- How to treat priceless hairlooms in RPGs [x-post from /]

Nah, true G’s put it on display in your Vineyard in Toussaint.
ID: h58qx1nID: h59dppxAbsolutely. I could have used a few more display cases though. My sword collection was...extensive.
ID: h58rrxzthis
ID: h58quigI have every complete Grandmaster set on display and you want me to display... this lvl 17 piece of crap?
ID: h58qzdsThe classic “IT’S A GIFT YOU HAVE TO WEAR IT” situation.
ID: h58uvnuThe toussaint Knight's sword is the only worthy sword to be hung in Corvo Bianco Vineyard
ID: h5927b7Yeah, I never used it because by the time I got it I was overleveled, but I kept it because it was a cool and unique sword. In fact, pretty sure I kept almost all of my unique weapons.
If memory serves, it wasn’t even worth all that much if you tried to sell it.
ID: h59ef2mA true master takes the painting from Olgierd's manor: 'Portrait of Iris and Olgierd' and hangs it up with Oldierd's saber underneath.
Poor Iris. She deserved so much better; ''I am sadness''. They really made a great DLC with compelling characters.
ID: h590pgqTrue but Blood and Wine was not out yet when a lot of us finished this quest, and also there was no stash yet either. What else can you do? XD
ID: h59b5pdWasn't Yen's room at Kaer Trolde have stash chest?

I found myself only ever using the craftable witcher set gear.
Wish there was an option to let the family heirlooms stay with their families.
ID: h585c5dAerondight is pretty worthwhile but it takes a long time to get and is basically the only non-witcher item that’s worth it
ID: h58i9gbOlgierd's sword was great.
ID: h58mdnkI was so annoyed by how bad the loot leveling situation was in The Witcher 3 that I had to install a mod to improve the level of loot drops. It was alright, but there were still only a handful of non-Witcher items I ended up using for any length of time.
ID: h58v8l8maybe it's like
"Oh shit I don't have enough money to pay the Witcher!" finds a shite sword in the cellar**
later
"Here's your reward, Witcher. Our most treasured family heirloom. Definitely worth a lot of value cough* to our hearts."*
ID: h580chvor a display type residence to put up all rare and unique items... for the collectors out there
ID: h583yr4I thought there was in Blood and Wine

There should be side quest where one of those schmucks confronts you later because they found the sword for sale in a thrift store junk bin. They attack you in anger, then quickly are slain and they die in a pool of their own hubris.
ID: h57yllcAnd their dying breath is asking you to have the decency to give the sword back to their family, which sends you on a scavenger hunt where you eventually find it being put to use by a young soldier who knows nothing about it's history. And you have to decide whether to take it from them or let them keep it.
ID: h582o2yTheir dying breath...is to ask Geralt would he like to play a game of Gwent.
ID: h58iwm5So you kill them, take it and sell it again. Win-win-win again.
ID: h58vjh2Dragon Age 2 you can gift Aveline with a shield and depending on what you did with her dead husband's level 1 shit shield she started with she can have some cross words for you
ID: h596phcAs I recall she gets mad at you even if you’ve kept the piece of crap locked up in storage this whole time.
ID: h58femzDragon Age Origins had a quest where you can sell the reward sword and specifically have dialogue to give the gold from it to the family.
ID: h58rqkaI especially like it how you can run around half of Ferelden to find Asala for Sten, then sell it for 70 silver and he doesn't try to murder you.
ID: h58bggbwould be cool if they trained to take a witcher down and gave Geralt a run for his money. maybe the only way to kill the attacker is to evade them till you find the sword again through a chain or searching and eavesdropping cause they placed some kinda protection on them that makes it so only their family weapons can hurt them till they've gotten revenge
ID: h58s0h5A regular person take down a witcher? And Geralt of all witchers? I dunno about that idea, seems like just a pure meme quest then.

They need to have it set that the stats reflect what you are at. Maybe have a special perk that makes it unique.
Kinda like WoW heirloom gear that you can use at level 1 but still be relevant as you level cause it raises with you.
ID: h58i2vbIn the Witcher universe that wouldn't be very lore friendly though.
The best swords in the Witcher are new ones, made with the most up to date techniques. An ancient family sword being shit compared to a new one is actually consistent.
ID: h58u6byIt's like if they gave you a computer as a reward. No one wants the one your grandpa used to play Minesweeper.
ID: h58vvj9Unless its a gnonish gwyhyr. There is still the whole "ancient is better if built by the ancientest" thing.

I can't stand the way leveled items (and enemies) work in Witcher 3, and in other games that copied it after it got huge. I'm looking at you, last three Assassin's Creeds
ID: h58ywpiYeah, it's like:
"We don't want to put a character skill into our games"
"OK, then how will we make it seem like progress?"
"We'll just level up the weapons."
So you either end up with WIII situations ("So, the rusty guard's sword I just got is ten times more powerful than the Legendary Cheese Sword I got last Tuesday?") or SkyBlivion situations ("Isn't it amazing that now that I've been out of prison for two weeks every random shitty bandit has come across a stash of Daedric and Ebony and Glass gear, eh, when a fortnight ago all they could scrape together was an Iron dagger and some rags? My mere existence must be fucking amazing for the local economy.")
ID: h58kpdjI mean, Valhalla technically doesn't have leveled loot, just equipment you rank up.
ID: h58lnflOh? Could you go into more detail? Origins and Odyssey were so similar I never looked closely at Valhalla.

Sentimental steel does fectch a really good price
-
I wish there were more items like Aerondight that level up the more you use them. Wouldn't make much sense for swords you find in a chest out in buttfuck nowhere (aka Velen) but it'd work for items like this, where they're unique and there's lore behind them and such
ID: h58s65zWhen you think about it, there is no reason that that there is such a massive divide in strength between a level 1 velen sword and a level 40 crafted blade. Like yeah, there's shitty swords that break in the first battle and good quality ones that last generations...but until it breaks, a piece of sharp steel is a piece of sharp steel.
-
Usually theyre tagged as unique or have names so i like to keep them in player storages if there are any.

HEIRLOOM & PIECE
-
Upvote cause I literally did this yesterday
ID: h58xbjyI hope you sold it at Kaer Trolde
-
Every time I find a unique item in RPGs I can’t avoid but keeping it just for the fact that it’s unique. Selling it always feels like erasing the existence of something that I’ll never see again in the game
-
People that sell low level weapons of significant storyline value are heartless.
What else are you going to put up on the walls of Corvo Bianco if not the story swords?
-
What's a hairloom? Is something you ask your barber for?
ID: h58m65tNo, it's for weaving a carpet out of hair.
-
If I ever get to work on a large scale RPG that allows modding, I'd definitely push to include a set of assets or premade "museum" building that the player can store stuff like this in. Needs must as usual, but I'd love to have an easy way to hold on to stuff like this and display it.
Whenever I play games like this, I'm always conscious of the "first" things I get, or other items with special importance. A set of armour i used for an extended time, first high end/rare material weapon, sentimental quest rewards, lore-significant legendary items, the first weapon i forged using blacksmithing etc etc.
This goes especially well for Elder Scrolls series. I remember making a museum mod (basically a large room with display cases and mannequins) that you could access via trapdoor from a favoured player home.
-
wow i dismantled it for sapphire just now... LOL
winter something is what the sword is called
-
I wish the Witcher 3 had a transmog system so I could keep my awesome stats but still roleplay the way I want to.
