Ok so big opinion here, but Resident Evil 8 is my favorite Resident Evil. I’ve played all the games, and my favorite has always been 4, followed by 2. This game is everything I could have wanted. Also, it’s hands down the most beautiful horror game I’ve played visually. It’s got the scares of RE2, and I think the baby monster is the scariest part in the whole series. It’s got similar vibes and adventure themes to Re4, and the gameplay is addicting. Very happy with RE8, and excited for the future!
-
I am an absolute sucker for the eastern Europe cult castle shit, for this reason 4 and 8 are my favorites
ID: gy5gw0pID: gy5puxdYou’ll never guess where the game takes place
-
I'm excited as well, it's crazy how well RE is doing compared to other long running franchises. We're lucky.
ID: gy4buygIt's crazy how well RE is doing compared to early-to-mid 2010s RE
ID: gy4upktExactly, techniqually we've be getting an RE game consistently once a year since 2017 and they really haven't become boring at all
ID: gy46q3gI know right? There’s even a Netflix series on the way
ID: gy4jvroAs a Dragons Dogma fan, lemme tell you thats not a guaranteed good thing.
-
RE2MAKE for me but your opinion is respected
-
It's good but REmake will always be my favourite.
ID: gy5e199I mean, REmake is literally a masterpiece. Hard to top.
-
I think the best games are RE2/RE2R, RE4, and RE8 which has taken 7s place as being the 3rd best game in the series for me.
-
It’s certainly in the running for top 3 atleast. I’ll have to dwell on it a while before deciding a place though.
-
When talking about the best re it's usually between re2 or 4. But now I think Re8 will be up there and considered as one of the best. I could make arguments for all 3
There will be people who knock Re8 down for contradictive reasons. Just like those who hated on re7 for things re4 did as well, while praising re4.
I think it's too early to say for sure if it's the best but it is an awesome game.
ID: gy4eg8fYeah dude it’s definitely up there, not sure if it knocks Remake 2 of my top spot though I’ll need to play through it again.
ID: gy4eqplI think re2 has a very clear thing that can knock it down and that's the fact that the 2 campaigns really aren't different and therefore the B campaigns aren't different either. We got 1 campaign rehashed.
-
I dunno about that. If you said the first time play-through experience is the best in the series I would feel more confident agreeing. Playing multiple times though reveals a lot of little annoying problems.
RE3 for me personally is the best in the series because it stands up so darn well to multiple runs and seems almost designed from the start to accommodate weird little challenges.
ID: gy5b12kYeah the replay factor is something that needs to be considered, especially since RE games are very conducive to speedruns.
After my first run I immediately went in a replay, and shaved my playtime down by half (10 hours first run, 5 hours second run) and I was mostly just dicking around trying to unlock infinite ammo weapons.
Let me tell you: the Donna section does NOT retain its charm the second time around =|
ID: gy4lc62I was with you til you said RE3
ID: gy4lfxlI’ll admit to heavy nostalgia bias. It was my entry into the series.
-
Not accounting for the nostalgia virus i totally agree. I've got the n-virus hard for RE4, 2 and 1 but just held up against them i do think it's better.
-
Recency bias, its good game but RE2 is still the peak RE.
-
Game is absolutely gorgeous. I couldn't get over the visuals in 4k on a big screen tv with all the lights off. Felt very cinematic.
-
I wish the Dimitrescu castle part of the story was longer
-
It's really good. The game does a great job of not making a section overstay its welcome (the factory almost did but Ethan seemed self-aware that it was a lot of retreading haha), and Beneviento is going to be the standout memory everyone has of it.
That said, for definitive RE Survival Horror I still think RE1 remake and RE7 are the best in class. RE2make and RE8 are in the same camp for me (some survival horror elements, but action-y-er).
-
I'm in love with RE8 too. The story, the pacing, the symbolism and themes, and the overall atmosphere are amazing. Like it just feels super well crafted with great artistic vision.
-
I still prefer 4 as I am more of an action lover. But 8 is my second fav
-
The game isn't as scary compared to re2 and 7. The only two scenes that were genuinely scary were the baby scene and "look out the window", compare this to re2 where likers/Mr.x/Ivies giving you the creeps till the very last second of the game.
