surprisingly this was my most played game last year (50hours out of 357) but personally I stopped playing for the same reason I stopped playing Fortnite.

It’s a fun ass game with a cool twist on the traditional shooter genre but the skill gap can be absolutely brutal and can turn the game into a sweat fest.

100% would recommend this game. Its fluid, fun and straight to the shooting. No loadout bullshit nor killstreaks/ults. You get guns in the map ala quake.

How crucial is it to get good at the portal mechanic? I didn't enjoy the portal tutorial and never started up a real game.

You play against bots for the most part until level 10 so it's not necessary at first but once you're playing against real people it helps to know how to use them. Much like any other shooter with weird mechanics (like Fortnite, only good example I can think of) if you're good at building, or portals in this case, you'll at least have the upper hand against a player that doesn't use them.

Well, the tutorial only works for you to know which button opens and closes a portal and shows you the possibilities but the real fun its directly ingame, once you are fighting and begin getting comfortable opening/closing portals to your advantage the game becomes so much fun. It plays so natural and fast

Not crucial at all at the begining, because you'll be mostly playing with newcomers like you. All you need to do is shoot.
