If this is entry-level effort for Risk, I'm wondering what's coming when they move on to Axis and Allies.

ID: h0u2un0Axis and allies while sometimes fun to play is fatally flawed. The axis can almost never win.
ID: h0u4ihpDepends on the version. In competition play of the anniversary edition the allies are actually at a disadvantage and who plays what side is determined by bidding on how many extra IPC the USSR gets.
ID: h0u55r8My kids and I got into Axis and Allies and Zombies last year. Really changed the stale dynamic we had settled into.

Seriously, look into recent WW2 history books, it's just embarrassing that it took so long to defeat them.
Of course, the problem with realistic games is that they're usually not going to be fun or balanced precisely because of the realism.

We did this for Diplomacy. Worked well since every person represents a nation.
ID: h0u3youIt also works well because Diplomacy is a fun game, rather than dice rolling for several hours.
ID: h0ug4mqThe game of risk is an inverse bell curve. The beginning has lots of rolling, then an hour of everybody stockpiling, then hours of huge armies sweeping the map just to be counterswept by the other big armies. If you’re lucky, the game ends there. If you’re not lucky, there are still two players, both with about half the board but no sizable army, and the game continues for another 2 hours with just two players.

LPT: Don't play Risk with Civ players.

ID: h0uhc8hYou need better competition then. There is enough randomness that even with perfect play and risk assessment you can still lose although maybe your playing risk against ai which in some cases can be consistently predicted/manipulated. Either way you need better competitors.

I made this ridiculous, over-the-top "RISK CHAMPION" (front, back, and down both sleeves) shirt for the current winner to wear...of course some asshole stole it.

Played Axis and Allies with friends in high-school. We all had corners, but my buddy when he played Germany... well, he busted out some authentic WWII Nazi shit his grandpa brought back with him, including a flag and hand gun. Always felt uncomfortable being in a room with a genuine nazi flag on display.

I actually have ran a couple of D&D and WoD games I dubbed "hat games" as each of my players was encouraged to wear at least one article of clothing their character wears, but most of the time people wore hats as their piece, hence hat games. Was a ton of fun and helped with immersion too.

I'm choosing to believe that this wasn't planned further than "come over for risk".
This group of friends each are just that close and hilarious that the each came up with this idea on their own and showed up in different costumes.

That doesn't look like the old risk board with the small - medium - large sized shapes as armies. Still the best version to this day.
