- Doom Eternal's Ray Tracing Upgrade Analysed - Best PC Settings + PS5/Series X Comparisons

This stuff is interesting but I can't believe anyone sees these differences in actual gameplay. Game is too fast.
ID: h3y89ltID: h3ytt1mPs5 upgrade has 120fps mode?
ID: h3yxxia120fps mode is heaven
ID: h3y960eThe human eye can only see 24fps
ID: h3zh6zaI just played it on 120fps mode yesterday (PS5 / LG CX). I've never played a game at 120fps before. It was interesting. The controls felt more accurate, but also, all movement felt faster, like the game had been sped up. Is that to be expected? Why would the game seem faster? I thought it would just be smoother.
As to smoothness, if anything I thought it felt slightly choppy, but the speed of movement more than made up for that. Overall I can't decide what I prefer between 120fps and balance mode.
ID: h3ylnxjObviously you’re not going to see them while I’m the middle of combat, but the game isn’t 100% combat
ID: h3y85aiYeah most of the time when DF wants to make a point they use a 400 percent static zoom which is well beyond what anyone will notice in real time. The only difference anyone will actually notice is in framerate.
ID: h3yegpbDepends on where you are watching the video. You may not see the difference on your mobile phone, difference get more obvious as the screen gets larger.
Phone vs big TV is like 1600% inherent zoom.
ID: h3zvshpYeah even in Cyberpunk the pace was waaay too fast for me to appreciate RT. I just turned it off and nearly doubled my fps (played on PC).
I honestly don't see RT as being something to get excited about. Maybe some puzzle game will make clever use of RT reflections as an integral part of gameplay, but for pretty much anything else it's really difficult to notice.
ID: h4089xmCyberpunk is not all shooting like doom though. There are many places where you can really appreciate the amazing graphics.
ID: h3yg41hI can't believe people don't. You have eyes, right?
ID: h3ygdr1You really gonna tell me you can notice variable rate shading on rock fracture lines and whether a surface has a 1:3 or 1:4 reflection while you're ripping through hell?

ID: h3yzigpI love the feel RT gives Doom. The environments have always been ’shiny’ but with RT it’s actually true instead of just textured in
ID: h40029cYeah I complained when it launched because I saw zero difference on the first level. But once you go to the ship or literally any other level with metallic or glass surfaces the RT is immediately obvious and looks amazing.

This is predominantly a PC optimisation video. Are there any videos out there detailing the ray tracing differences on consoles?
ID: h3y97m4RT settings are identical, the PS5 has slightly better texture quality because it doesn't use VRS, and the Xbox has a higher resolution in 120fps mode and a slightly more stable framerate in fidelity mode.
That's about it I think.
ID: h3yh1mrDoes PS5 hardware even support VRS tho?
ID: h3ya8u6He mentioned that PS5 and Series X is using around Medium RT when compared to PC.
ID: h3yajoeBut terrible AF for some reason? It makes no sense lol
Edit: it has to be the ram pool limiting the texture quality. Right? Why else?

