- OP on mentions Last of Us Part 2 winning a Japanese award in a thread about Ghost of Tsushima. Fans are pitted against each other in a honor-less brawl
-
how did two completely different games get pitted against each other?
ID: gq5rx2aID: gq5rzugTLOU2 was controversial for having a women kill one of the beloved characters in a pathetic way (despite it fitting with the game world), and Ghosts of Tsushima, a game based of some old Japanese stuff, came out around the same time.
So now you have the people influenced by Gamergate saying that GoT is the last bastion of gaming entertainment not tainted by the SJW's because a woman killed their fictional father figure. Hence the 2 communities started fighting each other.
E: since my explanation is only one of the reasons, albeit a big one, this guy provides a very good explanation too.
ID: gq63eygThere's this weird gamer subculture around Sony's first-party games (in particular, their big blockbuster mainstream games) that demands that they be viewed as these prestigious masterpieces (despite many of them being just marginally different from typical third-party AAA games). And these Sony fans are very defensive of them, too, as evidenced by some of their reactions when Horizon: Zero Dawn got announced for PC, or when Days Gone got less-than-stellar reviews.
So what does this have to do with The Last of Us Part 2? Well, prior to last year, Naughty Dog was viewed as the darling of Sony's first-party studios, being one of those developers that can supposedly do no wrong, like CD Projekt Red (before Cyberpunk 2077) and Fromsoft. Then the game's story got leaked, which led to a huge backlash. Without going into any major spoiler territory, the game's story does not pull its punches. It's a very dark story set in a world that often brings out the worst of people, which doesn't bode well for some people's favorite characters. And it also had LGBTQ characters in prominent roles. And so you had a huge outcry from gamers who were just regular homophobes, more rage from people who hate the direction of the story based on the leaks, Youtubers who were feeding the controversy for clicks, and backlash from people who thought that Naughty Dog was overrated in the first place. There were also some who played the game and just did not like the story for fair reasons, and others who criticized Naughty Dog for their crunch culture.
And so TLOU2's reputation was "stained", gamers turned to Ghost of Tsushima (which came out a month later) to uphold as their Sony Masterpiece™. And unlike Last of Us Part 2, Ghost of Tsushima played it very safe in nearly every aspect. Critics generally liked it, but didn't love it as much as TLOU 2. A few also pointed out that GoT took many liberties with its history, as it was full of anachronisms (such as katana being used during a time before they had been invented). Somehow, all of that got twisted into "game journalists HATE Ghost of Tsushima because of cultural appropriation!" And so, this all translated into some weird culture war that can ultimately be summed up as just another dril tweet.
ID: gq5wid4Because if I can't argue that Sega is better than Nintendo, then what's the point of video games?
ID: gq64u72You got people who hate TLOU2 for the usual reasons, but then you got people who are convinced that liking Ghosts of Tsushima more than it is a sign of you being a chud or something. People really gotta log off.
ID: gq760roBoth games were Game of the Year candidates and Ghost of Tsushima won. This upset the TLOU2 fans a ton and now there is eternal hatred between the two fandoms.
The worst thing is that while both games are fine, they are nothing remarkable. TLOU2 has the rehashed gameplay of stealth action and ghost of tsushima has the exact same gameplay except with samurais and swords.
The only people losing out are the normal gamers who want unique and interesting games and not the same mechanics that we enjoyed 10 years ago in Assassin's Creed.

TLOU2 is one of my favorite games, but I also love Ghost. So I'm gonna go le enlightened centrist here and ask that pretty please, can we stop with this stupid fucking war between the two games? I'd really appreciate it thank you.
ID: gq6c7koyou must choose
its the gamer way
ID: gq6wjtdWhat makes a man turn neutral? Lust for gold? Power? Or were you just born with a heart full of neutrality?
ID: gq6u6jwBut you kinda have to go looking for it to even run into this crap. I loved GoT and was on the sub back at release. I didn't know this "war" between it and TLOU2 even existed until now. I barely remember it being mentioned on that sub, unless you sort by controversial.

good for the last of us 2

Here is a capture of the thread.
Unfortunately it looks like one of the comment threads already had half its comments deleted.

