Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves PS5 Tech Review: Graphics Upgrades + 30/60/120FPS Modes Tested
2 : Anonymous2022/01/26 15:14 ID: huaw1m7

TL;DR good PS5 port with several subtle enhancements on top of the bump to framerate/resolution

Fidelity mode: 4K30fps. Flawless framerate. John suspects that a 40fps mode in 4K could be feasable but it is not present

Performance mode: 1440p60fps. Flawless framerate

Performance Plus mode: 1080p120fps. Drops in a few areas where PS4 Pro also dropped frames. Most sequences do run without a hitch though and are super responsive. John recommends playing this mode.

There are graphical enhancements on PS5 compared to PS4 Pro:

higher LoDs resulting in less pop-in and more detail some textures seem improved contrast is higher

Loading is less than 3 seconds.

3D audio with headphones is impressive.

Dualsense implementation is a bit disappointing in isolation but going back to the PS4 version you notice the improvements to gun triggers and rumble that have been made for the Dualsense.

This part is pretty wild to me

"...the faster loading radically improves accessing gameplay from the chapter or encounter selection menus. In one instance, a load takes 48 seconds on PS4 Pro, reducing to 32 seconds when running the same content on PS5 under backwards compatibility. PS5 native? A mere 2.4 seconds."

ID: hub25rh

Truly one of the game changing features with the new consoles. The SSDs are just incredible

ID: hub3zff

My favorite part of the PS5 is the loss of loading screens. God I love it.

ID: hub2hdn

Some people are still sleeping on the difference the IO processor on PS5 makes compared to just putting an SSD in your PS4 Pro.

Based on the specs I think they can get loading times even quicker in future games once Naughty Dog have properly optimized everything for PS5.

I remember Insomniac saying that with Rift Apart they were bottlenecked by their own game engine when it came to utilizing PS5s loading speed.

John suspects that a 40fps mode in 4K could be feasable but it is not present

Please make it happen ND! Honestly this option in R&C Rift Apart was something I never knew I needed, but after using it I want every game to have it.

I was kinda disappointed Insomniac didn't update both Spider-Man games to have it and I really hope other studios implement this on their games, this and/or a 60fps option is honestly something that should be expected this gen.

ID: hubm4pt

It really does depend if there's enough headroom for a stable 40fps at 4k. I do think the Spiderman games can afford the extra 10fps though.

ID: hubdco7

Yeah Uncharted in 120fps will be fucking glorious. Can’t wait for Friday… though I need to buy an extra long HDMI cable to route it all…

ID: hublvr3

So performance mode is probably The middle ground?

I get my Playstation 5 on Saturday. Im playing Spidey first, but im still torn on what im playing next. Its either gonna be Uncharted, Last of Us or God of War. Everytime I think I made the decision, i get swayed by someone else.

ID: hub6cye

Play Astros Playroom first, comes installed on the PS5. Absolute must experience for the Dual sense controller.

ID: hub4ljk

Don't sleep on taking an hour or two for Astro's Playroom! Welcome to the PS5 club!

ID: hube1mj

Play this first honestly. It's a great intro game.

ID: hubbg2e

Or like 10 hours

ID: hubcnpb

All of those games are fantastic. I actually recommend playing through Astro's Playroom first. Next, jump into Spider-Man. God of War, TLOU Remastered, and Uncharted 4 are all free in the PS Plus Collection if you have PS Plus.

If you liked TLOU, then the next few games you could get could be TLOU2, Horizon Zero Dawn, and Ghost of Tushima.

ID: hubrq4u

The answer is Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart.

ID: hub4box

Make sure to grab Deep Rock Galactic while it's free this month. It's a ton of fun.

Miles Morales is fantastic. So is Guardians of the Galaxy. And It Takes Two is a masterpiece. My fiancee who doesn't play games absolutely adored it.

And if you haven't played Ghost of Tsushima then put that on your list. It's maybe the most gorgeous game ever made.

Have fun!

ID: hubh30z

Astros playroom is a nice way to jump into owning a ps5 for the day you get it. From there, you could play any of those games. I think you should play the last of us (first one) before Uncharted 4, otherwise it'll feel like a step backwards in game design

ID: hub4mz7

I’d do last of us and god of war first personally as those are still PS4 good games. Save the more upgraded stuff for last

ID: hub5php

I'm doing whatever a spider can first. Hes my favorite superhero.

ID: hubou7u

Do you mean Last Of Us 1? If so, i recommend starting with that. Since it’s the oldest you’re likely to enjoy it the most if you play it first. Still a beautiful game with fantastic gameplay. But after the craziness of God Of War and The Last Of Us 2 it might be difficult for you to go back.

4 : Anonymous2022/01/26 16:44 ID: hubanfx

Man I was totally uninterested in getting this but after learning that £10 get's me the upgraded version of U4 and The lost Legacy, and me finishing my main games before Horizon and Elden Ring hit, it's like the perfect storm. Really looing forward to a replay.

5 : Anonymous2022/01/26 15:14 ID: huaw5ud

Can't wait to replay it on Friday!

6 : Anonymous2022/01/26 18:19 ID: hubqriy

I own the game digitally, literally bought it when it came out. Can play it on my PS5 and everything but it still shows full price on the PS store. I am confused, do people already see the $10 price tag for the upgrade path?

