So, I just played both games, and I gotta say re7 is a lot scarier than re8. The bakers, (especially jack) really freaked me out, and made me wanna go cry in the corner. Whereas re8 is a lot more actiony (except for the beneviento house, that place is scary and sucks) and beautiful. What do u guys think?

I’d say it’s because the Bakers were normal people and more reality grounded so it’s easier for our minds to process this as genuine fear than fictional fear. I mean c’mon, a tall vampire and talking doll? Plus the 4 Lords all somewhat had elegance, personality, and mannerism whereas the Bakers were just nuts.

ID: gympqcf"Everyday it's the saaaame thing"
ID: gymnx6kExactly! The original resident evils were so scary due in part to seemingly normal things turned into monsters. We see the vestiges of humanity within the dead eyes of zombies and ganados and bakers. It’s right in the franchise title!

I really think Dimitrescu could have been a lot scarier if their had been more emphasis on backtracking in the castle. By the time you got her stalking you you were practically done the whole place, more puzzles and returning to older rooms with her and newly spawned in ghouls could have been so good. I never felt like she interfered with me really like jack or mr x
ID: gym34pwYou have to get the masks while she stalks. That's the majority of the Castle.
ID: gymh1kkShe's stalking you around a giant castle with plenty of room to just walk around her and it's also much more obvious what rooms she can't come in to. Jack often was encountered in cramped hallways and and only had the one save room he didn't come in if I remember correctly.
ID: gylzgz3Jack didn’t do much stalking tbh. Only thing that he stops you from is getting the shotgun. Other than that you can get by only seeing him after you grab the shadow puzzle piece from the bathtub
ID: gymt2swThe devs should have cut half the shitty factory segment and given it to expand the castle and the village. I would have also liked to have seen more of Beneviento Manor since the majority of it is locked off. Maybe also some more expansion of fishboi's outskirts and clinic area or the lycan stronghold which ended too fast. Really though they dedicated way too much of the game to that tedious factory segment.

Well, I mean 7 takes itself alot more seriously than 8. I feel like 7 tried to be a serious horror fest while 8 was scary but also more willing to embrace the absurdity of the RE franchise
ID: gylxl5pI agree, re8 tried to be cautious in jump scares and scariness, whereas 7 was straight up: oh you think it’s over? WELL FUCK YOU
ID: gylzb93Not cautious i think, just a different kind of horror. 7 was michael meyers while 8 was cabin in the woods
ID: gylz4x1Idk the fact that I get to chainsaw fight a mutated redneck isn’t that serious
ID: gym057hChainsaw a redneck vs fear boner from the 9ft tall vampire lady while the fly girls watch from the corner as the fish man pukes his guts up.
different levels of absurdity my man
ID: gymi3z3I'd just say Marguerite was. Jack was scary up until the chainsaw fight and even his big boi form was just freaky but not out of place for RE. Lucas wasn't scary at all, the situations he put you in were, but I just found him to be a twat
Marguerite was spooky all the way through which is why she has the best boss fight
-
Supposedly Capcom intentionally avoided making RE8 "too" scary, so I personally couldn't fault them on that aspect. This is just hearsay, so don't take my word on it, but supposedly sales weren't as high as they could've been and fewer people purchased the game because it was too scary. I can honestly believe that, but just take it as me speaking out of my ass because it's only hearsay.
In any case, I did like the Baker family as antagonists a lot more than Miranda's four lords. I'd rank the Bakers as Jack > Lucas (esp. because of DLC) > Marguerite in terms of how much I like them as antagonists. I miss Jack; wish/hope he isn't dead.
ID: gymnqy7Maybe its recency bias but I felt more scared in Beneviento’s basement than any point in another RE.
ID: gymm26tI'm glad they did that, i don't care about scary or not but i find the being chased by an unstoppable force gameplay very boring.
-
I was pretty disappointed how underdeveloped the lords were compared to the Bakers, honestly. The pacing also felt a lot better to me personally--you really felt something (relief? Pride? Not sure how to word it exactly) when scratching each Baker off the list, yet for the lords, which really would have benefitted more from said feeling, was instead a "well I guess that's done then"

