Like, right off the top of my head about half your crew in FFX are teenagers. FF8 I think almost all of them are teenagers (I haven't played it so not sure exactly) FFXII Van and Penelo are teenaged.
Golden Sun all your party members are teenagers except for Eoleo in Dark Dawn I think. Well Piers isn't I guess technically
Xenoblade, Shulk, Reyn, Seven and maybe Melia depending on your definition are teenagers.
Dargon Quest XI - Luminary, Veronica, Serena, Erik are teenagers or younger
Funnily enough in Mario RPG I think Mallow is the only non-adult in your party

I'm 33, and 21 year olds look like kids to me. The difference between people in their very early 20s and late teens feels non-existant now, even though I remember it feeling huge at the time.

Final Fantasy always was good about not having the entire party be compromised of teenagers with VIII being the exception and IX being the next closest with half of your party were all 16 or younger.

It's actually really refreshing. Especially since i'm in my 30s now. Also vincent is 27 but technically like 60? He didnt really have much to do in all those years... except regret and think about the past...which explains why he's so awkward. His emotional growth was stunted but at least he was already an adult before that happened.
ff9 ages rage from 6 to 33 so it's a pretty spread out group age wise

I wish more JRPGs had older characters in general. I know the Tales games are typically pretty good for this, but I want to see more protagonists that are like 30+.

By comparison, the oldest “normal” male character is 62.

JRPG character ages are all arbitrary nonsense. Characters never act or look their ages. I'm playing Xenoblade right now and none of these characters act like teens except MAYBE Reyn, and Dunban only looks older because of his beard, if he looks older at all.
Unless it is canonically important for a character to be a child, I just think of them as "adults" and move on.

That's what I liked about Lost Odyssey, it was different. They were all adult characters, sometimes with adult issues besides the main story. There are only 2 young characters in the roster compared to the rest of the cast who are all adults.

Persona 2 has an older cast, well at least one of the games does.
But for Final Fantasy I know at least IV, VI and XIV(Scions and stuff) have an older cast.

In Eternal Punishment (iirc), Maya is 23, Ulala is 24 (which is where a lot of her angst comes from thanks to “Christmas cake” stereotypes), Baofu is 35 (I think?), and I don’t remember Katsuya’s age, but I think he’s in his 20s. As are Nanjo and Eriko (who are also from Persona 1).

Yeah, no matter what my age (I've been playing JRPGs for over 23 years), I've never really understood the appeal of playing as kids or even teenagers. Young adults, fine, but the Japanese obsession with putting VERY young people in their games (and animals) never really resonated with me. And they did seem older in FFVII, which is one of the reasons that game stood out for me at the time, honestly.

Hot take, I've always felt like the younger VII cast(Yuffie withstanding) should have been older(at least by 4 years) based on their personalities. The remake didn't do much to asage that feeling.

I always remember one flashback scene in FFVII where Cloud's mother says that he should go for "a nice older girl", obviously to set up Aerith as the 'right girl' for being 22 to his 21.
Now that I'm in my thirties, that's absolutely hilarious. Yeah, that world of difference between a 20yo girl and a 22yo girl...

I actually remember that being negative for Final Fantasy 8 for me that the entire group are a bunch of teenagers. The age variety in Final Fantasy 7 and especially Final Fantasy 6 was kind of a big deal to me because it provided for interesting storytelling.

I actually really like that about the story since this means it won't be just another coming of age story; it's more about relationships to the people around us and the planet itself and that's a beautiful thing.

Being fair, the FFX cast wasn't that teenage heavy, Rikku was 15, Tidus and Yuna 17, Wakka and Lulu were like 22-23, Auron is 35 and I forgot about Kimahri, but he was between 25-27 of I'm not bad. Not the same as FFVII, but not on the all 17 crew that was FFVIII, with Quistis being like 18 and therefore the oldest main character.
My favourite FF example is FFIV:TAY tho, with Cecil, Kain, Yang, Edward, Cid, Golbez, Edge and Rosa all being over 30, with only 3 characters being actual teenagers.

If you come to think, most Final Fantasies aren't really for teenagers...
Not saying they have some heavy violence or nudity whatsoever, but FF IV, V and VI are also very serious... adults trying to deal with a lot of responsibilities in a world in war, going against old men and tyrants, something most adults usually have to face...
There's some kids there, Rydia, Palom, Porom, who act like something those adult have to watch over, and also, if a kid identify with them, better yet
Final Fantasy VIII was from a era in which it was cool to be a teenager with a lot of existential issues, a couple adults identify with Seifer, Edea, Quistis, who seem like adults, and some with the teenagers, cheerful and emotive, so it increased the age range they were aiming
FF IX and FFX are something else; it's very teenager, although both stories are also dense and slightly mature in a couple parts, have this appeal for teenagers living adventures, some drama and colors and stuff
Some adults enjoyed because they had good experience with previous FFs titles, imo
Nowadays I have no patience with Squall personality, so it wouldn't be a interesting game anymore, and Zidane sure is a annoying yelling kid...
And now I understand why Cid, Barret are all grumpy and I identify a lot with Auron, someone I used to dislike in my previous FFX gameplay

I think after VII, they started making their characters a little younger to try and appeal to a broader audience.

For the most part FF games feature a diverse range of age groups. It's other JRPG IPs that lean hard into the "party of adolescents" trope.

i liked that in xenoblade 1 characters actually acted way more mature than in most games and i wouldnt call any of them teenagers even if they are. on the other hand i would definitely call cloud from ff7r a teen. ages dont matter that much like they can say whatever number they want its all about how they act and look. i dont care if a loli is canonically 10000 years old shes still a child and vise versa(only talking about fiction ofc)

Who's shitting on ff7? It's one of the most beloved games of the genre. Not sure what the strong feelings are about ff8. Not my personal favorite of the bunch, but definitely not among the worst.

Reading this made me feel really age-ist. I've been playing BDII and just cant get over the fact that Elvis is significantly older than the others. The overall dynamic of the group just feels less fun than the previous two parties in the series. At the same time, it might just be the lack of symmetry. Maybe if there were two older characters instead of just one, it would have worked better.

Tales of Berseria's cast has adults aside from one character (depends a bit on it if you count 18+ as an adult or not).
I really like it if there are different age groups in my party, makes it possible to show different lines of thoughts. Older men (are there even older women?) are a nice addition, too. Rowen rocks, iirc, he is 61?

Velvet: 19 (16 in the prologue)
Laphicet: 10 (though he’ll live much longer than that)
Rokurou: game never says, though given that he’s younger than Shigure, I’d say that he’s in his early 20s at the oldest
Eleanor: 18
Eizen: said to already be a thousand years old by this point
Magilou: game never says, but given that her backstory happened forever ago in the lore, she’s clearly using the same oath that Melchior did (and Zestiria indirectly confirms it). She always dances around the question when asked, which leads both Velvet and Eleanor to think that she’s much older than she looks.

Cloud, Tifa, and Aerith all feel like they should be a little older than they are. It's not horribly off though. The remake makes them feel mid-to-late 20s.
Ashe in FF12 is supposed to be 19 and it makes little sense she's had enough time to get married, then widowed, and build up for revenge for what feels like ages. She should be 30 minimal.

i think it's the later FFs (post-SNES era) that the FF characters seem to always be in their teens

I like when party members are all close to the same age. It's easy to get past in sprite-based games, since they're all the same height and build anyways, but it's weird to me when there's a very noticeable age difference in 3D JRPGs or games with more detailed sprites. Like why does an old man need to travel with a bunch of teenagers? It kinda hurts the role playing aspect for me
