Destiny 2 The Witch Queen review in progress: "The best story Bungie has ever told"

Do you need to have played Destiny 2 previously to use this (levelled up to requisite stats, completed other story aspects) or can you just jump straight in with The Witch Queen?

ID: hymop8c

Well, in terms of levelling, everyone starts at the same point so you won't lose out there.

I'm terms of story, you'll follow it but there's a lot of stuff that'll leave you going "Huh..?" unless you watch a load of Byf videos to bring yourself up to speed.

ID: hyn2rxr

Personally if you know about the Taken King expansion and some small other parts you'll be fine for the most part.

ID: hynecas

This is the major reason why I just can't get into Destiny.

I tried it a few months ago and liked the gunplay but the story was immensly confusing. I then learned that the main campaign of the game has been removed and there is only the DLC left. Super irritating in my opinion. Nothing made sense to me so I gave up on the game.

TL;DR if you're coming in fresh 10/15 minutes of primer on YouTube should be good.

Ironically, the amount of destiny 2 you've played is not going to always increase how much you would enjoy which queen.

In terms of stats, everybody gets bumped up to the starting item level automatically, and you can play through the witch queen with starting gear.

If you haven't played Destiny 2 at all you'll need a bit of a primer on the Hive and the Taken, who Oryx was, and generally how the "Light" (Destiny's magic system) is set up. But like all pretty general, high level primers. One issue you may run into is a little bit of anachronism if you queue into the random dungeon playlist. They still use their original voiceovers, so like if you get Exodus Crash as a random dungeon you'll be talking to two characters who just aren't in the story anymore. But that's not really part of the story, just some random activities to play.

However, if you have played Destiny 2 specifically either the Forsaken expansion or the first half or so of Shadowkeep, you will be very confused. "Why the fuck is Uldren Sov A) not dead B) acting like we're friends. Why the fuck isn't Mara Sov dead. Who is Caialt and why are we not shooting at eachother?

ID: hymve98

I'd never played D2 before WQ and I have no issues with story. The guns in this game are fantastic, and there are hoards of enemies to kill and the public events are a lot of fun.. TBH, this is the most fun I've had with a game in years.

ID: hymxqz1

I stopped playing when the Europa expansion came out, but I still miss the gunplay. Ironically for a gun focused game, bows and swords were my fave.

I tried a few months back to get into Destiny 2. As a dad, I just can’t justify the grind. Too much wandering around and not enough fun. And the learning curve for everything is SO STEEP!

ID: hynhla2

I played the vanilla Destiny 2 when it came out on PS5 because it was free and "ooooh, shiny". And yeah, you're too right.

The shooting is great, but everything else in the game is oh-so-boring. And slow. And non-engagging.

Even as F2P I still feel robbed of the few hours I spent playing it. One friend says "oh it gets good after 100 hours or so!"... yeah, no thanks.

ID: hyni5lr

Exactly. I’m sure it pays off when you really dedicate your life to it, but the older I get, the more I want to dedicate my life to better things. Destiny 1 was better, but still grindy.

ID: hyoa9gb

Which is funny because before Destiny 1 came out bungie said their main goal with the game was to make it people who had 1 hour a week to play could still jump in and understand what’s going on. It became the exact opposite of a game, where you’re either a hardcore player or not

ID: hyozfk3

Having done the grind several times over the years and releases, the REALLY fun part is when you realize all your progress has just been wiped.

Bungie is really, really, really bad at horizontal, long term progression. It's the WoW model, and if you're not interested in grinding to grind and having it wiped away? Find something else to play.

4 : Anonymous2022/02/27 05:24 ID: hylyxti

still doesnt seem new player friendly

ID: hymbh7t

It really isn't. The intro campaign for new players is ridiculously short and the tutorial mission is pretty much just copy pasted from Destiny 1. Combined with the fact that the main campaign of the original game and the first major expansion + the minor expansions have both been removed from the game.

ID: hymf65q

Them removing red war for that shitty new light experience is awful. Red wars pacing was good that you could get all your subclasses and learn them individually instead of all at once, watch your power increase at a steady point while playing it, and learning mechanics you’ll see within other activities. The story may not have been good then but at least it let you learn the game at your own pace without overwhelming you. There’s a lot that the game doesn’t tell you either.

ID: hyn7l11

The Red War campaign was an absolutely terrible introduction to the game. It was actually a barrier between the player and getting into the action.

ID: hynxhjl

I agree, there is still work for Bungie to do on that front. If you are interested in getting into the game, I recommend teaming up with a veteran player to help show you the ropes. I am not the best player, but I've been around since the beginning, and I'm always happy to help out new players.

My Bungie name is DrugOfGods#2463, anyone interested can feel free to add me.

ID: hym0t3c

It isn't, but at least they added a recap of sorts.

ID: hyminm9

Ganeplay wise it is. Story wise it's going to be near impossible to catch someone up, at least for the next 2-3 years.