ID: hubqzrh

Wait for it to release on Friday

7 : Anonymous2022/01/26 16:00 ID: hub3g0z

Not the most significant upgrade we’ve gotten, but I like what I’m seeing. The change in contrast is really good looking.

ID: hub5fp9

The change in contrast is really good looking.

That is probably my favorite part of this upgrade somehow. It's small, but so long as it's not straight up crushing blacks, it definitely adds some very nice pop to things.

8 : Anonymous2022/01/26 15:34 ID: huaz6p4

Any word on additional options? Would love a hud off/reticle on option like in TLOU2.

ID: hub4eu0

I love stuff like that. On one run of TLoU II I put it on easy and took off all hud elements, and it feels like you’re playing an action movie.

ID: hub4x5k

I'd guess that most of these sorts of ports are done by smaller teams without a lot of 'systems' people involved.

9 : Anonymous2022/01/26 15:43 ID: hub0l38

I like to look at the Uncharted Remastered Collection as a look into what Uncharted could be on the PS5 with it's features, but this doesn't mean a 5th (or 6th, or 7th) installment is likely, but could always happen. At least it's going to PC as an added bonus. But I am curious what Naughty Dog is working on now. I fool around with the idea of them working on a sci fi based game, which would be very different compared to their previous games.

ID: hub4lew

i am pretty sure at some point in the next decade we will get a Lost Legacy 2 or something.

ID: hub6qmo

Eh maybe. Or a remaster of Golden Abyss. Bluepoint's original plan was to remaster that, but they ended up remastering the original PS3 trilogy. On top of that, GA was done by Bend. Regardless, Naughty Dog is working on more projects than they did on the PS4. I'm assuming this includes their New IP, the multiplayer project, Last of Us tv show and Uncharted film, a possible Jak and Daxter revival, and the rumored Last of Us remake (do we really need this. You can already play it on the PS5 via the PS4 remaster, and the game hasn't aged like Demon's Souls did).

10 : Anonymous2022/01/26 21:17 ID: huckukq

I've played Uncharted 4 to death and I'm JACKED. One of my favourite games of all time!

11 : Anonymous2022/01/26 15:15 ID: huaw9i5

guess i’ll once again be constantly switching between all three every few minutes just to see the difference the entire time. i can’t help myself when i have the options.

12 : Anonymous2022/01/26 16:47 ID: hubb5mi

The Nathan Drake Collection really needs a resolution upgrade. I don't want another remaster of those just 4k resolution or close on the existing PS4 version. It would make the complete package. Also it's dumb to offer the forth installment of a saga on PC but not the previous 3.

Edit: more thoughts on this. I know it's an old project and that could difficult things but now with Bluepoint being part of ps studios they could make a PS5 upgrade and a PC port of the collection if they wanted right?

ID: hubc1i6

Bruh I want The Nathan Drake Collection at 4K 120fps so badly, they'd look so good at that high res and frames

13 : Anonymous2022/01/26 16:34 ID: hub8zek

Love Digital Foundry and I enjoy John's analysis of games. Glad to see this one looks good at 60fps, can't wait to get the upgrade!

14 : Anonymous2022/01/26 16:46 ID: hubaykw

Looks solid, though I wish I didn’t have hang on to the old version to continue playing the multiplayer!

ID: hubgzg0

If you have PS+ you can download the multiplayer part of the collection

15 : Anonymous2022/01/26 16:47 ID: hubb505

Nice

16 : Anonymous2022/01/26 16:55 ID: hubcjl0

1440p60 is the sweet spot. 1080p is too a high a price to pay for 120 fps.

17 : Anonymous2022/01/26 18:17 ID: hubqica

From all the people complaining about the lack of 4K/60 i really wonder if i'm the only one who needs 4x zoom to tell the difference between resolutions

18 : Anonymous2022/01/26 16:06 ID: hub4cos

I really find it hard to believe that they couldn't get this running at 4k/60fps. And obviously the 120fps mode indicates there's massive CPU headroom to do so.

So John talks about 4k/40fps, but seriously, 4k/60fps should have been on the table here and I think this would have actually been the best option for the average PS5 user, as most people dont have 120hz displays and 1440p, while not bad looking, is still not as super crisp as 4k.

At the *very* least, if somehow 4k/60fps was just a tad too much, something like 1800p/60fps could have done. Their insistence on going all the way down to 1440p is just bizarre, especially when Playstation doesn't even support that resolution natively.

ID: hubw4gv

It has a few drops in 1440p 60fps, so obviously it would drop way more in 4k 60fps.

ID: hub7h5r

1440p, while not bad looking, is still not as super crisp as 4k.

Unless you're playing an Insomniac game where the wizards somehow make the difference practically non-existent.

ID: hub9e70

I definitely noticed a difference between native 4K and the performance mode on Spider-Man. I stuck with RT performance, however, because 30fps felt way too sluggish in that game.

ID: hub78hc

It renders at 1440p and upscales it to 4k. So you get 4k output. How does PS supporting 1440p even matter? Also, you don't seem to realize how difficult it is for a GPU to maintain 4K at 60fps especially in recent games. Only a handful of GPUs that cost more than the PS4 can do that. I don't know why you thought PlayStation would give you a NASA computer for $500.

ID: hubbrdf

4K60fps on next gen consoles is not as uncommon as you think

ID: hub683f

I was really hoping for 4K/60fps, I’ll prob play on 1440/60fps
