Hermen Hulst talks Bungie, what’s next for PlayStation Studios
2 : Anonymous2022/02/02 19:01 ID: hvb9rah

This interview was made for the investors, not the players.

Which is fine. That's a CEOs job. It's only getting hate here cause it was posted here

ID: hvc49b1

Yeah, people forget that. As much as they are trying to sell a product to their customers etc. They are still just business men at the end of the day trying to do their job……to make money.

3 : Anonymous2022/02/02 17:21 ID: hvatgvp

Hoping for a Socom live service epic suite of things, but lets get some resistance back.

ID: hvcak1w

Both, please.

4 : Anonymous2022/02/02 17:08 ID: hvarera

Well that was a whole lot of nothing lol

Was basically: Bungie made Halo! Halo was good! Bungie also made Destiny! Live service games are hard to make. Here’s a couple games coming out in a few months you already knew about!

ID: hvc8ppw

Yeah but today’s Bungie is not the same company anymore.

ID: hvcdfml

If you go on MobyGames a decent amount of the Halo 3 team shipped Destiny 2.

5 : Anonymous2022/02/02 19:26 ID: hvbdvsx

Don't bother reading this lol, nothing substantial here

6 : Anonymous2022/02/02 17:16 ID: hvasm6w

They really didn't answer the "What's next for Playstation Studios"

I almost expected to hear something like, "We are still searching to collaborate with like-minded individuals/entities to bring gaming into a new era," but nothing, lol.

7 : Anonymous2022/02/02 18:53 ID: hvb8gxh

What a shit interview and answers lmao

8 : Anonymous2022/02/02 21:29 ID: hvbxpan

Oh god the Craftsman is going to send me to the Weather Station again to pick up more high performance underwear.

I hope at least some of the stuff Bungie makes will be exclusive to Playstation, otherwise what is the point?

ID: hvbqazq

The point of this purchase was outlined by Jim Ryan in his interview earlier this week with gamesindustry.biz

PlayStation is about to go hard into the realm of live service and they don’t know how to do it. They need someone with experience making good, multi-platform games (Jim Ryan specifically said that Sony is now moving beyond from their console heartland).

Sony can try and do their best with the teams they currently have (teams that have never made a live service game before) and make all the mistakes. After shipping a few Anthem’s, they can then get the foundations of these games right and ship a Warzone/Fornite/Destiny quality game.

Or, Sony can can buy Bungie and just absorb all that knowledge, technology, and experience right away. That way they save themselves a bunch of mistakes and can maintain their brand image of high quality, industry leading games. This purchase allows them to ensure their first live service game is actually good, and avoid embarrassing themselves and letting players down with bad live-service games.

It’s not a waist at all if Bungie never ships a single PlayStation exclusive game.

otherwise what is the point?

Money

I have a feeling it won't.

IMHO, Sony bought Bungie for one big reason: live service. Destiny is first and foremost a live service FPS MMO-like game. It hasn't been easy, nor has it been perfect. But it is incredibly fun to play and has managed to pass the test of time so far.

Sony already has strong SP games and developers. I wouldn't expect them to lean on Bungie for any of that. So, with the plan for Destiny 2 laid out for a few more years at the least, the question is what's coming, and I'd expect more of the same in that I expect it will also be some MP and most likely another live service game--and I wouldn't be surprised if some aspect of it allowed for eSports.

The key to a live-service game is players, and lots of them. You can't ignore the other platforms and expect to get the critical mass required. Given Sony's higher emphasis on PCs, I think that's a given--and from launch, not later. But likewise, XB is still a good fraction of their playerbase, and I see no reason they wouldn't include them.

The only platform I see that might be out-of-luck is Stadia.

I don't understand why people would want anything exclusive. What's the point apart from hanging it over the other plastic box guy's heads?

This either going to suck or be decent. Live service games tend to leave a sour taste on everyones mouth. They can also ruin people’s perception of a franchise. Look how fallout 76 turn out for bethesda. Nothing more tarnished their reputation than that desperate cash grab of a live service. Bungie are also one of the shadiest when it comes to the monetization of their content and sony seems to want to follow their steps.

Edit: downvote all you want, but just a handful of live services have a good rep.

This is about Sony buying Bungie

ID: hvaw1w5

My comment is about playstation getting into live services. Sony bought bungie to be able to make more live services.

11 : Anonymous2022/02/02 19:07 ID: hvbaq99

What’s next is a big push for PC and cloud/mobile all tied with subscription services. Jim Ryan has spoken about this. The future has never looked brighter

ID: hvbd5f7

Sony is also now focusing on their gaming division so its all coming really soon

ID: hvbemy2

Yes, that’s what my comment implied

This acquisition feels more like they've brought a 3.6 billions lottery ticket instead actually buying something concrete.

ID: hvaxgab

I think you have to look at Sony acquisitions differently now. Sony are trying hard to push game franchises in to movies and TV shows which they can also make money out of.

Destiny not only makes them about 400 million in revenue each year but has the potential to be a good movie or TV show with all of its lore.

It is also an extremely well performing live service game, something Sony can learn from and has great shooting mechanics.

ID: hvav8a2

Destiny is a massive IP and one of the most played and top earning games on Playstation every year.

ID: hvavjb4

Destiny was the 6th most played PS5 game in the first year. It generates over 400m in revenue each year. That's some lottery ticket.

ID: hvbm67a

According to this is about 150m yearly.

Regardless, even if it were true. Considering it cost a whopping 3.6b to acquire them that's still peanuts and a terrible roi on its own. They didn't brought them just because of that.

They're interested in:

Bungie providing tech and experience to SIE's future live services games. Most likely development assistance too, especially if said live service games are to be fps. In such a competitive market it's great to have. But still, any new IP in that crowded and fickle market is a gamble; just with better odds now

Bringing Destiny and future Bungie IP to TV or Cinema, a gamble.

New IP and Future products in the Destiny franchise from Bungie to continue being profitable is just the baseline.

In a situation where Microsoft just basically ate most of the fps market (and then some) most successful IP/developers. Sony goes ahead and buys a legendary fps studio, which claims to fame are owned by it's main competition, along with its only relevant successful IP they own of questionable stature for 3.6b only to have them release a blog post on just how little is going to change things for them.

No Bungie current or future PS exclusive games.

Bungie will still self publish their games. Maybe they'll sign a contract with Microsoft to get their next game on Gamepass day one and make PS, users pay 70 wouldn't that be funny.

This, imo, is an outstanding deal for Bungie and a hail mary for Sony.

ID: hvbbrgn

Just goes to show the huge demand for FPS and multiplayer. Odd Sony is just now understanding this

ID: hvb6y9l

I think it’s way more to it than that. Sony has been wanting to get into the FPS market for a minute and have been bringing studios on to work on that. Though Destiny may have a lot of flaws, the gun mechanics and gameplay are great.

Sony is looking at this with the idea that Bungie has 800+ employees and growing and they can bring those people on within every project from other studios. Plus there’s a huge factor that Bungie might have a good amount of stuff those employees are developing and Sony can bring it to light through their PlayStation Studios ecosystem.

We’ll obviously see in the future but imo this move was made with the idea of a lot of things being concrete and them seeing Bungie becoming even worth more down the line and Sony having first dibs if they become an even bigger publisher than now.

Edit: My bad. 900+ employees now

ID: hvb9wr2

Sony bought the studio not for their IP but for their quality in making fps shooters with good gameplay. And now live service.