RE8 is a cartoon theme park. Fun game nonetheless.
ID: gymh9vdThe first hour and a half of Village was such an insane roller coaster to play the first time around. Loved every second of it even if it wasn’t as spooky as RE7’s intro sequence.
-
It's far more important for an RE game to be fun and replayable, over being scary.
ID: gymk1chIt being scary is what makes it fun to some people 🙂
-
The bakers are scary until you fight them. Except the old lady. She was insanely scary in VR
-
I found the stalking baby bit pretty creepy
-
The scarier, this was probably by purpose.
About harder I heavily disagree.
-
Probably an unpopular opinion but still ... I feel like Jack and the other Bakers were really boring design wise.
Don’t get me wrong. I love RE7 and I love how scary it is.
But the normal looking enemies aren’t something I’m excited for in RE franchise. I love the absurdity and craziness that the series is known for, so a tall vampire lady, a tyrant with a rocket launcher, a guy who can control metal, a creature with brain and tongue popping out ... are all more interesting.
-
I think RE7 is a lot scarier overall, yes. It focuses more on horror. RE8 is a more varied game, with both horror and action.
Also that one part of RE8 was way scarier than anything in RE7 to me.
-
That was on purpose unfortunately because to many pussies complained about RE7 being to hard and scary. You know the ones who only just got into the series and never played the originals. Makes me sick honestly
ID: gylym6pDid you know that 10% of RE7 steam user did not even go to fight Mia in the first house? Look at the steam success, this game is way underplay and deserve largely better. RE7 was the shit.
ID: gym5nk1Are you serious? Wow..
ID: gyludwoIf you're talking about that one article, that was another one of thoses cases of badly translated japanese interview that was ran by the games media anyway.
ID: gylvc20Pretty sure devs said that it was a conscious choice
ID: gym2cnhHonestly felt like RE7 was too heavy on the Saw type horror of straight up gross/deranged and weird, not the classic horror of the older games.
ID: gym5skeI can see that point of view as well. 7 to me felt like playing 1 again as a kid
ID: gym38b3It's just cause Capcom likes injecting action into the series to make it more fun, accessible, and to add more variety.
ID: gym60k5Not to be a dick but why not make a sub series game for that then? Like I’ve always thought a Joe game would be sick. I don’t really like the super action stuff in mainline. Don’t get me wrong though 8 is fantastic
ID: gylw6aaReally? It makes you sick?
Try to sell a product that only caters to a small portion of the consumer base and try to stay in business.
They can either make something scary enough to appease you or they can try to sell more product by toning it down a bit.
If you want scarier, go watch/read some true crime stuff. Games should not be traumatizing.
As far as I can tell the "not scary enough" crowd are just trying to posture and act brave. It's the same mentality as people who brag about eating really spicy food. A burning sensation in your mouth is not a flavor. No one is impressed by your thresholds. Now go practice how long you can stay under water.
ID: gylwxw4This is a post by someone with an inferiority complex. God forbid we expect a series that popularized survival horror to actually be scary. Oh the audacity.
Also, your analogy makes no sense. Lol.
ID: gym5f53You’re such a bitch dude. I don’t have to explain shit. Two, the majority of people who love the series and what it to maintain scary stuff is bigger than the pussies that get to scared you asshat. I’m 25. Been playing these games for years and have bought every single one.
ID: gym4vxwLmao seriously. I love RE7 and Village. I think Village was at least scary and gets your adrenaline going. RE6 and 5, I’ve never even finished. Just terrible
ID: gym9ui1Right?
-
Yeah, while 8 isn't terrible, it's definitely a disappointment. Still better than 5 or 6 though.
ID: gymoe6vYeah, I thought it was more fan service, builds off two popular characters, explains umbrella's creation, and creates a new character. It's still fun I guess, but Resident Evil is supposed to be survival horror, not a loot em and shoot em.
ID: gymokr7Thank you. Not a bad game by any means but the villains were done a disservice by being underdeveloped and underutilized, the dialogue was corny and damn it, it wasn't scary.
ID: gylttauRest assured you are quite alone in this assumption lmao
But hey, it sort of sounded cool I guess
ID: gylv2xzHe’s not alone, I thought the game was an unoriginal mess.
Also why can’t we get ink ribbons on hardcore mode?
ID: gylu2epYou don't know what an assumption is.
I'm not. You can find plenty of criticism of the game if you escape your echo chambers.
Sorry my opinion bothers you.

Man your talking fax. Four lords were like, obvious straight up fantasy shit, while the bakers were inhuman and nuts for sure. Plus jack STILL scares the crap out of me with his dialogues