Can someone enlighten me why Ghost is the highest rated ps4 game off all time by userscore? Its literally far cry or assasins creed set in Japan. It does nothing new or innovative.
All you do is run around, talk to nameless strangers and kill people. And that is the only one type of quest.
Everything about that game has been done a million times and not one thing is new about it. I only got back into gaming because of the pandemic but its like fuckinh Far Cry 3. Do gamers only have a boner for it because you can play as a samurai?
ID: gq6zbroIt's because of the TLoU2 stuff. Outraged gamers that left a 0 on TLoU2 then left a 10 on Ghost of Tsushima (which got released at about the same time), since they have it propped up to be the "anti-SJW" game while TLoU2 "got ruined by the SJWs and Cuckmann".
ID: gq76160Honestly the same can be said for TLoU, both 1 and 2. As far as gameplay goes they are utterly generic and while the stories are fine, it's nothing we haven't seen done many times before. Go outside the medium of games and there's plenty of literary and cinematic works that have done it's own story MUCH better yet the fans still hail it as the greatest thing since sliced bread.

More people rated it higher than other games.
but its like fuckinh Far Cry 3
Wait, so you're confused at its success but in the same post compare it to one of the most successful games of all time?

Every time a game is wielded as a weapon against another it completely kills all my interest in said game 😛 It's a shame too, because GoT looks right up my alley, but I have no interest to play it anymore and there's many games on the horizon I'd much rather play.
ID: gq6zmadI was the same. Any interest in GoT got stifled by gamers who use it as a counter-example to TLoU2. It's the same with the movie Alita which they used in the same way when Captain Marvel came out.
But eventually I got it anyway, and it's pretty good. It's not mindboggling, but it's essentially Assassins Creed: Japan, and I enjoy AC's gameplay, even if it's basically the same every game. Also it's really pretty.
ID: gq6i56gagreed, I kind of have a similar problem. People love to claim that "the fans ruined it" is a dumb reasoning to not like/not have interest in something. Hell I myself used to be part of that crowd until I actually had a game ruined for me by the fans lol
ID: gq6vxviI believe that a considerable amount of people on both sides of this culture war front haven't really played either of the games, at best they've watched a playthrough on youtube. Just my personal opinion of course, right out of my ass. I don't think there is any reason to let these people choose for you what games you play
ID: gq6svn2Like Horizon
ID: gq6qtbjI mean I don’t see why that should push you away from the game. Just play it and stay away from certain communities. It’s a great game, the “war” between the two games is completely contrived by haters

More Gamers crying over TLOU2 making me want it more. It's some great advertising. Oh, so these people who act like complete children and bigots don't like the game? It must be doing something right.
If it ever hits the PC I'm on it.
-
What’s that mean
-
Most people that hate, do so for idiotic reason. I’ve yet to see any real meaningful and intelligent criticism of the games story. It’s not an easy story, and it’s a story that challenges the viewer. Gamers are not used to that. They are used to simplistic stories with simple characters.
The protagonist wants revenge, other characters don’t and challenges the protagonist thinking.
Absolutely fucking deep bruh, really makes you think about the human experience.
Kidding aside, TLOUS2 is a long ass game, with its highs, its lows and everything in between. It's hard to simply call its story "good" or "bad". It's definitely a step down from the first one imo, maybe because the writers spent half the game trying to make The PointTM , with very little nuance, just bashing your head with it. You know exactly what they think, you can almost see them moralizing at you. Conversely, at the end of the first game, I don't think anyone really knows what the writers think, what they consider the right choice, or even if there is one. This difference is indicative of the sequel's story issues imo
ID: gq787iqHow does it bash your head with the point?
ID: gq77scoThe point being that the cycle of violence is bad ?

Because game awards are kind of meaningless dick measuring contest though in this particular instance I assume it’s because that magazine/website in particular is not known for giving lowers ratings to games from outside Japan compared to its foreign counter parts.
