ONI or Factorio

1 : Anonymous2021/03/07 01:07 ID: lzfro0

I am getting a gaming laptop, first time PC gaming as a lifelong console gamer. It comes next week. The first games I plan to buy are Oxygen Not Included and Factorio. They're similar games in some respects- both are indies with deep mechanics and some simulation aspects. The graphics are very different, but I'm curious about gameplay and UI. I want the game that will feel the best to play for a long while.. My plan is to start one of those games and, if all goes well, lose the next several weeks, if not months, of my life to it.

I intend to play both eventually, but I will probably need a break to play something more simple after whichever one my first pick is. Its unlikely- but possible- that the one I choose will be the only one I get to. So that's why I'm not just picking one at random- I want the one that'll give me best experience or maybe the least missable.

I was leaning towards ONI but now I'm watching Factorio videos on YouTube and it looks so tempting. Can people who have played both games compare and contrast the full experience of each for me? Is there anything I haven't considered, particularly things I wouldn't know after watching these games on Twitch/YouTube? Please, help me make this very momentous decision!

Just get the factorio demo and try it out. It's as good as they say. It's also worth noting the dev has stated it will never go on sale, so there's point in waiting for one.

I´m not in games like Factorio, but the reviews are really good so I played the demo... I would pay for that demo. Now Im just waiting to get money and buy it.

the dev has stated it will never go on sale

This really puts me off the game, the game can be the best thing ever, but if the devs are this anti-consumer, buying it just leaves a sour taste.

I'm less negative on ONI...avoided it for a long while because the graphics, but, what those quirky graphics do is set the expectations for non realistic systems. They are doing something nobody else does with their layers and layers of different systems. Overall, I love it. Love how it's really zero combat and you don't miss it (there's just butchering). However, ONI is a base builder game inspired by the Mastercraft of Dwarf Fortress . You have "pawns" (dupes) to grow attached to and to hate when their AI doesn't bend to your exact will.

That being said.... Factorio has devs that are unmatched. The game quality, stability, and polish is just unheard of in this modern game world. It's easily my most consumed game, and I haven't even touched mods. Factorio is more of a city builder. It's quite possibly the gold standard of factory chain games that births a new genre. Downside? No pawns, or characters...only you and the biters. Just pure design.

I appreciate this perspective. Everyone is saying factorio, but I'm almost wondering if it would work to get both, START with ONI, and assume I won't burn out on it enough (bc less complex/difficult) to make it difficult to move on to Factorio.

Do you have a rough estimate how long a good solid first go at ONI might last? You're mentioning a lot of what drew me to it- esp it being a much easier game in the style of Dwarf Fortress, which I really tried to get into but found I couldn't get past the visuals (even with a tile set).

Factorio for sure. ONI never seemed to take its systems seriously. There's a lot of jank with regard to the physics. Factorio devs on the other hand have paid meticulous attention to details of game balance, stability, and UX. It's not even a contest though I sure wish ONI were better. It's a great idea in theory.

What about factorio, satisfactory, or Dyson sphere?

I agree with this. Factorio is definitely more polished, it's frankly a work of art and its about as close to perfect as a game can be.

ONI is a lot of fun but it's a different experience for sure, definitely more buggy and not all mechanics are well implemented; for example, you can research a sweeper robot to help you clean but because it's poorly balanced your duplicants will almost always spend more time cleaning and maintaining the bot than they would if they had just manually did all the sweeping. The fun of ONI comes with the charm and character of the game.

You'll almost certainly get more hours of gameplay out of Factorio, it's notorious for sucking people in and still being fun and engaging 2,000 hours later. The gameplay in Factorio is both broader and deeper than ONI, and the mod scene is also way more developed.

Factorio is kind of in a league of its own tbh, you can't go wrong with getting Factorio first.

Wow, I didn't expect such a clear winner. I'll wait and see what others think, but this is pushing me strongly toward Factorio even though I'm a sucker for those ugly/cute ONI graphics.

I thought this was going to be about a 2001 Bungie game Oni and I was about to wholeheartedly recommend it over Factirio

Man, I miss that game. Would love to see a GOG release.

ID: gq2og5g

Same. Actually need to get to playing it myself.

ID: gq2ovkq

Oh shit I didn't know anyone else played Oni!

I haven't played Factorio but Oni was my mf'n jam back then. Anime, shootnin and third person beat-em-up combat? Lord_Boffum is pleased.

Played both. ONI is the game that I install once in a while, play for a weekend, then forget about it. It's an enjoyable game, but lacks staying power. If you want a project to work on for weeks or months, Factorio is probably a better value. If you include mods in the decision, then it's not even a contest.

7 : Anonymous2021/03/07 03:22 ID: gq27xsz

A bit tangential, but if you like Factorio, give Mindustry a try. It's even free on Itch and open source.

