This game is a real surprise gem - which I think it's why people like it so much. I suppose also because it came after Avengers, an apparent let down. But damn is it working for me. The combat is really exciting. I'm smashing each encounter left, right and centre, but there's a constant threat of death. It reminds me of the best things about Uncharted and Fallen Order. It's also leapfrogged this series to the top of my superhero list. Most of the characters are how they're portrayed in the movies, but Peter Quill is sooooo much more likable and cool, and I thought I quite liked Chris Pratt in the role. The best space content since Red Dwarf. I'm on the last level and had to stop to post this.
Edit: Thanks for all the comments everyone. Appreciate your time. I definitely didn't expect this thread to get so much traction. Whether it's a 7, 8 or a 10, it really feels like most had a blast playing this game. It won the Best Narrative award at the Game Awards. It was featured in Digital Foundry's 2021 beat graphics video. It really is just a banger from start to finish and I encourage everyone to play it. Can't wait for number two.

Yup I just beat the game earlier today and was surprised by the quality. First time seeing the game I had 0 interest like a lot of others. But decided to buy it after seeing it getting lots of praise. Very rare to just have an old fashioned linear story game with no leveling or grindy aspects at this level of quality. For what it is its basically a perfect game the only thing that would make it better is more varied combat but I honestly wasn't bothered by only having 1 weapon.
ID: hqbvrkdID: hqc9aqsHow long is the story mode of the game? I just got a ps5 playing out riders I have been enjoying it but it seems like it is ps4 graphics and the environment is so dull to interaction
ID: hqchn7hAround 15-20 hours. It won’t really showcase how great the PS5 is the way Returnal or Ratchet and Clank do
ID: hqci45hPick up Ratchet and Clank: A Rift Apart, Spider-Man: Miles Morales, or the upgraded Ghost of Tsushima to see what the PS5 can do.
ID: hqc9qu1Yeah is not a game where it would shine the PS5, but is fun as hell!

It’s a good game. Wouldn’t say it’s a 10 because the combat isn’t the best. I’d give it an 8
ID: hqc1g3gAbout 1/2 through atm and it’s like playing a really well made movie with fantastic constant dialogue, but the combat is seriously lacking. It’s almost like the devs wanted us to play through a fantastic movie and left the actual gameplay (fighting) barebones, almost like an afterthought.
Overall I’m definitely enjoying it but I’m needing to play it in chunks.
ID: hqc1xsmYeah I agree the combat is a bit boring. Wish they would’ve given us an actual upgrade to starlords guns, and not just the elemental upgrades, they felt so weak to shoot
ID: hqdyp9iThe fighting is quite repetitive and extra skills didn’t seem to matter much. Final Fantasy 7 remake was far better in this area and allows you to change characters on the fly which Guardians of the galaxy doesn’t.
ID: hqcbpumI think it really comes down to what you're looking for in a game. The story and dialogue is definitely great, but the combat and platforming is so, so bad and boring. That will bother some people, others not as much or not at all. Personally it's a 6 or 7 for me
ID: hqcfx2yI’ve heard the combat summarized as “just running around holding the R2, waiting to give a group command”. Is this accurate? I’ve read great things but the combat seems to be somewhat shallow and has kept me away from it.
ID: hqd8te2On normal yes. On harder modes... Yes... but with a lot more variety because if you don't do the right things enemies will take slivers of damage. Dual guns are pea shooters if your not doing the right rock paper scissors.
In normal combat is what you make of it. Do you want to utilize all the tools you have, the environment, the abilities or just hold r2 until the thing dies. On harder modes you don't have much choice.
I would play it on hard - not extreme - which is appropriatly named.
it's not the type of game you'll play through twice really since it's a story game first but it does have a bunch of different dialog trees some which have unique outcomes so maybe you would play twice.
ID: hqclkupPretty much, just run around until individual commands are available, use them all, wait for them to recharge and do it again. Some of them work well together so there's a bit of thought you have to use, but the combat is easily the weakest part of the game.
ID: hqea2f5Super repetitive. A 6 for me
ID: hqc1y8vThat and the bugs, nothing game breaking but I've had to reset to the last checkpoint half a dozen times atleast and I'm on chapter 12.
ID: hqbzel2I'm only 5 or 6 hours in but agree. Combat is what I've liked least so far... but I'm loving pretty much every other aspect
Also I've somehow already had two freezes/crashes in the pause screen

The only reason it's not a 9/10 for me is because of all the bugs I experienced. Having to load my last save multiple times because I get stuck and can't move, characters going mute whenever they're supposed to speak unless I load my last save, combat sequences not ending even though all enemies are defeated forcing me to load my last save, etc. Loved the story, loved the characters and also thought the combat was fun. The constant bugs I was running into, not so much.
ID: hqbut0mIt’s an awesome game but there’s so many bugs. They didn’t ruin the game for me but it needs some polish.
ID: hqd5ay5For me the bugs were the only thing keeping the game from feeling like the same quality as a Spiderman, or Ghost of Tsushima.
I think that might be the Sony money difference. Throw enough money at a game and they’ll polish it up
ID: hqcsjd6I feel exactly the same. Great game but bug ridden. Annoying after some of the longer fights for the game not to register killing the last guy.

