What’s with the flawed (borderline shady) sales reports/articles of RE games?

1 : Anonymous2021/03/17 16:49 ID: m74rhk

Let's get this out of the way. I'm not discussing the quality of the games mentioned. RE5 is still the best selling RE game at 13+ million copies.

Shortly after RE8 was revealed, these articles started spreading that RE7 is best selling RE in single release sales. But the headlines were making it out to be like as though it is highest in gross sales and that it took over RE5.

Even their single release sales logic is flawed. First, RE7 launched on 3 platforms whereas 5 launched on 2. PC version released months later. Comparing the sales of 3 platforms vs 2 is pointless.

Second, it seems like the gold edition sales were included in the "single release sales" amount. However, it wasn't for RE5 as it shouldn't be.

At the moment RE7 is roughly 8.5M and 5 at 13.5M. 7 hasn't even outsold RE6 in gross sales. Is Capcom trying to hype up RE8 by boosting RE7's sales records with a warped method of calculation?

Non RE fans would read the "RE7 best seller" headlines and get into the series through that game and then eventually buy RE8 as it's a direct sequel?

Is Capcom intentionally dethroning RE5's best seller status to boost RE8?

easy there pepe silvia, not everything in life is a conspiracy theory.

Capcom probably used the PSVR version of Biohazard to brainwash us, trust me I'm an expert

The numbers don't add up. Not even remotely.

"THE NUMBERS, MASON. WHAT DO THEY MEAN?"

But in all seriousness OP, I think this will provide the answer you're looking for.

"Capcom’s latest sales numbers reveal RE7 has sold some 7.9m units, which makes it the best-selling individual title in the series and Capcom’s second best selling individual game ever, behind Monster Hunter World (16.1m).

However, Resident Evil 5 surpasses that figure (10m) if sales of the original game are combined with its Gold Edition, which released a year later bundled with DLC."

It's an odd way to word it, but i think they're just saying 7 is the best selling vanilla RE release with no add ons or re-releases. They might've also put launch window sales into their calculations, but who knows.

".....but i think they're just saying 7 is the best selling vanilla RE release with no add ons or re-releases"

That's what I am saying. Even by that logic, it is incorrect.

it kind of looks like in your original post you're just picking and choosing what data counts and what doesn't for launch sales. It doesn't matter that 5 launched on less platforms for the purposes of the data capcom has presented. one outsold the other, it's easier to sell more on more platforms, but that's the way they've chosen to express their data.

In my experience, inflating sales news is more often done by bloggers trying to present a catchy headline.

Most common cause I see are bloggers misunderstanding or misrepresenting the information on this official Capcom page;

/finance/million.html" class="reddit-press-link" target="_blank" rel="noopener">https://www.capcom.co.jp/i/finance/million.html

Capcom isn’t trying to be misleading the page, but it’s often taken to present misrepresentative data.

In that very Capcom link, RE5's gross sales aren't mentioned. But RE7's is.

Yeah, because Capcom considers it one launch. There isn’t anything misleading here because this is just IR data that you’re expected to understand the nuances of.

The issue you’re noticing is bloggers misrepresenting the data despite that not being Capcom’s MO.

I mean paid reviews are common. Why can't paid news be?

Bloggers are paid by the people who hired them who own the outlet they work for. I can assure you Capcom isn’t publishing information designed to misrepresent their own company favorable and paying unknown journalists for clickbait coverage.

Not to criticize the entire gaming news industry but it kind of just is full of unnuanced reporting.

The cumulation should not be confused with the initial release.

First of all the real "official" source is here :

/finance/million.html" class="reddit-press-link" target="_blank" rel="noopener">https://www.capcom.co.jp/i/finance/million.html

Then, it's just numbers...

RE7 is the best-selling "one-off" game, that's it.

RE5 Gold version is another version than RE5 (normal) in their eyes.

And for me the success of RE2 (1998) is more notable because it's a version on a single platform (PS1).

PS: The numbers are even rather "false" on RE5 (because they incorporate the content of the Gold Edition when you buy the game...like with RE6 which is a full version, isn't it ?)

Who cares? This is not something you should be concerned about.

You cared enough to comment. I'll be concerned about whatever interests me.
