This is so much the worst thing about shallow subversive media. I hate it.
I know everybody bangs out the same three-four soapbox points about this movie, but I hope what I am about to say is interesting enough to justify mentioning it. If not, I am preemptively sorry.
Ok, the thing I dislike most about the Last Jedi is that Rian Johnson doesn’t go far enough with Star Wars.
He makes gestures towards the idea that it can’t be this simple. Somebody has to be making all these spaceships and blasters. You can’t win a war with one big hero. Come to think of it, the heroes we looked up to weren’t that impressive to begin with.
In these details, TLJ takes us out of Star Wars logic and into real world logic, except for one respect.
The First Order.
The villains are as bad as they always were. All the Sequels were bad with following through on “the Stormtroopers are people” angle. I am fine with Hux being a wild-eyed Hitler Youth graduate, but let me ask you this.
Why does the First Order exist, just according to Episode 8?
The answer seems to be “Snoke and Kylo Ren want power. Also Kylo Ren is miffed that Luke contemplated killing him.”
Really evil people exist, but they don’t exist without psychological depth.
Furthermore, making Luke angsty over his moral failings while Snoke is out there being cartoonishly evil makes Luke silly. It makes Rey silly when she doesn’t hold Luke to the immediate one-sided problem. This non-interventionist logic doesn’t work in a conflict this black and white.
What can the Jedi risk getting wrong? Maybe making more Dark Siders? As opposed to letting the ones that already exist win?
To paraphrase Woolie on Man of Steel, the story is about an obviously wrong old man who has to be convinced to beat the bad guys. The camera acts as if there is a serious dilemma that has to be worked through.
ID: gq6pwyyI've also found it weird that the comics they make fun of, often dive into the complexities of each sides actions and doesn't offer an easy solution. Like in Superman Vs The Elite, it doesn't say the Elite are completely in the wrong and Superman even admits to just how easy it would be to do what the Elite do. But there method boils down to "Might makes right" anyone who opposes them who are weaker then them get killed no questions asked, they aren't seeking out to help people they just want to get ride of people they don't like.
ID: gq72vqhLuke's not angsting he's hiding because he thinks he will heck up and make things even worse than before. How? I dunno. Luke doesn't know. All he knows is he made things worse and he doesn't think he can fix it and that if he tries he will make things worse. Maybe he thinks he'd become the next Dark Lord if he kills Ben since he doesn't think he can save him like Vader and it's clear if killed Vader he'd turn to the Dark Side? I don't know. It doesn't really matter, frankly.
He is also unaware of just how powerful the First Order is and Rey is trying to be nice to him because she still looks up to him, can see he's hurting and is herself unaware of just how close the FO are to wiping out the Resistance. They destroyed Starkiller, how bad could it be at the moment? Indeed, a deleted scene has her snap at Luke after he pulls some bs cause at that point she's sick and disillusioned with him at long last. Rian specifically wrote the story so neither Ray nor Luke could know how bad things were to justify why she'd be OK with taking her time.
TLJ doesn't say it's morally grey. Canto Bight isn't about how the rich fucks are grey it's about how rich people keep bad shit going because they profit from it. DJ says we should be neutral but Finn and the film itself say that just makes you complicit in the bad stuff. The "Grey" is the good guys finding the wisdom/courage/compassion etc to be good guys without hesitation.
Also F to that deleted scene where Finn calls out Phasma and the Stormies that were like "Wait is he telling the truth?" and also RIP to Stormtrooper Rebellion.

This is just the boys , it's kinda of astonishing how much this series is trying to shock you, in a terrible way is almost beautiful. Like watching someone that learned how to flying just to use this new power to screaming racial slurs suddenly hitting a brick building
