- Exactly one year ago, inspired by a few YouTube creators I decided to give this hobby a try. Since then I painted around 90 minis and I've learned that you need to thin your paints and that a lot of people hate Ultramarines. Here's to many more years of brush licking and Nuln oil spilling! Cheers!

Only took you 18181 years...
ID: gq3ofjsID: gq4gpj2More than halfway there to the 41st millennium!
-
Hate em or not, that's some smooth-assed blue.
ID: gq3oxpoAnd a lot easier to paint than yellow, for sure.

People hate Ultramarines? Hmmm, I've somehow not noticed that. (this is not sarcasm by the way)
ID: gq4pu5wI think that Ultramarines get a lot of flak from people who don't like the space marines in general. Space marines are the poster boys of GW, and get more love and support than any other faction, and Ultramarines being the 'default' are the poster boys of the space marines. So for people who already think a lot of space marines are bland, the Ultramarines are even blander than the other chapters. I personally joke a lot about the smurfs, and I'm a Xenos player so that colors my take on them. I don't hate them, but I do love to make them the butt of jokes
ID: gq5fxxzIt's fluctuated over time for different reasons. In my time in the hobby, which only dates back about 7 years, Smurfs were dunked on partially because of some bad writing and their "specialness" established by codex writer Matt Ward, under which all space marines saw the Ultramarine leaders and Primarch Roboute Guiliman as some spiritual lord, despite their own leaderships and Primarchs and everything. This of course wasn't super present everywhere but left a bad taste. The main motivation is space marines tend to get a lot of attention, and they are the default Chapter, so they get hate from those wanting more attention for their own factions. There is also something of a complaint of how bland they are in lore, and often self-important (the great Cato Sicarius comes to mind) though this has improved more as of late. I don't think most people genuinely hate the ultramarines, they may be a bit less exciting for some than the Blood Angels, Dark Angels etc. but they are quite accessible which is great for new players. Many are just tired of them being everywhere, and may be jealous of all the attention they get, and that they are most commonly the face of the franchise. But everyone enjoys and dunks on different Marine chapters for different reasons, and that should never get in the way of enjoying what are some great models and cool factions.
ID: gq3pad3Some time ago I joined a WH40k facebook group and the amount of hate that primaris and the ultras get shocked me. Sure, there are reasonable people who don't care but I do get serious comments like "good job but next time paint a better chapter".
ID: gq6ckncExcommunicate Traitors!
OK, sure, most people hate the ultrasmurfs because of Matt Ward breaking the game, back in early editions, by piling on way too much love in each new codex.
Me? I just point to the original article that introduced them, back in White Dwarf 98.
The Ultramarines aren’t in the original Rogue Trader. They show up several months later, in White Dwarf. Keep in mind they had no idea of what this would turn into, 30 years later, so they tended to toss off any crap that came to mind and have since retconned the living cr@p out of it.
The Ultramarines, back in WD98 had Spock as their librarian. Half human, half eldar, zero Fs given to the xeno hatred that would evolve. He went by Illyan Nastase if you want to look him up.
My favorite part, however, is the the modern Ultramarines are a much later founding, reviving and redeeming the color scheme of the original ultramarines who, along with their primarch, fell to chaos and disappeared into the eye.
If you ignore the retconning the heck out of it, it explains a lot. Why didn’t the ultramarines do anything useful during the heresy? Nothing to do with Word Bearers attacking them. They were off demonic sacrificing along with them, the traitorous scum.
But Roboute Gillaman is back to save humanity! Is he? Or is the traitor, who betrayed the emperor, back to corrupt what remains and drive the final nail into the corpse emperor’s coffin?
Just don’t tell any twelve year olds filling a GW the truth about their precious default army, once Covid clears up and stores reopen. GW relies on them by the thousands for revenue that old guys by the dozens can never match. You’ll get banned from the store in no time. 😉
If the little kiddies need to believe the lie about the true excommunicate path of their favorite default marines, they get to. Deny the heresy! Roboute is totally clean of sin! The ultramarines have always been loyal! Ignore that pesky original reveal! 😉

Thinning helps some techniques, but hurts others. The trick is knowing when a rule is a rule and when its a "rule."
ID: gq49o1gOh yeah, still learning that with every single model. It's a process but I do enjoy it.
-
I hope I’m that good after my 90th mini! That’s inspiring.
And I love Ultramarines, haters gotta hate, but they’re cool in the blue armor and everybody knows it.
(Okay, the red dudes are pretty cool too).
Anyway, seems like the trick to painting Ultramarines is to make the one gauntlet red and call them Red Fists.
ID: gq4m5ytHe earned millions with this one simple trick. The purists hate him 😉 As for other chapters, I want to paint them all, I just don't have enough paints nor plastic. There's no pile of shame yet. I guess I'm still too new to minipainting for that.

