Hi everyone, I'm not really sure if this type of post is allowed, I read the rules but couldn't really find the definitive answer.
I see that the Phoenix Wright trilogy is currently on sale and I'm curious if it's worth getting when I've never played any of the games before. I know almost nothing about Phoenix Wright but I absolutely love the Danganronpa series. I'm not sure if their at all similar so sorry if it's silly to bring that up. I'm just unsure if I should save my money for something else to hold me over till Nier.
Thank you for any and all advice in advance!

I absolutely love the Phoenix Wright trilogy. They're definitely worth it if you like mystery type games.
They're very similar to danganropa.
-
It's one of my favorite sagas, played that trilogy and other 3 games at least twice each.
If you like anime style stories (it kinda mixes reality with fantasy in its cases) and graphic adventures I'd say go for it, for the price you're getting what I believe are the three bear games of the series.

If you like visual novels (and it seems like you do if you played Danganronpa), then these are one of the best ones out there, and a real classic. Hell, I would even recommend it for people new to visual novels that just want great entertaining stories. Great characters all around.
ID: gqs8atvID: gqs8vouThere is gameplay, you will investigate the murders, talk to people, collect evidence and finally solve the case and feel like a true ace attorney(at least thats how i felt xd) . However the game is heavily character based so there is a lot of dialogue.

I would probably say it is worth it if you like Danganronpa games. Story isn't as suspenseful but the courtroom is a little similar. If you also enjoyed other Spike Chunsoft games like Ai Somnium Files, 428 Shibuya Scramble, Zero Escape: nonary games and Zero Time Dilema, then it is most likely you will enjoy Phoenix Wright.
ID: gqs881oI haven't played any other Spike Chunsoft games yet unfortunately, I've often seen Phoenix Wright quite a bit but never felt compelled enough to actually purchase the games. Since it's the trilogy, I'm curious are the games long?
ID: gqs8oy0every game is around 20~ hours long each i finished it in 65h and i must say it was really worth it.
ID: gqtii1sMy favorite things about Danganronpa are the music and the executions. Does The Phoenix Wright series have similar music, and do you get to witness the murders play out?
-
If you like Danganronpa for how clever the story is you'll like Phoenix Wright too.
PW has better investigation and courtroom part, no unnecessary truth bullet minigames like DR. But PW has no voice actings because it's remaster of old games.
ID: gqsqmohAh ok, the lack of voice acting is kinda disappointing since Danganronpa had some really good voice acting imo. I'm always looking for games to play that I don't need to listen to though, so I can have a podcast or something, so I think it's not that big of a deal to me in this case. Thanks for the insight!

Oh, definitely. They're some genuinely fun and engaging murder mysteries and are downright hysterical at time. Best advice is to go in blind without any other knowledge about the games.
-
Oh shit, thanks for letting me know it’s on sale I’ve been meaning to try it for a while now!
ID: gqt3fz1Yeah it seems to be a really good deal hence my wanting to finally take the plunge!

I love the series, but see no point in playing on a screen larger than mobile. You can get the games on iOS among others.
ID: gqsqgjyI'm not sure if it's on Vita or not but it seems like the most convenient way for met to play through them atm would be on my PS5, but thanks for letting me know!
ID: gqtbg2hSure, if you don't have other options! My opinion is that there's little going on on the screen at any one time, and very few controls as well. It's pretty much an interactive story.
Still, I keep replaying the series for how pleasant it is. Do play them in order. Here's the recommended order due to the titles not giving the information away. (Note: not all are available on PlayStation):
Ace Attorney Justice for All Trials and Tribulations Edgeworth Investigations 1& 2 Apollo Justice Dual Destinies Spirit of Justice -
It’s a great series, absolutely worth it IMO.
-
Yes yes and yes.
-
If you loved Danganronpa it's absolutely worth it. Great series. Really clever and fun writing, courtroom "battles" are similar but without the quicktime or reflex-based stuff. And they're pretty lengthy, so you'll get your money's worth.
Also be sure to check out the Nonary games/Zero Escape trilogy. It's usually on sale once or twice a year. Those are excellent as well
ID: gqtbemjWow thanks for the suggestion! I'm always looking for games to try!
-
Yes its amazing
-
The problem is that its very slow paced. Though if you like to play with text, then you should buy it.
-
I like them. But they have, and I'm not exaggerating here, 0 replay value.
They are pretty short too. Like 8 hours each at best. But I liked the storys and dialog. It also helps you see the meme content when you see phoenix wright meme formats though those aren't as common as they once were
ID: gqsx1u7The 8 hours at best is completely inaccurate.
Ace Attorney (game 1) has 5 episodes, and just EP5 is 7+ hours long (if you manage a flawless playthrough, which you won't).
Expect to spend 20 hours on each of the three games.
ID: gqsq8j0Oh that's a bit of a disappointment, but I think having just played and replayed all of Persona 5 S a game that I only need to play through once is kinda a breath of fresh lol
-
I really like the courtroom sections of the game but I find everything in between kind of boring, especially since there is no voice acting.
-
It's got very childish dialogue and characters. A lot of views seem to be from people who played it when they were young. The music was great though.
ID: gqsqcmeFrom the very little I know about the series that seemed to be the appeal, would you you say the 3 games are worth trying for $15?
ID: gqsr25wAfter having tried the first I'd call it a waste but I'm a stickler for not having cheesy dialogue. Put it this way: if you can watch most anime without cringing you'll probably enjoy it.

Oh ok that's great to hear! So there's not much gameplay then? It's mostly like choice based?
