- Eiyuden Chronicle by Suikoden Creators Won't Be Epic Games Store Exclusive; New Details Revealed
-
If it had been Epic exclusive, I either would not have backed, or would have backed for a different platform. My issues with Epic stem from their business practices and not wanting to do business with tencent.

Wow that article has an ad between every single sentence

Honestly? I feel like his quote might be misinterpreted. It happens all the time with gaming media. It's better to take everything with a grain of salt these days when it comes to games.
Read his quote: "In combing through the various backer comments, it’s clear that there is a great deal of concern about Eiyuden Chronicle being released exclusively on a PC platform. As mentioned previously, we have confirmed with any potential publishing partner, including 505 Games, that the game needed to be released on PC in a non-exclusive manner."
To me, it means they don't want to make it a PC exclusive, they want to release it on consoles aswell. But it also doesn't necessarily mean it will be available on every store on PC. He didn't specifically said: "Yes, it will be available on every PC storefront." He said: "It won't be a PC exclusive." That's a difference. You have to be very careful with the wording. Publishers and developers do this PR gymnastics all the time to avoid backlash.
Unless I'm the one who is misinterpreting what he said. In that case, I'm taking the L.

As a backer I’d have been pissed
ID: gqm5c2yWhy? Is it really so taxing for you to download the Epic Games app?
There are a lot of things to be upset about, but downloading an app to play a game is not one of them.

Actual question: why don’t people like Epic Games store?
ID: gqmjbjeIt's either the lack of features and security or Epic's overall business practices, mostly deepening title exclusivity within the PC platform. Some people are also citing Tencent as they are Epic Games shareholder.
ID: gqmiap0A. Yet another extra storefront, Having games spread out on Steam, Uplay, Origin, Twitch player, GOG, Desura (rip), Blizzard, Epic, It's defeated the entire purpose of having launchers at this point, so having yet another one is just frustrating.
B. Ties with the Chinese Communist Party, Tencent being the Gaming division of the CCP, Many can feel any purchase made through this store front is going towards that ideology.
C. Privacy Concerns, Epic was caught accessing places that it shouldn't have, Steam Friends lists, and other similar information.
D. Loyalty to other platforms, some people would rather support other platforms.
E. Deeper discounts, Steam Sales are a meme at this point, but Epic sales don't hold a candle to Steam, and exclusetivity reduces overall deals, when a product is on multiple storefronts, you have a much better chance of getting a deal.
Exclusivity in general just hurts consumers, choice always wins.
ID: gqmhpkxFirst of all, the client is a bit lackluster and lacks certain quality of life features that steam (and GoG if that matters) has. Second, their business practice involves aggressively secure exclusivity deals. People don't like to be forced to use the objectively speaking worst client. Third, there were allegations about your personal data sold by Epic to chinese companies. Fourth, Tencent owns 40% of Epic Games and if you don't know about Tencent I suggest googling it. It's basically an evil chinese overlord.
ID: gqms4olDirty business practices. Epic's founder, Tim Sweeny, is a notorious bastard that poaches games mere days before a scheduled launch to purchase exclusivity rights. Exclusive titles in the past are typically funded by a publisher from the beginning, but Epic's strategy is to buy exclusivity from games that are 99% done already, blindsiding patrons who expected to buy it on another platform, such as Steam.
Plus, the Epic Games platform is extremely barebones, and lacks basic features such as having a shopping cart. How do you even launch a storefront without having basic shopping cart functionality? If you want to buy anything on EGS, you have to buy each item individually, one at a time. The whole platform is just riddled with issues that makes the experience unpleasant at best, and a moderate security concern at worst.
Steam has 20+ years of development over it, making it a superior platform in every way, yet Epic keeps actively trying to undermine Valve because they want to a bigger piece of the pie. It's fueled entirely by greed, with no regards for the actual playerbase.
ID: gqmk4lxCombination of some things, convenience, epic store lacking features and security compared to steam, and Epic's business practices. Epic's CEO is pushing the "multi-store future" and yet seeking exclusive deals only with some games like DARQ (instead of allowing the game to be sold on both Steam and Epic). Several other digital stores already exist, like itch.io and GOG, and yet they didn't find it necessary to seek exclusivity.
With that said though, the exclusivity deal with Epic significantly benefits the developers. Like, it cannot be understated how significant lifting a financial burden is in general. For indie devs, this safety net could be a lifesaver in such a competitive industry.