Lady D was also a massive disappointment, she is so slow that you don't even have to hold down shit to loop her around a table. In re2 you are forced to solve puzzles/fight likers/dodge zombies in tight dark hallways while Mr.X relentlessly chases you through the RPD. The lighten up castle makes it much less scarier and a few enemies in the courtyard is all we get with combination with her. The whole taking place during the daytime just doesn't make it scary as much.
I like how they brought back the sniper rifle and the duke is my favorite part of the game. His presence make the save room a much more safe and comfortable place to be in, but what bums me is that they got rid of the item box. Making the save room less essential.
ID: gy52ileI actually disagree here about Lady D. I found running around the castle started off really creepily, and having no idea when the girls or Lady D were gonna show up much more tense than anything RE2 did. Her slow moving worked with her daughters, two of the three scared the crap out of me because I was so focused on trying to find Lady D, that they snuck up on me. After the first introduction to Mr.X I found him less menacing and easier to kite around, since his move set was really limited and really once you clear the rooms he's no threat.
If it was just Lady D in that Castle though i'd 100% agree with your comparison. Though I will say, I still find Jack Baker the scariest of all the stalkers in RE. Something about that "Ethannnnn" will haunt my dreams.
ID: gy5ggy7Jack’s voice work was so good. “I’m gonna squash you like a bug! ...Hope Marguerite didn’t hear that.”
ID: gy49jh1What about the part when you go to east old town for the first time and the giant fucking wolf grabs you out of nowhere?
ID: gy4fiyaI didn't think the wolfs were that hot either. Basically toned down likers with much bulkier hp in my opinion .
You could be guns blazing like only 40feet away from it trying to take down a lycen and it won't react to you. The scary factor was much smaller since the wolf appears in broad day light and they are many ways to avoid it. The likers in the other hand you are forced to go right under it in front of the STARS office, and once your take out a zombie anywhere near it, they come at you full speed. Imagine if the castle courtyard had a wolfs in it and it and lady D chased you in to one of them. That's basically what happens in re2, multiple elements of the game combined together creating a distressing but memorable moment. I think the wolfs were a missed opportunity unlike the likers near perfect creation to execution process.

I'm new to the franchise and would say out of the 4 major recent releases, RE2 is my favorite. It struck a perfect balance between action, horror, set pieces and exploration where 7 and 3 didn't.
My favorite areas in RE8 by far are the village and castle, because they reward exploration, are spooky but not overwhelming, and don't throw a million monsters at you. The doll house was cool, but not what I expect when I purchase an RE game. It was straight ripped out of P.T and it's not replayable in the least. Also, Moureau's area is probably the least fun I've had in this franchise. Almost zero enemies, it's almost entirely outside so I miss that dopamine hit when I turn a room blue, and it's essentially one giant setpiece for an underwhelming character. The factory was fantastic though, so I wouldn't say the second half of the game is entirely disappointing.
Overall, Village is still a blast, but I'm not sure I'd call it the best and I haven't even played some of the most beloved titles in the franchise.

I feel like everyone saying the baby is the scariest in the series didn’t play RE7 (especially not in VR). RE7 in VR is by far the scariest the series has ever been, it was perfect. Also, the Evelyn mold house etc was really reminiscent of the baby house. RE8 was good but felt like a step backward in some ways from RE7.
ID: gy4z55jRE7 is the scariest game in the series overall but I do think the baby scene in 8 is the scariest single moment and scariest enemy in Resi history. If that was in VR....uh oh.
ID: gy5bgklRE8 is a lot funnier than RE7. I love Ethans attitude: he's been through this shit before and he's so god damn pissed off.
That does detract from any capacity for "scareyness" to be sure
but look. That first playthrough, when you don't know it's coming, and you don't know the mechanics it's working under... that baby got me good. I stopped being scared of it two seconds after escaping it up the elevator (I actually think it had a lot of Cuteness potential now) but in its moment it was horror gold.
ID: gy4o8wpEven without VR, RE7 is the scariest one by far. Probably my personal favourite too. The first 1/3 of the game in the Baker's house is the most memorable part of the entire series in my opinion. Only time I played a RE game and had to pause for a few seconds to regain my composure. (Specifically walking by Grandma in the wheelchair lol)
ID: gy55k6hYep, had to quit the game many times being too scared to continue, i think i even missed some parts of the story due to being too scared to explore.
