The Boat in Resident Evil 7 is nowhere near as bad as people make it out to be.

Everytime someone talks about RE7, they say that the game becomes shitty after leaving the house. And... i just don't see it?

Because of all people saying this, i was expecting to hate the last part of RE7. And... i thought it was one of the best parts of the game.

Okay, the first part of the boat, with all the flashbacks and scripted stuff is insanely boring and sucks balls. But after you get past the tape...

I think the Boat becomes the best part of the game. You are unarmed, you feel helpless, the atmosphere is unmatched, and you're surrounded by Molded everywhere. Even when you get a gun, it's a shitty gun with like 5 bullets, so you still feel totally helpless.

Only after you figure out how to get the Machine Gun, you start to feel like you have some agency again.

The sound design is godlike. With every step, you can feel the sound of the rust and mold tearing down the metal of the ship. The wind, the creaking, the sound of the Molded crawling through the vents... horror usually doesn't scare me much but this part with headphones... it legitimately made me fear for my life.

Not to mention, those two Crawling Molded that patrol one of the floors... and they can seemingly despawn and respawn at random... they gave me quite a couple of heart attacks.

It also features my favorite music track in the game "Determination".

Even the Mines i didn't mind. It felt really cathartic to unload all of my ammo and take revenge on the Molded. The final gauntlet with the two fat Molded was fun as heck! And tough to boot!

The only part that sucked was the final boss (and even then i didn't mind to have an easy fight since the Two Fat Molded made me rage a lot earlier). The Boat and the Mines were really good for me.

For me, the big issues with it are:

everything just looks grey and uninteresting. It's not an exciting area to explore.
All of the items and equipment that you've collected thusfar in the game have been taken from you. Some might like that this amps up your vulnerability again, but I thought it was obnoxious. the size of the area feels really big compared to the amount that you actually have to do in it. Lots of empty rooms and multiple floors that imo only serve to get you lost. As you say, you're also hunted pretty aggressively during this period, but by enemies that aren't as fun to cat-and-mouse as the Bakers were.
this one is more about my personal preference, but the Mia/Eveline piece of the story is way less engaging than the portion where you're roaming the Bakers' plantation and thinking that they are the villains. So being on the tanker already feels like the game's best story and scares are behind it. The molded are more annoying than creepy, at least for me.

By far the biggest problem with ship is that you have to do it twice in a row

They should have let you skip the tape after 1st playthrough. You can skip every other tape, why not this one?!

This! It should be skippable. Beside this I agree with you that ship is an interesting area and a cool level

i love it on madhouse difficulty. its a fun change in pace before the balls to the walls guns blazing finale of the game once you switch back to ethan.

I 100% agree with you. The atmosphere is great, the vulnerability is great. Finally connecting everything was great. I don’t understand why people complain about this part. I feel like they’ll never be satisfied with anything capcom does and it’s the reason they keep going to the drawing board and then fuck up trying to please everybody. It’s a masterpiece and I hope CAPCOM(now that they know how to use their new engine) can make something like it again down the road.

I really like it too. By the final fight with Jack you're basically a commando with a ton of firepower and the fear is gone. The ship strips everything away and makes the game scary again.

And I actually like that you do the ship twice as different pathways are open and closed in each so you have to remember how to get around.

The part where you go through the boat and it’s trying to be scary is fantastic.

The part where you go through the boat and it’s trying to be an action shooter is not. The combat just isn’t very good… maybe if it had RE2make’s combat or (better yet) F.E.A.R.‘s it would have worked. Really Capcom should just copy-paste the mechanics from F.E.A.R. for the inevitable action shooter segments in every RE game.

I kept waiting for it to be revealed as the Ouroboros Ship from RE 5 and finally connect to the games.

I agree. People do blow it way out of proportion (it's the internet after all).

I think there's really two problems with it tht I think make it hurt the game overall.

1.) The area is boring to look at. It's all pretty plain looking and there's not much variety in the area. It is spooky the first time through, but it is really is drab on susequent playthroughs

2.) It kind of kills the pacing. The whole progression arc of RE7 is perfect. You start off so weak and steadily build more and more power as the threats escalate. Then you hit the boat and it feels like the game starts over. I think the developers did this to ramp tension up, which kind of works, but again, really only on your first playthrough. It's just always such a relief to get back to being Ethan.

It's just like that moment in Metroid prime where you lose all your powers, except here, it happens two thirds of the way through the game, so it can feel pretty frustrating.

So I do agree that people go after the section way too hard, but I think it is overall a detriment to the game.

The mines were truly underrated for me. Its honestly one of my favorite part of a Resident Evil game, where you look at all your weapons and ammo and go "alright I'm just gonna blow the shit outta everything I see from here on out." Its a super empowering moment. Its not what makes Resident Evil (since its less scary) but its this nice cherry on the top. Especially in this case because you just started being Ethan again, and you have that bit where you get to pull out all your weapons from supply.

When I play a non-RE horror game like Outlast, I usually get disappointed when the endgame stuff is still me running away from a monster, maybe a different monster. One of my favorite parts about RE is the escalation, and that includes when it becomes a dumb action movie by the end.

I like the boat section too

To me, it’s the one standout part of the game that truly feels like the older Resident Evil games (with the maneuvering the elevator and constant up and down travelling you’ve got to do!). It’s so close to the ending that I think people feel underwhelmed by then since the next sequence after is the Ethan/House/Chris ending

No, i enjoyed every single second of it, beginning till the end!

My first playthrough was with Madhouse difficulty, i can not described how much excited, terrified and enjoyed i am while playing it.

I wouldn't say its the best and its a downgrade from the Baker House but its not bad. I like learning the mystery behind everything, I liked playing as Mia and the environment was interesting. But it can be confusing layout wise and starting with nothing is a pain. Now the salt mine... yeah I'm not defending that.

15 : Anonymous2022/02/03 23:50 ID: hvhphea

Never had a problem with it

16 : Anonymous2022/02/03 22:29 ID: hvhdeoy

Thank you. I've been saying this since 2017. The boat is good ole survival horror, and the mine is the section where Ethan finally gets to let loose on those Molded bastards. The mine also has one of the best tracks in the game. "Ascending from the Darkness"

Edit: Also, since the DLC, I don't count Eveline as the final boss anymore. The true final boss is in End of Zoe and it's such a badass fight.
