This is what depression looks like
ID: h6ig5nsWhen I was depressed there was much more tossing and turning in bed. I have a hard time sleeping well when depressed.
ID: h6itkceand then you're tired the whole day
ID: h6io07yGetting the motivation to even get up and turn the computer on is hard with depression.
I swear I sat in bed and watched hours of mindless YouTube because it took less effort than turning on a game I knew I couldn't focus on.
Edit: I'd like to let you guys know I'm okay and have an amazing girlfriend that gets me out of the house and motivated to do things every day!
ID: h6iyp7uSigh... that’s why I Reddit...
ID: h6iunyzI lived this for a very long time (over 2 decades). For anyone currently living this: try something different because what you're doing isn't working.
If you keep doing what you're doing, you will keep getting the same result, and you will lose a large chunk of your life like me. You are the only person who can change things in your own head and the first step is choosing to try to break out of the cycle that you're in. What breaking the cycle means will be different for everyone but the first step in your head is the same. Do not be discouraged if the first thing you try doesn't seem to help. Try giving it more time or try something else. Just don't keep doing the same things.
Things to try:
Get exercise. Get on a regular sleep cycle where you go to bed and wake up at the same time every day. (I discounted these first two items for a long time and said they were dumb, but they have been immensely beneficial to my mood) See a therapist or psychologist for talk therapy (CBT and mindfulness were helpful for me) See a psychiatrist to explore medication options (be wary of any psychiatrist that does not pursue talk therapy at the same time or writes you a prescription after just 1 short conversation) Read about depression and what's helpful for others. You probably feel like you're alone and nobody understands (and that's true, nobody understands the specific details of you), but there are people who want to help and can give you helpful advice. Talk to friends or family about your feelings -- anyone that you trust who won't judge you for how you feel and who you are.I'm not going to pretend like it means anything if I tell you I love you, because I'm a stranger on the internet. But I know someone in your life loves you even if you don't recognize it or they haven't told you.

I understand that this is supposed to be a joke, but it is about a real issue that a lot of people are struggling with. This sort of behavior stems from our feelings of hopelessness and is our way of escaping the real world.
I would suggest looking at what is exactly making you feel this hopeless and try to understand it. Also anyone stuck in a similar cycle of addictive behavior might benefit from looking for tools to break out of this pattern of automation. I've found meditation to be a simple practical tool that helps me be more "present" and think more clearly.
For anyone that found themselves relating to this post I hope you find a better way.
ID: h6ipfugWhat if your feeling of hopelessness stems from realizing that this world really is hopeless
ID: h6ita9sThink in a more Micro scale and look towards available options that could lead to a change or changes that would fix your cycle.
ID: h6iv3iaI used to think like that and unfortunately that is a very dominant narrative in society, but have you ACTUALLY looked into things that make you think that, or could that be an, at least on some level, emotional reaction based on what we keep seeing in entertainment, news, social media etc.?
Here is a conversation that might be uplifting to hear to some people:
(it also contains a book recommendation, although I haven't gotten around to it yet. So many books to read.)
Btw. I don't want to seem like I'm dismissing why you would feel that way. It is completely understandable, and like I said I have felt that way as well for a long time, and we all have heavy burdens in our lives that do wear us down sometimes to the point that we feel like we can't go on.
I would suggest, if you feel there could still be things to learn, to really work at very clearly identifying to yourself what EXACTLY is making you feel this way and then look into those things. For example questions about philosophy (how you view the world) or your personal life or your past (psychology).
