ideas wholesale, difficulty and RNG and procedural generation and permanent death, and generally get close enough to the spirit of Rogue to be called "Rogue-likes". The most important thing being that upon failure / death everything you accomplished functionally resets except possibly statistics or achievements that do not alter gameplay at all.
Rogue-lites are distinguished by having meta-progression. There is a second layer to the game which can progress and advance and get stronger even when failing to advance or improve in the case layer. Hades is a roguelite, because if you die in Hades resources earned in that run are kept, character dialogues advance, certain events are based on past progress of number of attempts. These things changing on subsequent runs are the second "meta" layer to the game. Death isn't a hard reset, just a setback.

Hoping this is as "easy" as deathloop. I like the idea of the genre but not at the cost of my sanity.
ID: hooxm0uDeathloop was just a time loop game, not a roguelike.
ID: hooxzvsCouldnt you say the same about Returnal? Or Hades? Or Sifu? Lol. Every roguelite is a time loop because thats the only way they can justify resetting your character to the beginning after death.
ID: honxmhiDitto. If it’s anything like returnal I’m staying far away. I completed returnal but I was so put off playing anything for a while
ID: hoo5um7Im wishing the exact same thing. I'm still stuck on the second biome of Returnal, beautiful game but I don't have the time to dedicate a ton of time to it
ID: hopb9ljDoes Returnal have a game over feature? That's the only thing I see in this game that might be a turn off for some. If you die too many times you have to start from the beginning since your character dies of old age.
ID: hopf3wui hope it's not easy at all. i want a challenge!
ID: hopjp01And thats exactly why there should be an easy mode in every game. People want/enjoy different things. Take our trophies away if it makes people feel better.
ID: hoo7mkaIs dethloop easy then, I thought it was hard, which is what put me off getting it,
ID: hoo9o2cIf you’ve played a dishonored game before it handles similarly, but there’s a lot more leniency In getting caught. They removed manual saving, and there’s no penalty for killing people the way there is in dishonored. you’re meant to fail a few times, so they have it so that you can twice respawn to where ~30 seconds prior, with all the stuff you did having already happened. There’s a lot more of a focus on puzzles and exploration.
ID: hooi028Once you get through the tutorial phase. The game gives you alot of ways to make your character nearly OP. I thought that aspect was so much fun. Death was still a heavy penalty. But you had 2 tries before a full reset
ID: hoois12I don’t know if they patched this, but the AI was basically busted stupid on release. Like, you would actually have to try to get caught using stealth they’re that dumb.
ID: hopfgrsDeathloop is very easy of you can spot basic ai behaviour machanics and it is VERY hand-holdy with its story

While the game looked interesting and all that sort of things, I'm kinda tired of all these high-profile rogue-lite/like games from recent years. It's like game studios suddenly found a new gimmick to make the most playtime out of minimal content and went all in, making rogue-lite/like games that don't necessarily need to be a rogue-lite/like. It's like, "the next big thing" after open-world. And unlike open-world, many can't actually beat these games because of the high difficulty in the nature of rogue-lite/like, or have to spend hours repeating what's been experienced before actually making some progress. At least half of the playtime feels like a waste of time to me, just for that "sense of accomplishment" after hours of frustration. I admit it does feel good if I do it occasionally, but I certainly do not want every game to be like this (well, of course not every game will be like this, you know what I mean).
Sorry for the random rant, just had to get it out. Still liking what I'm seeing so far, definitely gonna play it when it comes out.

Seems like every other game coming out these days is rougelite lol
-
Saving up for this game. I really want it, but i may need to wait for the 1st sale it has.

I’m getting real tired of all the roguelikes in the last couple years. Feels like the new (lazy) way for indies to pad out limited content, for the purpose of charging a higher price than would otherwise be warranted.
ID: hoo7cjxMost indie roguelikes are pretty cheap though or am I missing something?
ID: hoogo9pI’m talking about what would in past years be a $10-20 game being sold for $40+. In contrast to something like Stardew Valley or Hollow Knight being sold for $15.
ID: hoou59qA good roguelike does just the opposite. A game like the BOI has vastly more content and variety than a game like Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, despite the latter being a linear style game (no looping) that’s a 100+ hours long. Playing the same type of level with 100 different enemies pulling randomly from 800 different items feels so much more fresh than a huge open world with the same combat at every encounter.
ID: hoo9or6I only recently got into roguelikes but they're kind of all I want to play now. A lot of other games just feel boring or drawn out with little variety in the gameplay.
ID: hoofx4hI’m the same way haha.
Hard to not love the genre with amazing games such as:
Slay the Spire
Hades
Skul
Dead Cells
Enter the gungeon
Returnal
ID: hooh5t5I’m not saying roguelikes don’t have merit or can’t be fun (like their Arcade game influences), but saying that they have more “variety” of gameplay than other types of games is straight up self-contradictory. Roguelikes are, by definition, very repetitive.

reminds of jet li rise to honor ps2
-
I've had my eye on this since it got announced and it's definitley my most anticipated game for next year. Looking forward to the close combat brawls ahead.
-
Wait it’s a roguelite? Well. That will likely save me spending money on it.

Based on some previws the camera seems to be a real problem since you're in tight spaces a lot. I really wish they allowed the camera to clip outside the environment.
