- Interview with Returnal’s game director and Marketing head -IGN
-
As a Dark Souls enjoyer, it's not Dark Souls. It is a great game, though. I bought it and am liking it a lot.
ID: gwnwexjID: gwo6xazI haven't played it, but at lot of the commentary I've heard and something about the look of it make me think a lot of Bloodborne, which is of course a good thing.
-
Some people are calling this soulslike and it is kinda weird. People conflate Soulslike with difficult but Returnal is literally just a third person bullethell game. Remember those old school snes/arcade spaceship shooters/scrollers and all you do is dodge bullets? That's bullethell. Mix in roguelike elements and third person and you have Returnal.
Housemarques last game was just a isometric Returnal and I have never heard of it before. Linky
Returnal is definitely not for everyone but difficulty is the main point of the two combined genres.
ID: gwlu3m1It’s definitely not anything like a Souls game in mechanics or style, but the one true companion I can see is that both games are uncompromising in their vision. It’s clear that both housemarque and From make the games they want to make without caring where it will sell well, is too hard, or doesn’t appeal to a massive audience. I think in this way, Reternal captures a lot more of the Soul (pun intended) of Fromsoftware games than many games which are dubbed Soulslikes
ID: gwlukyiI'm trying to explain that people are conflating difficult games with soulslike games. From software made Demons Souls which pretty much created the soulslike genre. There wasn't really anything to compare it to. Returnal can be compared to any other bullethell game dating back to NES spaceship scrollers. Darksouls is difficult and Returnal is difficult but the similarities end there. Like, there's so many Bullethell games, it's its own genre. Clear room, dodge bullet patterns and restart the game when you die. That's the genre and Returnal is just a third person one that incorporated the genre into the plot.
ID: gwlrk9yI guess one could say we’re seeing the exposure of Rogue-likes happen in real time. Despite massive popularity, rogue-likes are still pretty niche, idk a lot of people irl or even online that have played Binding of Isaac, Risk of Rain 2, or any of the other rogue-likes. Those games can get pretty tough and it’s all about dying and starting over, but since Returnal is a lot of people’s first exposure to the genre at all you got people saying that it’s a soulsgame simply because it’s hard. Or people that don’t like the fact that you’re supposed to die.
ID: gwm3hxzHades was a massive success. And I know a lot of people who are just "casual gamers" who played and loved Hades.
If done right, Roguelike doesn't have to be a niche genre.
ID: gwls7mvWhat makes it even funnier is the fact that Returnal uses the roguelike genre as the focus of the story. Instead of the game just starting over it actually plays into the plot. The reception to Demons Souls ps3 was the same, with the added fact that it was completely new genre compared to the niche established roguelike/bullethell genres that Returnal is. Hopefully the game doesn't sour more people then pull in.
ID: gwlobvtAlso gives me DOOM vibes in terms of action level and pace
ID: gwloodnLittle bit of Metroid mixed in there as well.
ID: gwmzympNex Machina is a great shmup, I very much recommend it if you like the genre.
ID: gwm2q18Basically anything with rolls/dodging and boss fights is a lock for a Souls comparison
ID: gwlkw8qYeah, its nothing like Souls games lmao.
ID: gwoev7sThe majority of this sub prob hasnt even played Dark Souls. This place is anecdote and rhetoric city...
People read headlines and comments and absorb them as their opinion.
ID: gwlm32mIt's been funny reading the "this gen sucks if you're not a fan of soulslikes" comments
ID: gwmm1wzThere are no other games like this one, IMO. Not that I know of. It’s a bullet hell but there are none like this not even close.
ID: gwmvkgjIt's almost the opposite of a souls like lol
-
Honestly, Returnal is the Contra remake I have been waiting for since Shattered Soldier. Roguelike, not Roguelike. Who cares about labels? It’s fun!
-
These comments are great. Literally no one knows what the fuck they’re talking about
ID: gwmkudgIt’s incredible how many people seemingly spent 70 dollars without even knowing what a rogue lite is.
ID: gwmr3r9im confused, is that a bad thing?