DLSS looks amazing in this game.
-
Wow, DLSS is black magic. An internal resolution of 900p with DLSS ends up looking the same or even slightly better than the native 1800p on consoles. I wish AMD could have done something like DLSS within the past couple of years. This makes me even more excited for when a new Switch comes out. We could legitimately have close to 4k resolutions on games running on a portable console docked.
ID: h3z8tp0DLSS requires extra silicone.
ID: h3zeqikThat’s why DLSS is the tits.
ID: h3za2ycOk? And the next Switch may have it.
ID: h3z9vhpIt’s because AMD has no tensor core alternative (hardware level AI). It’s the reason why DLSS is so great. AMDs FidelityFX is software based.
If anything, apple is more positioned to compete with Nvidia if they really pushed to enter the gaming segment as their later ARM processors have neural engines for hardware based AI.
ID: h3zewv7It’s very surprising that Apple hasn’t gone after the Nintendo Switch market, with some sort of first party controller attachment. I think Apple just doesn’t care that much about games.
Edit: typo
ID: h3zhl98hardware based AI lol.. jeez folks spill the most uttter bullshit around here. You have zero absolute zero knowledge what the fuck you are talking about. Everything runs on hardware. DLSS 2.0 still runs a chunk of their "software" on the shaders and shifted the matrix calculation onto the specific tensor cores for exactly that tensor calculations. There is no fucking AI hardware. Its all software running on different parts of a GPUs hardware. The same is true for FFX just that its an upscaler not an image reconstruction algo. So much PR bullshit spilling nonsense here. The "AI" is who came up with part of the software that is running on the gpu to say in laymens terms.
-
Why can't all games be as well optimised as Doom Eternal?
ID: h40xuuvIt runs on an in house id tech 7 engine. Normally games run great on an engine that the developers are very familiar with and was build in house.
-
900p DLSSd to 1800p looks better than native 1800p on consoles. That is insane.
ID: h3z1dzdI watched their DLSS video using Control as an example I think last year, or whenever that video came out. It is absolutely insane how well it works. And I'm a PS5 guy but couldn't care less, I love that DLSS exists. They did an extreme test just for the hell of it and ran Control at 480 with DLSS and I think upscaled it to maybe even 4k? And it looked....absolutely fine. But definitely, DLSS can take a 1080 image and make it 4k near enough flawlessly.
Must be amazing for PC gamers. To be able to jump from 1080 to 4k at the flick of a switch
ID: h3z8m40It makes me excited for the next Switch. It is most likely going to be have DLSS as it is an nvidia based console. We could get close to 4k image quality on games on a portable console. That is insane.
-
I played it on 120fps and it felt great, but I prefer how it looks at 4K 60fps.
-
I wish I were good enough at this game to notice any of this detail as I try hard to not die
-
We get it, there's RT gi and reflections now. Can we please, for fuck's sake, dial down the reflections? I don't know in which reality people live, but cement and other materials don't produce mirror like reflections. Yes, difuse reflections are more expensive but as is, it's deep into uncanny valley territory. Same with transparent surfaces, there needs to be a gradient where outside is much darker than inside so the glass is fully reflective, otherwise a transparency in the reflection is at hand. And let's not mention the lack of smoke reflections... This is really uncanny valley stuff.
ID: h40kzvtI thought that when I saw the trailer, it’s kinda comical. They can get away with it for DOOM tho, they’re obviously not going for realism. Plus there’s that many particles and special effects that I think it works
But definitely with other games and going forward, I really don’t want every surface to just be a mirror. The novelty of “wow shiny” I think has worn off for people now, I’d like it used more tactfully too
ID: h40zp5p100000%. It so stupid in Re8 that bricks are wet and shiny lol. I’m so sick of everything being reflective.
-
I beat the game earlier this year on PS5, and almost wish I waited for the 120fps mode. I tried it yesterday, and it makes a big difference in fluidity of combat.
-
Is there a TLDW version available?
ID: h3ywm7xPC looks crisper, has better Ray Tracing.
Even with the lowest end RTX card.
-
The final Doom on Playstation...
ID: h3ygsnaHere you are again saying the same thing on a ps4/5 doom post.
ID: h3y9shx[deleted]
ID: h3yfyp8Yeah I’ve noticed it too
ID: h3y8d21I don't think there'll be another DOOM for quite a while, the saga reached a satisfying conclusion in Ancient Gods 2. So it's not a huge miss really.
ID: h3y9asxBut they're about to do Quake...
ID: h3y88jdFeelsbad the games were amazing. Hopefully when the next game comes out more people will have access to xcloud so you don’t have to buy a whole new console just to play it.
-
Sure wish I could download the upgrade, but I guess having the disc version doesn't cut it...
-
It's too bad ultraviolence and nightmare modes are practically impossible to play on a controller without back buttons.
-
Recommend using bumper jumper tactical configuration. L1 for jump, R3 for boost/slide. Your thumbs never leave the sticks during mobility.
I think I mapped the fire breath to X, weapon switching to Triangle, melee to Circle. Call of duty also plays great like this.
Only issue is you have to adjust grip - index fingers on bumpers with middle fingers on triggers. It’s comfortable on the Dualsense but horrible on the base Xbox controllers.
-
Fuck using R3 that much, I eant my controller to last the entire playthrough lol.
-
I'm literally halfway through the campaign on Nightmare on controller, sure it's hard, but not supposed to be a baby game lmao. It's no where near the difficulty of GMGOW or any of the Soulsbourne games. As long as you keep moving and use your nades/beltch/glory kills effectively you can survive anything.
Edit: and choose the right weapon for each Demon obviously.
-
Eh I am quite good with FPS, and I fight Nightmare Doom to be waaaaaaaay harder than any Soulsborne.
Actually I never found any Soulsborne hard, except for some gank bosses (ornstein and smough? And Rom the Vacuous Spider), dark places or shit areas like DS3 poison swamp.
Doom on nightmare? All hard all time, and only gets harder.
-
No, I get that it's not impossible but I don't have enough faith in myself to do it. Nor the patience. The whole time I'm playing, I miss the back button attachment. Like, constantly. It's one of those things where you miss something you once had.
If I can get myself a third party controller at some point, I'll be stoked to play it on Nightmare. Gotta pick up all the secrets I've missed, anyway. Until then, default difficulty it is.
I'm still having fun, though. But as someone who played the first few levels last year with the back button attachment, the difference is pretty damn big.
-
Thats the reason I want motion aiming support.
Far more faster and accurate than thumbsticks + you could actually aim while jumping. And the best thing is you don’t need any additional attachments to your dualshock.
-
That’s actually a pretty genius solution. It might take some getting used to but the extra buttons could be invaluable.
-
I hope it's a standard option one day. It takes some getting acclimated to, for sure, but once it clicks, it's really hard to go back. I feel handicapped in games that don't have it cause it feels clunky trying to aim with my thumb now.
-
What lmao, I beat Doom Eternal with a base Xbox controller on ultra violence and whilst challenging, is nowhere even close to “impossible”. Come on dude, believe in yourself haha
-
Duuude, I'm over 40 and if I wanna play without back buttons on hard mode, I gotta be well rested and over caffeinated. That doesn't happen often enough. But I did play some ultraviolence today at 120hz and it was doable. But I prefer the RT mode.
-
Beat the whole game plus dlc on nightmare. It takes a few levels to get used to it, but it’s really quite doable on a controller. The big thing is remapping buttons and setting up sensitivity in a way that makes sense to you.
-
Thank god for the elite controller on Xbox
-
Ive had no issues with Nightmare. I mean obviously ive had to get better and die a lot but it would be no difference with the back buttons in that sense.
-
I played through Ultra Violence on PS4 Pro, it's extremely playable and felt like how the game was intended to be played imo.
-
What's everyone's Fov at?
The default says its 90 but doesn't look like it to me for some reason. Going all the way up starts to look like a fish eye lens
-
Doom Eternals graphics looks very dated. Even in the new next gen patch for PS5.
Especially the very low texture quality looks very bad.
The gameworld is very small and not very much is hapening on the screen. So I would have expected better graphics, but Iam probably spoiled by playing all the fantastic Playstation games on my PS5.
I play on a 65” OLED tv.
-
Lol what in the world are you even looking at?
This is one of the best looking next gen games post patch
-
On PC maybe.
Not on PS5.
Have you seen the low texture quality?

Well there's always the 120fps mode!
