Codemasters puts mental health awareness ads in Dirt 5, GRID and more

That is nice. Too bad Dirt 5 crashes after every race so I can't even see ads.

ID: gq1ygjn

Why is it so terribly optimized on pc 🙁 it takes like 2 minutes to launch and I can't use a controller unless it's plugged into the pc

ID: gq72t1x

This seems detrimental to our psychological well-being, and should be addressed.

A lot of games already have advertising in them, at least this one has a positive message. But I don't see players paying attention to the roadside advertising in a racing game. The advertisements in real life are for the audience, not the drivers.

People should take care of their mental health, especially now people locked at home and isolated. I still don't see it taken seriously enough.

ID: gq1m84i

Might just be me but driving by you definitely read them. The ads don't always work to get me to buy something, but I do read what the banners say - it's just a natural human reaction to a colourful thing standing out with text.

ID: gq0phr1

Having a bad covid sleep schedule really fucked me up. 8 hours a day and being awake when the sun is up really makes a world of difference.

ID: gq06hdl

They put these ads in their games so there could be articles titled "good guy Codemasters puts mental health ads in their games". That's the only reason. They don't care if anyone can read them.

ID: gq7dqtc

How do you take care of your mental health?

4 : Anonymous2021/03/07 02:25 ID: gq22a55

Real ads should not be in fully paid for games.

ID: gq3ackw

spot on, but a lot of games (fifa for example) already have advertising in them. at least this one has a positive message and isnt adversiting a product or a brand!

ID: gq274ke

Tell that to Fifa and NBA. They have literal in game ads. Everything just to make a quick buck for them.

ID: gq3fm87

Sure they should. And you should choose not to buy it if it bothers you.

5 : Anonymous2021/03/06 16:20 ID: gpz54o2

These types of ads in racing games don't bother me. There are ads over every bridge and track wall in real life so it looks normal in the game.

Monster energy in Death Stranding and other shit like it? Might sound funny but that was the reason I didn't buy the game. I only play single player narrative focused games and if there is something I find breaks immersion then I simply can't get into the game, and Monster killed it for me before I could even click buy.

ID: gpzbx31

Death Stranding is weird enough that Monster Energy doesn't break immersion. It's very meta too - so in a way the opposite of immersive.

ID: gq078i4

Kojima and doing random meta ads in games is a thing that goes WAAAAY back in the MGS series.

ID: gq18noz

Didn't really break the "immersion". I guess if you never drink or take a shower you will miss the only two ad placements in the game. Though I've always founds ads to fit into a futuristic dystopian world.

Yes it's funny

ID: gq33gfq

That's pretty normal in Japanese games, honestly. Many of them get ad placements that work with the game.

Like Yakuza has excellent product placements. All things you'd normal eat, all the places you'd buy stuff from, etc etc.

I've been wondering about codemasters for a while. 3 straight bad mainline releases that converted simcade to just arcade (Project Community Assisted Racing Simulator 3 took out pitstops, fuel, and I believe even tyre wear!!!!), and sold poorly (Like, Dirt 5 you couldn't even find multiplayer matches after a week post launch), and a mobile racing game in which you cannot steer the car (despite not being a drag racing game, like, it has circuits), just before a buyout.

Maybe I need to adjust my tinfoil hat but it makes this move seem like more than just a good pr gesture.

7 : Anonymous2021/03/07 04:31 ID: gq2eih8

Better than the Dirt 5 ads in Rally 2.0...

8 : Anonymous2021/03/07 01:16 ID: gq1ve80

They should be in gacha games instead

9 : Anonymous2021/03/06 19:16 ID: gq00kpl

Yet more cringe from corporations who don't care about you but have to fulfill a PR quota.

ID: gq1wqe2

Yeah I don't think it's a coincidence that this happened right after they got bought out by a corporate monolith, so they're doing corporatey things.

ID: gq0chkz

What’s a PR quota?

