- PS5 will officially cost EGP 15999 ($1000) in Egypt
-
iirc during the launch of the PS4 it was cheaper for Brazilian people to buy a plane ticket to the US and buy one there rather than buy one off the shelf in Brazil.
ID: grxh268ID: grxlbwdIt's the hardest time I've ever had trying to spend $500.
ID: gry3q5tI wonder when this will be possible 2022?
ID: gry6y6yAnd then you have to pay the import tax for smuggling.
ID: grydfdrThere's a tax in customs you had to pay. It was still cheaper to travel, buy, pay the taxes than buying it from retailers.
ID: grynmx4is it illegal for an American to bring a bunch of playstations to Brazil and sell them like +$100 over US price but still way under Brazilian retail?
ID: grysf14I think it would be classified as smuggling unless if you pay the customs fees. The customs fees are expensive so you have to sell it for more than $100 over the US MSRP. If you don't pay the fees, it would be illegal.

Is this because of import tax or some kind of electronic tax? Wondering if it's a government thing or Sony.
ID: gry19trYup, import tax in Egypt is ridiculously high
ID: grz2baaJesus, it is ridiculous. That's over twice the price
ID: grzdyiiHow is that fair? Aren’t tariffs are supposed to protect local manufacturers? Show me a Brazilian or Egyptian console manufacturer! And I just can’t wrap my head around the idea that I who live in one of the wealthiest nations on earth pay half as much for a PS5 than someone in a much poorer country.
-
Brazil: First time?
-
Why are import taxes so high in these countries
ID: gry639bTypically import taxes are designed to protect local industries and jobs against foreign competition.
ID: gryfc2rLmao are there some Egyptian-made consoles I'm sleeping on?
ID: grywjjpThat really doesn’t apply here though.
ID: gryhob0Shit governments with zero strategical plans where their only way to make money is to squeeze it from the people.
ID: grz7fqqBrainlet take from a Redditor that doesn't understand foreign trade policy
-
Sounds like a pyramid scheme
ID: grymvzhID: grxqleuI see what you did there, sphinx.
-
I've paid $903 for Digital Edition in Turkey. I see how stupid I am as I'm writing this.
ID: grz00hdSome people in the US paid as much just to be able to get it as a Christmas present
ID: gry9zilI bought it for usd 850 in lebanon the disk version tho.
ID: gryi1ddWhy so expensive?
-
Here in Brazil the PS5 is costing a grand too and the Xbox Series X is 1.2K
ID: grxrzi6That's because of import tariffs. The only cheap thing in Brasil is food.
ID: gry64x5Was food*
With our currency loosing so much value in the past 15 months the exportation skyrocket so the internal market became expensive due to international value of the food.
Meat prices are bonkers for any average Joe.
ID: grxweoyNot even food right now.
The official price for the Series X here is 4599. The official price for the PS5 is 4699. That is, these values are wrong, the dollar prices here are $834 for the SX and $852 for the PS5
ID: gryuugwThis is wrong. PS5 disk version is R$4600 which, using todays dollar, translates to $834 dollars. At the time of release, the dollar was cheapper, which would translate to, approximadetly, $800 dollars. Still expensive, but way more reasonable than 1.2k dollars
-
1700 dollars here in uruguay.
Average income per capita: 500 dollars
Minumum wage: 430 dollars
Just so you imagine.
ID: grz7gm1And im here in a countrywere,i dont wake up for this money ... crazy world
-
You can buy the president of egypt for 1000$
ID: grxfsudI laughed way to hard at this.
ID: gryjb3aHe aint worth that much tbh
-
Isnt it cheaper to buy crosscountry?
ID: gry9679You need to pay tax at customs in that case normally
-
Not surprised the governemnt takes so much tax here too, I live in Turkey
ID: grypxzfThis. I've seen some people come at Sony over this and it's not their fault. They can't just give them away.
-
This is fucking embarrassing
ID: gryvrq7Tell me about it? I feel so sad my cousins won't be able to get one 🙁
-
İn Turkey it is ~950$. Far as I know Brazil is worse. Apparently Egypt joined to the party as well. Obliviously Problem is these countries economy.
But the key thing that most of the European or American gamers doesn’t understand is it takes more than 3-5 months to get a PlayStation 5 without eating and paying bills. Income is very low and taxes on these machines are incredibly high. Governments earn more money than Sony, Microsoft, Apple without doing absolutely nothing. Even if you can afford to buy a game console. Buying games is whole another problem.
For many gamers on Europe, 10£ increase in game prices is not a big issue but for the countries like Brazil, Egypt and Turkey it means a lot. In Turkey you can only buy 4 games with your monthly payment. No regional pricing, god level taxing with minimum monthly income.
-
The sad thing is that people from countries like that try to protest this but really they should be talking to their governments, since the only reason it is that expensive is due to tariffs and taxes
ID: grz58b1we get jailed if we talk to the government here mate
-
Why so much controversy? That's the case for basically the rest of the world outside of Europe, USA, Canada and Australia (and probably NZ and some other random country). I thought it was alredy known that third world countries have these kind of ridiculous prices.
-
Damn, that's crazy
-
Taxes are a bitch.

Too bad I live in the US and I can’t just waltz into Best Buy or Walmart and buy one.