It was a pleasant surprise for me as well! I love everything besides the combat which gets a little repetitive I enjoy comboing with everyone but it can get old if they make another one I just hope they improve the combat and if thy do it will for sure be a 9/10 game currently more of a 8/10
Awesome Story with a good flow, makes you get invested.
Fun Dialog, great voice acting, makes the characters really shine and be their own and great chemistry.
Graphics is pretty good! Exploring the different locations is fun and interesting.
This is a well made game through and through, highly recommended! -
Do people prefer this game on the Quality (30 fps) or Performance (60 fps) mode?
ID: hqdz3s8Performance is all that matters.
-
Almost finished it. The gameplay is easily 5/10, but the story and characters are very well done. I'd rate it 8, for fairness's sake.
-
Combat is boring

Am I the only one that had a good ~60% or so of dialogues getting cut off everywhere all the time due to me having the audacity to walk forward and trigger scripted events or cutscenes that I didn't know would interrupt conversations?
I agree with others here that the characters and VO/dialogue etc where the standout parts (and the combat was very lacking IMO) but even that was tarnished by the fact that I either had to stand around idle whenever anyone was talking and be absolutely sure that no-one else was going to chime in (Thus also ruining the flow and pacing of the gameplay..); or otherwise have things just cut off constantly and miss out all the time. =(
A lot of other games or devteams like Naughty Dog time out the length of hallways and explorable areas/slow you to a walk etc. so that they fit snugly with a conversation that they have playing at any given time- not so much the case here and it really feels like it lacked this type of vetting during playtesting.
ID: hqetfulI had the same issue.
A lot of the game is walking in corridors listening to dialogue, which is developing the story, lore and characters so fair enough but not games do 1 of 2 things.
That dialogue is timed to fit within the length it takes players to go through that section.
Or they slow your speed down to make sure you don't miss it.
In this rhey slowed your speed down at time but you could still proceed to the next area and miss a big chunk of the conversation.
Another problem I found though is they repeat themselves a lot. I think there is such a focus on the guardians being this group who riff off each other so much that they made them speak constantly but didn't have enough general chatter for them so they just repeat themselves all the time.
ID: hqfklg7Yeah I definately heard repeat lines fairly frequently in combat also, which was a little dissapointing. I think I heard the same looping mini exchange of banter between party members about 3-4 times at its worst during some encounters. Especially in the more bullet spongey/shielded healer priest fights that just dragged on.
-
I think Peter quill says, "come on guys, we're supposed to be a team" way too much
-
It's more of a 8/10.
-
I forsee in 6-12 months time people are still going to be calling this a 'surprise'.
Like all the "hey guys you should really check out this little game called Ghost of Tsushima" posts.
ID: hqd2tjzHey have you heard of Bloodborne? Fun little game, I don't get why people don't talk about it.
ID: hqcs7wiFor me it is always hard to predict my enjoyment of these type of games as it sometimes seems like it is difficult to separate the fandom from the game itself. I have zero interest in marvel.... I've seen a few movies and they are fine, but comics and super heroes aren't my thing. To add to that the early previews were not super impressive IMHO.
....having said that, the reviews and discussion here have been really positive and seemed to transcend the rose tinted fandom effect. The game play is fun, the story is quite a ride, the characters and the banter is second to none. For what it is, this game is a stellar.

Kind of the same.
The only Marvel stuff I ever really liked is the Spider-man PS4 game and Netflix's Dardevil.
For DC there's like 1 animated movie and the Arkham games.
-
Rocket and quill are hilarious I enjoyed the comedy a lot
-
I'm excited for it to come to Game Pass, my guess is May-June. Looking forward to it!
-
Definitely not a 10, combat is not that great in my opinion, but a nice surprise game for sure
-
This was a super suprise for me as well and loved every second of it.
-
It's not, but it's pretty good.
-
Solid 8/10. Nothing more nothing less, but I was surprised it was that good.
-
This game is going to be the new Titanfall 2. A game that is pretty well loved, didn’t get a lot of hype and gets a Reddit thread every week or so talking about how great it is.
-
I mean, that’s dope you feel that way. I’d give it a 7 so far. I haven’t finished it yes so it could go up but I just don’t think I connect with the core gameplay or story that much to bring it to a 10.
It’s a fun game & maybe the biggest surprise of the year, but that’s because I had extremely low expectations for this one.
For what it’s worth, there’s only one game that I’d rate above an 8 this year and it’s a highly polarizing game on this sub for some reason (Deathloop) so opinions are always going to differ when it comes to this stuff.
-
This games feels like a 7/10 but people praise it a lot due to the expecations that it'd flop like the avenger's game. This game is nothing special outside narrative and dialogue, to be honest.
-
It's too bad the performance is inconsistent af
-
Really enjoyed it as well.
-
Been debating on getting this game. But how the combat looks is really holding me back. It looks boring just shooting things with peashooters and ordering the other guardians to do all the cool stuff. Unless I’m just looking at the wrong gameplay videos.
ID: hqe1r2iExactly the same here. I love myself a great single player story but the gameplay in GOTG looks so damn boring and repetitive that I can't bring myself to purchase it yet.
-
just bought the game on sale and im loving it so far

Exactly. For me, it achieves it's goal as a game perfectly. It does what it says on the tin. It was great from start to finish and changed my opinion on a series. The combat is just satisfying. And damn do I love those guns.