He grew up!

I think I recognize the guy on the left. Isn't that from Warzone?
ID: gq3w9hfA keen eye! Yes he is. It's one of the first edition Capitol Free Marines. I've had this model for 20 years but never painted it. Once I decided to give the hobby a go I pulled it out of my nostalgia drawer, grabbed some craft paints from a supermarket and went at it. I wish Warzone made a big comeback some day. I spent my teenage years drooling over the models but never got to play the game.

Amazing paint job! Which paints did you use for the blue?
Also I like how people's hatred of ultramarines fuels your love of them lol
ID: gq4agb0Blue was mostly vallejo paints. Base with ultramarine blue, then medium blue mixed with ultramarine, then medium again, then electric blue mixed with medium and then pure electric blue and some white. I then blended it all with heavily diluted ultramarines blue contrast paint and after that I went back with light blues again. Took some time, I'll tell you that. But I enjoed the experiment. Prior to that I mostly dry brushed my models. This one was my 5th done with proper layering and blending and I'm finally happy with the result.

In the year twenty twenty one, there is only war.
Good job though 🙂
ID: gq50j51Thanks 🙂 though, I still can't understand how I missed this before posting 😛
-
In the Grim Darkness of the 21st millennium... there's only thin coat! Jokes aside, AMAZING progress, mate!
ID: gq50d4iThanks 🙂 doing my best to make the Emperor proud 😉
-
Nice job on last year's model, by the way! Heartbreaker Minis Warzone/Mutant Chronicles Capitol sergeant if I'm not mistaken?
ID: gq6nrm9Correct! I do love Mutant chronicles. I wish it made a comeback some day.
-
Hey the first one aint bad
-
That's text work on the scrolls is amazing.
ID: gq6nlpkIt was done with a fresh new brush. It sure helped. 🙂

I'm starting to feel the desire to take this hobby up - but how do I explain this shit to my wife...
ID: gq6w87iI used my name day as an excuse. My wife was asking me what present I wanted (she's romantic like that) and I told her that'd the cheapest box of minis would be great. I didn't mention the paints of course. But then slowly, throughout the year I would buy two or three paints at a time and now I'm sitting at 50 different paints and over a 100 models (still have a few unpainted left). It solved her birthday/christmas/nameday whatever holiday kind of gift situation. Now she just asks what paints or minis I want, within a reasonable price range, which in GWs case is hardly any 😛
-
So this isn’t the place, but I don’t know where or how else to ask it. What is the deal with 40k dudes holding up shields/skeletons like that? Like what is the lore?
Also, your progress is insane. Great start and fantastic forward momentum.
ID: gq6nhzcThanks 🙂 as for the shield. Think he's just resting his hand. And that skeleton is probably some long dead saint whose bones protect from chaos or something. Honestly, I've no idea.
-
Hey there! Just wanted to say your minis look awesome. I'm about at your 2020 level of quality. Maybe not even tbh, but your post is inspiring how good someone can get in such a short period if they stick to the basics and commit to LEARNING.
ID: gq6nbt8Thanks 🙂 it's all baby steps but also experimentation. Some things you have to learn on your own and no amount of youtube will teach you.

That lightning is crisp!

90 in a year?
... AND THEY LOOK THAT GOOD!?
(you good!)
ID: gq7c302Oh no, they sure don't all look this good. I've only recently got to a level where I'm relatively happy. I can clearly see on my marines how certain things progressed. Like how I got better with pin washing or how I learned to not overdo the weathering effects etc. etc.
-
Stop licking your brushes people you guys are gonna get mouth cancer or worse mouth herpes.
ID: gq4gar0Acrylics are non-toxic, and plenty of painters admit to doing that to adjust the tips of their brushes.
Just don't get so much in that habit that you do it with enamels, please.
ID: gq5h5vqI only drink the paint water, so its okay
-
So I am at the point you were a year ago and I can only hope I achieve what you have in a years time! Great work! Love that blue, its stunning. You should be proud of your work.
ID: gq49qwjThank you so much for your kind words.
-
That guardsman is a damn fine paintjob for a beginner.
ID: gq6yb0cHe's actually a Capitol Free Marine (a catachan rip off if you ask me) from a lovely game called Warzone. I had him since the late 90s but never got to paint him. Better late than never, huh?

Ha! Didn't notice the typo... guess I'm a slow learner.