ID: hyngvoo

Also kinda scummy to not include the season pass with the expansion.

5 : Anonymous2022/02/27 16:20 ID: hynqaoy

Very true. Just beat campaign yesterday on my main and going to work on legendary on my titan now.

6 : Anonymous2022/02/27 17:24 ID: hynzzle

Destiny 1 and 2 are super fun, but man, if you ever ‘get out’ of it for a few months or more and try to hop back in it’s just not fun at all

ID: hyo4vt4

I’m the opposite, play for a month or two take a break then come back and have fun for another month or so.

7 : Anonymous2022/02/27 05:57 ID: hym29s2

This isn’t saying a lot as the bar isn’t very high. However, I would be lying if I said the campaign wasn’t amazing. It’s actually great.

ID: hym6nk8

The halo campaigns were great. Calling this better than that is high praise.

ID: hym6x0g

I skipped over the title, I was mainly talking about only Destiny campaigns and forgot about Halo.

8 : Anonymous2022/02/27 06:29 ID: hym59we

I feel like every 2nd destiny expansion is praised as the best the game has ever been. Then a month after release you hear nothing but how bad the game is

ID: hynl60j

You usually find people who are upset about things the most vocal online. Its rarely a true reflection of the average persons opinions.

ID: hymayvq

On Reddit yes, Reddit likes to bash D2. Most of them have over 200 hrs speedrunning everything and midmaxing and then they proceed to cry that it has no content later on, tragic really

ID: hymnx7o

Reddit hates every game

seems like you want it to be

just check the feedback on twitter and reddit.
All Destiny fans are pleased with the story and campaign...
So this comment makes no sense.
You dont believe gamesradar? fine
Then check other sites or peoples feedback...

10 : Anonymous2022/02/27 15:21 ID: hynhmks

Grinding for story content. Mmm, nah I’m good.

11 : Anonymous2022/02/27 04:44 ID: hyluhxe

Is that saying a lot though?

ID: hym48pw

Idk I thought that their story and world building were their strong points. Especially when it came to the last Destiny 1 expansion, base Destiny 2 and Forsaken

ID: hylz94z

Halo 1 enters the chat.

12 : Anonymous2022/02/27 11:53 ID: hymv4z7

Good to hear,

did they fix the rest of the game though?

ID: hyot5l0

I guess that would depend on which parts of the game you believe need/needed fixing.

ID: hyov3ac

gunplay and movement has always been fantastic, last i played the pvp weapon balance was as good as it'd ever been as well, and it looks like the MSQ of witch queen is good too

but just off the top of my head you've got stuff like the ingame economy being atrocious, and somehow never improved, The armour system just being so stupid you are reliant on third party apps to make it tolerable. (affinity changes are nice but its just lipstick on a pig)/ mods either being broken or ineffective/ so many subclasses were inherently useless/ crucible maps/ new player experience/vault space etc

the list could easily continue if anyone were to spend more than 2 minutes spitballing super basic stuff that everybody interacts with that is inherently terrible

13 : Anonymous2022/02/27 18:25 ID: hyo9o0u

Anyone know of a solid video to breakdown the story of destiny to this point? I think I’m ready to finally jump in, I just wanna know what happened prior to this.

ID: hyotl46

It’s not a video, but I wrote up a summary of all Destiny 2 for a website recently and it’s gotten good feedback. They’re updating it soon with my D1 stuff as well but I can send you summaries of those too

ID: hyp2sho

For this expansion:

For everything before the year 2020:

14 : Anonymous2022/02/27 22:50 ID: hypdbku

I have zero interest in Destiny's endless hamster wheel any longer. Especially after they eliminated content I paid full price for.

15 : Anonymous2022/02/27 23:31 ID: hypj3yp

Used to love destiny and play every exp when they came out, the fact that they removed stuff that I paid for, especially raids that I would like to run with some of my friends that never played the game make it hard to recommend.

ID: hypj54t

that I paid for, especially

FTFY.

Although payed exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in:

Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. The deck is yet to be payed.

Payed out when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. The rope is payed out! You can pull now.

Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment.

Beep, boop, I'm a bot

16 : Anonymous2022/02/27 15:11 ID: hyng8kc

That is not a high bar, Bungie has never told a good story lol. Maybe ODST.

ID: hynosvb

Is this a joke lol? Reach is still a masterpiece. I can't think of any other game that starts you off knowing you and all your squad are about to die but still managing to deliver shocks and emotional punches. It takes a genius of a storyteller to be able to achieve that.

18 : Anonymous2022/02/27 19:20 ID: hyoi3qb

Coukd be thr best ever and I wouldn’t play it. I dont like having content inpay for blocked down the road when they want to sell more dlc.

Its a rip off

19 : Anonymous2022/02/27 18:03 ID: hyo6950

Not saying much.

20 : Anonymous2022/02/27 19:27 ID: hyoj8fu

Destiny’s lore and story is about as cryptic as Fromsoft games. I’m very skeptical that they put together a coherent story.
