- Have you ever seen a 4D video player in a game?!
-
It's missing depth, so I think that still counts as 3D
ID: h7hmrjjID: h7h4vb7Fair point. I say 4D, but I just switch one space dimension with time, as we can only see in 3D.
If we're being picky, it's not even 3D as you look at the video on your phone/computer, which is a 2D flat screen.
ID: h7h55ziQuestion, if it's in vr would we then consider it as 4d?

I am an indie dev, publishing my first virtual exhibition on Steam the 26th August:
The Shape of Time
It's a 20-30 minutes long visit that will make you see time as never before.
After one year of hard work on my free time, I'm really proud of the result. If you're interested, you can put it on your wishlist, it helps a lot!
Any feedback is appreciated.
ID: h7gy72cIm assuming this is different than just chopping up images and lining them up like a flip book. Can you explain how it is?
ID: h7h0f5tIt's a difficult task as I'm not a native english speaker but I'll give it a shot:
I use a video as a texture, apply it to a plane and I emit particles from the plane, where the video texture is applied, and I move the plane while the video is playing. Each particle inherits the color of the video in the random position it is created.
I hope this makes sense?

Looks awesome. But still just 3D
ID: h7h9xw8It’s stimulating a 4d space by making the player walk forward to represent progression of time while a 3D video plays in front of them. It’s obviously impossible to really make something appear 4D but I’d say this is a pretty close generalization.
ID: h7hcxguThe video is only 2D, which is why it's still just 3D. Instead of 3 space dimensions it's 2 space dimensions and 1 time dimension.
ID: h7hgrhdI would love to have an explanation, English isn't my first language so I might assum wrongly but
How can you represent the progression of time when time doesn't actually progress per se Isn't this just a succession of 3d layers more than 4d?
-
That's nice
-
i'm addicted to watching this for some reason (._.)
-
Have you played Braid? If not, you might be interested in its treatment of time.
ID: h7hgvdbnever played, I'll check it
ID: h7hji68One of the best indie games of all time. I think you’ll really like it.

I like where this is going, but I'm not seeing 4D here, just 3D. Without context, it's not appealing unless you're lined up at the correct spot. What are you going for?
-
Nope, and I still haven't
-
Important to point out the extra dimension here is of time, not space. 4 spatial dimensions would be something entirely different.
-
I feel like you could make a sick puzzle game out of this
ID: h7hho2tIt's my dream, although the way I envision it is far too ambitious for a one man job.
-
Super Mario maker bro
-
That's not 4d that's just a Microsoft 98 when you dashed a window
-
But why
-
Imagine what we look like in 4D - a whole life - like very long oscillating meta-snakes because we switch from horizontal to vertical posture every 12h and randomly mixed with thousands of other meta-snakes
-
Looks very cool. I love seeing experiments and new mechanics. Well done!
I don't think these types of posts get enough praise. It's experimenting with new mechanics that gives us the best new games. Keep it up!

Yes still 3D: width, height are like in standard 3D and if depth is representing time, it’s still a standard depth dimension in this 3D space projected on our 2D screens