8 : Anonymous2021/03/07 03:52 ID: gq2ault

I have over 1000 hours in ONI, though a fair bit of those are idling. I can't comment on Factorio, but ONI is good in that it starts out fairly simple and increases in complexity as you go on a single map. It's not like you need to be a high-level player from the start.

9 : Anonymous2021/03/07 04:04 ID: gq2byf9

In the same vein, you might enjoy Rimworld for some fun aspects of both.

10 : Anonymous2021/03/07 08:30 ID: gq2wxsr

It's not even a question.

Factorio is simply the best base building / factory sim / tower defense whatever you want to call it take ever.

100x as much fun and gameplay oppo vs. ONI.

11 : Anonymous2021/03/07 06:24 ID: gq2ogot

100% ONI for me. It's insane.

Factorio is interesting for a little while but there's only one type of challenge really. Connect this thing to that thing efficiently, without going mental. ONI does all sorts of things that need balance. There's so many mechanics and wrinkles and new challenges and all sorts of nonsense. There is a lot of nonsense to learn.

For what you've described though, you want Rimworld. I have fallen in love with ONI of late, but I have 4.5k hours on the Rim. Infinitely replayable.

I will whole heartedly recommend Factorio. My friends have made these huge, sprawling, train-depot factories pumping out thousands of products a minute with fully automated defenses that reload themselves with a computer controlled ammo feed belt that encircles the whole facility. Then there is my cramped, ghetto, spaghetti belt factory that I'm shocked even made it to the end of the game with my meager resources.

There is no wrong way to play the game. If it works, it works, lol...

So many that are in favor for Factorio that I don't get it. I played the demo twice and can't tolerate the butt ugly graphics and the lack of managing minions. It feels like a lone survivor game but with factory mechanics. I'd rather play Subnautica and Long Dark for lone survivor games or Anno for logistics and factory chain production.

What I love about ONI is that you only have one asteroid (until you get the DLC) wherein you have to design systems to control the environment and ensure your colony's survival. There's no horde of enemies for artificial difficulty, it's just your colony vs the environment. It's a rewarding feeling when you overcome and tamed an asteroid. You'll also learn some handy real world physics concepts like thermal capacity, differences of density of gasses and liquids, thermal conductivity, and specific heat capacity and use then to your advantage in-game (i.e. knowing which material works best for some task). You can decide between strip mining the asteroid into a hollow husk or have its biomes preserved.

Within ONI's DLC that's currently in development, you can have multiple colonies spanning a solar system. The late game will be about managing the logistics of sending rockets from one colony to another or discovering new asteroids to conquer.

Thank you for speaking up for ONI. I really think I'll like both games... and I'm still not sure which one I'll pick. In some ways it feels like the safer play is to start with ONI and trust I won't be so burned out that I won't play Factorio afterwards, bc I think there's a big risk with Factorio of playing it for a while and then not playing any similar game for a long time once I finally burn out. But if I had to pick one I thought I might not like at all once I started it would be Factorio bc the graphics really don't draw you in.

14 : Anonymous2021/03/08 07:31 ID: gq6t63u

ONI is easier to start off, but towards the midgame it gets exceedingly frustrating as you begin to run into problems you never expect. Most commonly, your base will slowly heat up and the little dups will die.

Factorio is a lot less noob-friendly at the start, but the game scales far, far better, both in terms of game design and actual game performance. A crappy 10 year old PC could run it decently, whereas ONI will invariably slow down to a screeching grind unless you pay close attention to avoid doing things that reduce performance.

15 : Anonymous2021/03/07 02:04 ID: gq2084g

CRACKtorio. It really is as good as everyone says. Well worth the $30. Tons of game modes, mods, multiplayer, etc.

ID: gq23qlx

And it will never go on sale either. Which is totally fine. Actually one of the really funny/awesome things that came out of the never-on-sale ideology is that they were able to go after the notorious secondhand fraud website g2a because they were able to prove the copies were obtained illegitimately because they never go on sale:

16 : Anonymous2021/03/07 03:57 ID: gq2bclc

I've played and enjoyed both of them. Personally I enjoyed Factorio more though.

17 : Anonymous2021/03/07 08:08 ID: gq2vmud

Factorio, the gameplay loop is more fun than frustration. ONI is very frustrating.

18 : Anonymous2021/03/07 09:49 ID: gq31psi

I love Oni. I've put an embarrassing number of hours. But I haven't played factorio.

19 : Anonymous2021/03/08 05:29 ID: gq6ke5s

never played oni, but i can say factorio is amazing. plus it has a demo, so go try that out and see for yourself what you think

20 : Anonymous2021/03/07 02:37 ID: gq23idh

Factorio.

Klei sold out to Tencent so I can no longer recommend their games.