ID: gwo1t92What does rogue like mean? First I'm hearing this term

I am just loving this game so much. I just beat the 3rd biome yesterday. This is the only game where I just love doing every single side objective. The only thing I skipped was the challenge room in biome 3 (that place is a little too nuts). The story is awesome too and it's finally starting to come together. In the middle of Act2, everything just clicked and I finally figured out selene's personal story (just a theory, but I'm pretty positive about it).
ID: gwm23giI accidentally went into that challenge room and barely made it out alive lol
ID: gwmkhvjThat challenge room ended me so fast haha then I watched maximiliandood play it and the same exact thing happened to him. Brutal ass flying robots lol
ID: gwmzl16I'd gotten a good uh.. Machine gun from 3rd biome with serrated and retarget. Made so short work of everything I encountered, challenge room included. Don't underestimate traits, folks!
ID: gwmb9oyHow can I identify the challenge rooms? This game is kicking my ass
ID: gwmc88qThe door has a big gold border on your map.
ID: gwmceliGolden door on the map edit - also the doors that you have to kill a creature on the door
-
I'm having the best damn time of my life with this game, can't put it down
ID: gwny0x0This is my favorite game since Bloodborne. The third boss was as mind-blowing as any I've ever seen.
ID: gwo5og7I just finished the third boss. Holy FUCK, what an absolute spectacle that was.
ID: gwp6biqI can’t even beat the first boss. Do permanent upgrades help a lot or do I just need to git gud? I’ve never really played bullet hells before.
The game is still an amazing experience though, even if I can only see one biome
ID: gwn4e2ySame. Just got to the 5th biome. It's probably the best PS5 game I've played so far.
-
It's a fucking banger. One of the best games I've ever played.
-
I must be doing something wrong. I have played for hours and have no idea where I am going or how to finish.
ID: gwlecvmThere is an orange objective on your map. Try to navigate through the rooms to get to it.
ID: gwotjywThanks it is starting to make sense now. Got to the first boss and died immediately. At least I know what I am looking for
ID: gwmigypOn your map pay attention to the shape of the doors. Squared doors are the main path. Triangular doors are side paths.
ID: gwlu50dI just wrote this elsewhere, but look for the light blue doorways on the map. They turn grey once you’ve entered them. I also wandered aimlessly for hours. Head in the direction of the orange objective marker if all else fails and it will lead you in the right compass direction at least. Once you unlock the melee item in the first biome, you’ll be able to bypass a lot of the first stage on future runs too.
ID: gwm1p47On the right side of the map is a legend and it’ll tell u which icons are which. The rectangle doors lead to the main objective and the triangle doors lead to just side rooms with loot, enemies, etc
ID: gwlth5kThere's a datababse, popup tutorials and video tutorials and an objective marker?
-
news flash, even after a few days of release, not even 1 single physical copy appeared in stores in my country , and that is just plain weird, and i ain't paying $77 for the digital copy , so i will wait , but man, this is some weird shit.....outriders came on time, everything comes on time, but when it is a game I want, it never comes on time....
ID: gwm39tgThe only store around me here in the US that even got one was Walmart, happened to be in there today and nabbed it. Can’t wait to try it later.
-
I’m going in blind asf. Never played roguelites or bullet hell games before. But the best games I ever played were games I went in completely blind. I never played soulsborne games before picking up Sekiro, but I enjoyed the novelty and stories so much that I have since platinumed Sekiro, Bloodborne and Demons’s Souls remake.
So let’s see if it clicks the same.
-
I’ve died 22 times and haven’t yet beat the first boss. Made it to the last health bar once. This game is HARD.
-
Well let me buy a ps5 and I get this game !!!!
-
I have been debating on whether or not I wanted to get this game and wanted to wait until reviews came out about it because, honestly, I’m still a little bummed about getting a game I’d been looking forward to and being really let down (I’m sure you can guess the game lol). What do you guys think? Is it fun? Should I get the game?
ID: gwml4xeIm about 10 hours in and barely made it to the second level after 8 hours. I think its hella fun.

And i loved Bloodborne to death.