ID: gq2544w

Who cares if it's pr quota? If it helps just one person struggling, is that not a positive? I think we should encourage the spread of a healthy message, regardless of whom the messenger is or the underlying reason

10 : Anonymous2021/03/07 02:26 ID: gq22dmh

Games gonna gam.. psychology? Huh. The world really has gone mad.

11 : Anonymous2021/03/06 18:47 ID: gpzv3xu

This is how advertising should be handled in-game. Not forced down your throat during loads screens, or shameless product placement like in Death Stranding.

ID: gq0it2m

I disagree. There never should be any ads in a paid product. If they want money from ads, make it free. This is just double charging in a sneaky way.

ID: gq22g1l

I'm totally with real products and ads in game. My issue is when it's one thing, everywhere. For instance if Coke wanted to sponsor all the drinks in game, if every can, every billboard, every poster was Coke, it would piss me off. Now mix that up with all the products found here and we've got a better, more realistic world:

ID: gq249dn

Depends how much the ad costs

ID: gq26k0t

This isn't advertising, it's getting media attention for your game. It's just a publicity stunt to try and raise awareness to Dirt. Companies in reality could care less about you.

12 : Anonymous2021/03/07 06:01 ID: gq2mlxf

Hey it's better than Runescape that will auto log you off after playing for 6 hours for the sake of your mental health while also using just about every psychological exploitation in the book to get you to spend more money.

13 : Anonymous2021/03/07 01:30 ID: gq1wr63

The last thing I want is reality dragged into my video game downtime. Parodying reality, sure that's fun. But seeing an ad on coping with depression would drag me right back to reality and kill any escapism the game had.

14 : Anonymous2021/03/07 03:10 ID: gq26qmc

This is just a PR Stunt to get clicks, nothing more. Companies don't give a shit about you, and this is just a ploy to drag attention to their games. This has nothing to do with mental health, it's Marketing.

15 : Anonymous2021/03/07 04:32 ID: gq2en0c

So can I download Grid from steam again? I love the game but last I knew you can’t get it anymore and I uninstalled it

ID: gq36kac

If you have the original GRID on your steam account then you can still download and play it but this article is talking about the reboot GRID(2019).

16 : Anonymous2021/03/07 11:04 ID: gq35xx2

yikes

17 : Anonymous2021/03/08 03:33 ID: gq69ha7

Straight out of THX 1138. Ask you if you're ok so many times you begin to question your own sanity.

18 : Anonymous2021/03/07 15:05 ID: gq3ohsz

This is just fantastic. Mental health isn’t given enough focus and is still stigmatized in a lot of places.

ID: gq4ft5m

The areas that need this the most probably aren't playing Dirt 5

19 : Anonymous2021/03/07 23:32 ID: gq5je5k

This subreddit has some of the stupidest takes I’ve ever seen sometimes. These comments are wild. Think before you type. Of all things, people are finding reasons to complain about an objectively good gesture. Jesus, see y’all on SRD again.

20 : Anonymous2021/03/06 21:52 ID: gq0vlni

nice exactly what I wanted ... government messaging in games. lol piss off.

ID: gq1mhzp

Government messaging? You mean the national health service messaging? Do you think the NHS is spreading anything other than health advice lol?

ID: gq1js1r

Pretty soon we'll see election campaign ads in game

21 : Anonymous2021/03/07 03:53 ID: gq2axc9

As much as I hate in-game ads, I can actually get behind these kinds of ads, or PSAs

ID: gq2ecxi

I really agree.

22 : Anonymous2021/03/07 02:47 ID: gq24igq

Jesus, can't fathom the mental gymnastics done by some that are trying to argue this is a negative.

ID: gq2mlop

I don’t think anyone’s debating the need for discussing these issues, or that it’s negative; simply that it’s a cynical corporate decision for brownie points.

Programer: Boss, our game sales increased three fold and...

Boss: Threefold, good good...

Programer: our games' play time increased by 15000 percent.

Boss: Good god...

Programer: I think it's the covid. Everyone is on depression because of the isolation.

Boss: Let me think...