Even if it were to release exclusively on Epic Games, the fact that so many people were concerned about this blows my mind. It's not like console exclusivity where you have to own a different machine. The store is literally just an app. Download new app, make purchase, you play.
An issue blown way out of proportion.
ID: gqm5eynIt's not as it's not available on linux.
ID: gqma5gnPeople don't like to install several apps. It's a matter of convenience.
Join that to the fact that the app is horrendous, 40% of Epic is owned by Tencent and Epic tries to buy exclusivity over games they don't develop, and I think it's pretty normal for people to hate it.
ID: gqm6ur4It's not just an app. It's the security issues and lack of features that's the problem.
Sure, you COULD download another app.... or you could avoid the issue and release on the app practically everyone uses
ID: gqm7777The unfortunate reality is that the Epic Store carries a lot of negative connotations in the PC gaming world. While it would have been lovely for them to have just come up as an alternative to Steam (Because competition is always a good thing), the reality is that, at least when they came up, they made a point of being deliberately user antagonist, and they have not done themselves any favors since then.
ID: gqm7mcuIt's not as bad as console exclusivity, but Steam is more functional and well-supported in every possible way. Things like universal controller support, Proton, achievements, user reviews, community guides, forums, and workshop all being built in means that any game will just be a more complete package on Steam. So having games I'm interested release only on a definitively worse platform just makes me feel bitter.
ID: gqm76vcegs is a shitty app and i don't want to use that
ID: gqm4uqnI guess people don't like using anything other than steam? I don't see it as a problem. Steam needed competition ages ago.
ID: gqmaiyiI’m the same way. No one says a word about the blizzard launcher or every other launcher under the sun. Why is epic such a huge deal?
ID: gqm5mp6I agree 100% so many gamers complain about having to register with and launch Origin, Epic, Ubisoft, Xbox Game Pass, even Twitch now for Cyberpunk. Then have no problem using instagram, twitter, facebook, TikTok, Discord, Twitch even YouTube, to communicate through social media. I know my comparison isn't exactly the same, but the point is in there. Plus Epic Games give away decent free games without a subscription every month, and is very simple to use. Just turn off all notifications, have it load upon startup, and your done. Sorry for the long rant but I'd rather post in this small post in a niche sub then get downvoted into oblivion on
or pcmasterrace.ID: gqm4xlfCompletely agreed.

I’d still take it with a grain of salt until the game is actually released. I don’t have an issue with the Epic Store personally but the reality is that too many things could change before the game is actually released. Hopefully it will be non exclusive on PC as that will mean more options for everyone.
-
I avoid Epic because I don’t like their launcher and their attempts to secure exclusives as a means to break into the market. Is there a bigger reason other people are against patronizing the Epic Games Store?
-
I think the better direction it to make like 8 of the 108 characters exclusive to each platform, like you know a little Suikoden Red and Blue type of action.
So Eiyuden Steam would get some unique recruitables, like maybe a big fat guy who makes all the items in the game go on discount every couple of months. While Eiyuden Epic Chronicles gets its own set like maybe a businessman who forcibly buys out your enemies so you don't have to fight them.
Sure you might say this is dumb but I am a 10k backer and I have complete control and Murayama is my mutual on Japanese facebook.

Ehh, not entirely convinced. I'm sure they wish well, but nothing is certain unless it's in ink.
EDIT: Btw, 52 comments but I can only see 5. Gotta love the block feature, helps filter out very obvious fan wars I've grown tired of.
ID: gqmnsotAs in youve blocked other users or theres some sort of advanced filtering?

Yep, same. Would not have backed if it were Epic-exclusive. Although, they did say in the Kickstarter
Exclusive Releases for a Quick Money Grab: We have confirmed with any potential publisher that we will not sign a contract with them that shuts off a key platform from our backers.
So I kinda assumed this wouldn't be an issue in the first place.
