It was 1996 in Ukraine, and we were using chinese NES-clones rebranded in neighbouring Russia under 'Dendy' name. Cracked Aladdin was dope!

I think I saw a boob on one of those channels
ID: h86l5e1This instantly brought back memories of the one time the scrambled channel unscrambled and was inverted color and black and white.....
Ahh memories
ID: h87342bOr the mosaic channel that showed all the channels in little tiny boxes all together, with several paid channels shown in their unscrambled form cycling on a timer in the same box, only one of which showing softcore nudity at best.
But still, every 30 seconds was 10 seconds of tiny unscrambled glorious hurried purpose, then 20 seconds of keeping it together somehow.
ID: h877hdjI discovered on accident by channel surfing on picture-in-picture that it can unscramble channels. That was how I spent watching Disney Channel in a 4in X 4in square and listening to the distorted sound on the main scrambled screen.
ID: h8789r3Remember when Satellite Tv came to UK. If the dish was pointed a certain way and weather was good, you could pick up some foreign ‘mature’ channels.
ID: h86llv4This reads like the story a friend told me in the 90s where they booted doom and Duke 3d at the same time and they claimed the graphics from doom where inside Duke3d..
ID: h87hp6bAt my parents house when I was a kid, the scrambler was at ground level. A disgruntled cable technician told us this, any time we want free "full package" cable while only paying for basic cable, just unscrew this black tube. So we did that for 10 years.
ID: h87c9ygOur cable provider did a shit job scrambling cinemax and it was a widely known thing that you basically got free softcore after 11. Color was weak, picture was grainy, and no sound, but otherwise entirely watchable.
ID: h874ilxSpice channel, channel 42.
ID: h879kfpIt was channel 98 in my area back then and Adam and Eve channel was 99.
ID: h8757f6I pleasured myself to more snow than that and called it a good day in those times. It was all we had.
ID: h875lfuI wonder if there is a kink for signal scrambled porn.
ID: h87aaun"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times..."
ID: h87ay7aYup you'd mostly just see a thrusting ass and you had to imagine the rest.
ID: h87fh0tFirst night I got my own TV in my room I found that I could somehow pick up the picture from my older brothers video player.
Seems my brother had a pretty extensive collection of specialist European films.
Now I think back on it I guess he must have been doing the same thing as me while watching them.....
I really wish I hadnt just remembered that.
Think I need to go and take a shower.
ID: h87bvi8That reminds me of an old Reddit story from long ago. Kid in his teens had no access to porn back when TVs had scrambled channels. He managed to find a scrambled channel that showed some skin and was able to get off to it. As he was about to climax the channel come into clarity and found out it was Mexican wrestling.
ID: h87c1umA friend told me..there where scrambled porn channels you could pick up occasionaly ... there wasnt the internet yet..

1986? This was me in 2007
ID: h86t0nyNintendo is timeless
ID: h877usaA mix between that and growing up poor.
ID: h874dpvFor real. PS2 was still AV cables and CRT TV's (or if you had a VCR, you would hook it up through that) and I was still playing the shit outa it in the late 2000's even though I had a 360.

Channel 4 was the Google Page 2 of the time.
ID: h871p0cChildhood me always wanted to know why there was no channel 1.
Never bothered to find out that one.
ID: h876heyApparently the frequencies that comprised Channel 1 were used for too many other things, messing with the ability to deliver a good picture.
ID: h86pe92The UHF dial was the bing of its day
ID: h87fbruBut all the food shit was on UHF.
Fox was channel 49, UHF. How else were you gonna get you Simpsons, Married with Children, , Mad TV, and In Living Color fix?
ID: h86wxrkI always flipped my RF switch to channel 4. I was something of a rebel.
ID: h873ow3Shit never thought I'd meet a serial killer in real life.
ID: h87ff2jPeople that used Ch 4 sold children in the basement of pizza shops.

This was me, only 1995
ID: h87nw2n1993 for me.

Ah... Spice channel
ID: h87a3wiRainy days made miracles happen, boy I tell you hwhat.
-
I had that negative image on the Spice channel back in the day.
Ahhhh, memories…

Accurate. If we're splitting hairs, the resolution and/or crispness of the Mario screen is a little too good for what I remember CRT's looking like though.
ID: h86m7scSince we're hair-splitting, very few people had to "find" a channel in 1986. For most of us the dial only went up to 13. You were never more than 6 channels away and could easily see exactly where 3 was.
ID: h86p0p3Yep. The scrambling wasn't a thing until cable-ready tvs. Those weren't really common until the 90s IIRC.
-
Those where the days. Using a screwdriver to find the right frequency…

All I see is a sailboat.
ID: h870kkzMommy, it's a schooner!!!
ID: h879ajuFun fact: the magic eye poster in mallrats actually just shows some geometric shapes when viewed. They didn't make a stereogram that matched the script.

It's 1986, I'm in the first grade-

"The sky above the port was the color of television, tuned to a dead channel.”
-
Trying?
Turn the knob or press the button, there was no trying..
-
Static.. static... HBO... porn... static... Mario!
-
Funny thing is, things haven't changed that much. Now you're just looking for HDMI (at least on my TV.)
ID: h878l0uIt's auto saved on the home screen for me, I have my inputs all organized and unused inputs hidden.
-
Damn does this bring back memories.
That was a life skill right there.

Did you have Dendy64?
