Hello, PS4 people!
I want to give you some information before you hop into Star Wars Squadrons, coming to EA Play on March 18.
This game is insanely fun, but it has a significant learning curve. I suggest you fly a few missions in Single Player before you jump into Multi Player Dogfight (DF) or Fleet Battle (FB). This is just to get a few mechanics down. I raise awareness because some of the lessons you’ll learn will assist you immensely if you decide you want to focus on MP.
This game is primarily a team (squadron) game and is way more enjoyable when played with friends. There are pitfalls to queuing solo and also with a group, so to alleviate some stress, I’m going to direct you to a handful of places that will assist your entry into the game.
First and foremost, if you don’t already have friends playing the game, find friends to play the game with. The more people you play with, the better your learning experience will be in the game. You can go to the Star Wars Squadrons Reddit, or specifically search for the Wingman Wednesday thread to find groups to play with; the Reddit also has a dedicated Discord Server.
Additionally, there is RDT2’s Spreadsheet of Discord Servers that will give you a list of most of the Discord servers that the community uses.
If you’re excited about spending more time in the game and getting more familiar with some tactics and abilities, there are a handful of training options available. On YouTube you can find Fencar’s flying videos where he explains mechanics from basic to experienced. Additionally, you can also find the Krayt Squadrons Academy to get more 1-on-1 or even squad training.
Finally, on behalf of the Star Wars Squadrons community, I want to welcome any new pilots coming into the game on EA Play. Or, if you have the game and decided to stop playing, maybe the above resources can give you an incentive to give the game another shot. The galaxy is always looking for more pilots.
Fair flying and straight shooting, pilots!

Gonna slap on the PS VR for this one.

The game is pretty simple, and only takes few missions to learn everything there is to learn. You also want to play it on Pro, as it looks rather basic on regular PS4.
Its downside is that there are very little rewards for pilots. Few unlockable skins and optional suits just does not cut it. You need to add more interesting rewards for prolonged play or people will just get bored in few days.
ID: gqpkwtlUnfortunately, there is very little addon potential. The crew at Motive have been very forthcoming with information about the game, and the sustainability for the player base isn’t as strong as it is for BF2. So, you won’t be able to new trinkets that often, but we are making due.
ID: gqpm3baPlease tell me that there are at least Gold skins for the ships for the best pilots or something. So you could fly around in golden X-wing to show off.
I havent played the game since January, so I need to reinstall and see if there's any added stuff. I really love the visuals on PS4Pro. Bigger ships look especially impressive on fly-bys. And the single player campaign had really good missions in it, making it worthy purchase just for that.
The game does need photo mode, tho, so you could take gorgeous pics from outside the ship, at least in single player modes...

I've only played a little so far (single player) but I really liked it. It feels like the first proper space flight sim we've had in decades (single player, again). I grew up loving Wing Commander, X-Wing, etc. and this feels like a real throwback to those, difficulty and all. It's not an arcade shooter, its a sim. I wouldn't play it without a joystick (I have a HOTAS for my PS4 but even a simple stick would help I think), though.
ID: gqpi2e3A lot of players use the controller, myself included. The JS setup feels unnatural to me, but the PS controller works well. It’s up to preference and mappings. Hope to see you out there!
Happy hunting!
ID: gqptf6mI'm sure it's totally playable with a controller, but flight sims just feel "off" to me without a stick when it's in-cockpit. Then again, it took me years to get used to using a controller for FPS since I grew up using mouse and keyboard on PC!
I'm not really a multiplayer gamer, but might give it a try sometime. Have to work through the campaign first, though! Biggest issue is indeed the joystick and that I need to set it all up to play, compared to other games where you can just grab the controller and sit anywhere! I think it is just because I've waited so long for something like this (X-Wing Alliance might have been the last!) that I want to enjoy the full in-cockpit, stick and throttle experience. 🙂
ID: gqskbqqHave you played Elite Dangerous? It was a little too cryptic for me but a lot of people absolutely love it as a space flight sim.
ID: gqsm3aaOwn it but have never played it. It's pretty much multiplayer only, isn't it, unless something has changed? I'm not really an online/MP fan, but I bought it on sale to support more space flight sims. 🙂 maybe some day I will give it a go!

Yeah, I hate when all the gaming platforms don't play well with each other. It's like, they have to make it as painful as possible to fix a problem and none of them take credit for the issue.

ID: gqpw8wvPractice more in dogfights and watch some Youtube guides before going to ranked. Better yet, join one of the community Discords and fly with others who can teach you- there's a LOT the game doesn't teach you in the campaign, and it can be really intimidating to play fleet battles at first because you have no idea what to do.

Well, isn't it the same like the space fights in battlefront 2? I played that and did well wouldn't in theory I will do well in this game as well?
ID: gqq0kbgNope. Completely different flight model and mechanics.

I played through the single player and enjoyed it, but I ditched the multiplayer fast as it was way too hard and competitive for me, very steep learning curve combined with poor matchmaking makes for a frustrating experience.
ID: gqqq7uzIf you played at launch, you’ll be happy to know that they’ve changed it drastically. You’ll probably have a 3ish minute Q and the matches are more balanced than they were. In the beginning it was pure FFA, and not great for newer players.

There's no way in hell I'm going to join a discord or group of gamers dedicated to anything to do with the Star Wars brand.

That wasn’t the intent, but if you want to take it that way, that’s up to you.
Happy hunting!