-
Not the best one, but one of the best. I'm glad it fixed many of the problems i have with RE4. RE4 just isnt a fun game, its so annoying frustrating. But RE8 is fun and there are no section that annoy me.
My favorites are:
RE2 & Remake, RE1 Remake, RE8, RE3 & Remake,
ID: gy4a9zsObviously this is all opinion but I agree that 2/REmake 2 are the best still. However I would put 8 above REmake. What I loved about REmake was the creepy atmosphere in the mansion and Lisa Trevor's residence. I think House Beneviento, the village itself and Castle Dimitrescu are all extremely "creepy" and the story gives it the edge over 1, for me anyway.
-
Yeah RE8 is my favorite right now as well even after 5 playthroughs.
-
Not to mention it has - In my opinion - the only truly emotionally engaging plot in the franchise.
That's not a diss on the other games, because they weren't trying to evoke much emotion in the audience other than fear or thrills. Sure, there may be sad moments like Sherry's last moments with Annette, but when I think about "Resident Evil stories" I don't think about ugly crying.
RE8 definitely changed that, at least for me. I don't think an RE game has made me cry until now, and I have played all of them.
-
Nah bro, RE4 will forever be the best. RE8 is a close second tho.
ID: gy4af6zI think.... For the time of its release... I agree with you. From a nostalgia point if view, I agree with you. For everything that it was, I agree with you...
However, as of today, with the mechanics brought forth by RE2R, RE7, and RE8... I believe that RE8 is the superior game as a whole of encompassing what Resident Evil is at it's heart.
However, history will say for sure as time goes on. I love them all in their own ways, for their own reasons.
As such, if you were to ask me what's the best Resident Evil, my answer is, "Depends what you are looking for".
ID: gy45luxRE4 will forever be the most overrated game in the Series. But maybe a Remake can fix all the problems with the game.....
-
Cyberpunk and COD need to take notes on how to release a game properly
-
There is no RE game that can surpass 4. There will never be
-
Did I write this? I have the exact same opinion!
-
I think the story lets it down a bit but it is still fantastic.
-
I'm not really a huge first person horror fan so I didn't enjoy 7 as much as most people. I hope I enjoy 8 as much as most others seem to be. 🙂 I've been busy preparing for WoW TBC classic lately otherwise I would be playing Village. Maybe I'll buy it as a birthday present for myself tommorrow.
-
Haha I'll just put this here since I haven't seen anyone else say it.
RE5 is my favorite I love it.
-
I like it a lot (almost done with my 3rd playthrough) but I’d personally slot it behind 2 & 3 remakes and 4.
-
Has DLC been confirmed?
I would have loved to see more of the first setting and I think we all thought it would have been a lot more set there.
It will be a shame if we potentially have to wait another 4 years for RE9 (obviously I don’t want them to rush it).
-
I know definitely my favorite of the series too, I really like the direction they went with this game! I really hope it's in nominees for goty bc it really deserves it!
-
I love 8 but I don’t think it can quite topple RE4 for me, there’s just more interesting upgrades/weapons in re4. More overall encounters/enemy variants & just longe
content. Especially if you add in separate ways. That being said, I still haven’t played village of shadows yet on Re8 and am throughly enjoying the unlocks & encounters. Beam saber hell yes.
-
Village definitely ups the ante on the story. I've always found the characters and lore really interesting in RE, but this is the first time I've actually really felt something when certain things have happened to certain characters.
RE2make also started getting there by deepening the Annette/Sherry storyline, but Village does it best.
Plus, the aesthetic is incredible and like a lot of others I'm a total sucker for the whole creepy folkloric vibe. I love how they managed to introduce vampires and werewolves but explain it in a way that fits in with the existing lore too, not to mention how they ended up looping back to the very first game with some of the lore near the end.
-
it's my third fav after REmake and 4 i think. but not sure, i'll have to give it several more plays till i know if it sits under 2 or 3 or 7 but i'm pretty sure it's got them beat. but yeah no way it beats REmake or 4 for me those games are just perfect.
-
Definitely top 5 for me.
-
you lost me when you said 2 is scary. things that have the same agility as a turtle don't exactly scare.
-
I’m just having so much FUN with a video game. Shocking concept
Guys I’m being sincere I really love the game lol
-
It was fun but it doesn’t compare to REmake for GameCube.

Gives me a Transylvania vibe for sure
