With the price drop on Amazon (US) for the 5800x, does it belong back in the conversation on which CPU to get for [mostly] gaming? I'm looking to upgrade my 3600 to one of these processors now that I've acquired a 6900xt. I mostly play competitive shooters (at 1440p) and know either processor will do. And I also know the gains over the 3600 will not be massive as the 3600 still holds its own quite well. Just curious what your thoughts were with the 5800x price decrease.

Same perf for now, but 5800x will last you longer. Depends on when do you plan your next upgrade.

I went with 5600x mainly for gaming. I read 5800 runs extremely hot. Yhe 5600x runs nicely with my Noctua NH D15
ID: h6f4mv7ID: h6et59gThe 5600x is just as hot at as the 58 really. My 5600x shot my 212 evo straight to 95C. So I just went ahead and swapped to a 5800x with a 240 aio. For whatever reason, my bench scores jumped nearly 50%(well I moved to liquid cooling and the 5800x was just a much better sample).

I have a 5800x. At $400 it is a smoking deal. Best buy will price match micro center. That's $379 just over $400 after tax.

5900x or wait for AM5. I don't see a point in upgrading a 6 core to another 6 core or even 8. A 5900x is actually the better deal now that its MSRP or lower. Upgrading my 3600 to 5900x right now, its in the mail!

ID: h6ephmxActually the 5900x has better temps. Both CPU's have the same TDP, but having the cores spread in two CCD's makes it easier to dissipate the heat.

I would hold until the prices drop, 3600 is still good CPU. But if you really want to upgrade now, i'd go for 5600X.

At this point wait for the verison with 3D stacked memory. it should come out before the end of the year, spending 300$ or more for these CPUs while there also is going to be a launch, maybe even in Q3, doesn't seem a great move. Alzo going for zen 3D you would buy the best you could get for AM4

ID: h6exd35Yeah, but he doesn't strictly need it, he already has 3600 which is good enought. If he wants to squeeze every FPS out of his GPU buying a 400$ CPU to then have a better one coming out 2 months after is not a good experience.
Also the production of the zen 3 chiplet has caught up with demand, the CPUs have always in stock in the last months

5800x has been back in the conversion for months now.
Over the last 3ish months; at one point the 5800x was in stock going for as low as 379 while the 5600x could only be found at 329. At those prices, the 5800x was the easy choice.
I saw simliar pricing many times while i was checking stock waiting for a 5900x to show up. Tho often times it was more like 320 vs 400; which is still less/core for the 5800x, which makes it attractive.

As soon as it dropped to $400 I just couldn’t help myself.

Just get the 5800x.
It is a better investment long-term so you won't have to upgrade again soon.

My microcenter had 10900kf for 330 dollars which for the price is an amazing price to performance cpu. If you have a local microcenter you could get a 10850k for 300 bucks potentially.

I would've been happier with the upgrade from a 3600X to a 5800X if the 5800X was ~$375. I bought in at $419, and after selling my 3600X the upgrade cost wasn't all that painful. You should be able to sell your 3600 very quickly, so at $400 it's really not a bad deal.
I mostly made the change because I wanted a few more cores for DAW software. Since I game at 1440p with a 5700 XT, I was not expecting any gains at all.
My 3600X was a lottery winner, boosted 2 cores to 4525MHz and ran at 4300Mhz all-core with PBO and outbenched most 3600XT's. So for the most part, as I expected, there were no gains in games with more modern engines and API's. I'd call the improvement in the 1% lows noticeable, but only barely.
However, there were also some unexpected ~30% gains in some games at 1440p. (Arma 3, Planet Coaster, BeamNG)
Personally I would go for the 5800X, the 2 extra cores are nice.
