Still not showing more of the cast is a bit of a disappointment, character interactions are a big part of the appeal of these games for me.
ID: gpy1en9ID: gpyew2nYeah, feels like forever ago this game was announced, and this trailer just showed us the same thing as before... the same two characters, who are both very serious. I hope that in skits and with the rest of the cast they open up.
ID: gpykdlgEnd of trailer says more news in spring 2021, so I'm guessing/hoping we'll see an actual full length trailer and hopefully a release date.
ID: gq23fuzI see people here never followed a tales game.
They always keep the cast to the main protagonist(s) until they are nearing release, and trickle the other members in Famitsu articles. Berseria for a long time was just vevet velvet, and just didn't show off the rest of the characters until some 4 months before the game released.
ID: gq54ov3And the main protags are so... main protags. At least Berseria tried something new with it, but here we go again.
But if they will make another Magilou-level of side character, i will forgive them everything.
ID: gpy2jszThats why why I fear this game is going "tales of souls" if this game is going to abandon the traditional gameplay style and go for a solo game.

More news in spring
Yeah, those rumors of the Bandai Namco NEXT presentation are looking more and more real. Its coming lads.
ID: gpynwpwCareful, with those words you might summon a specific sub.
ID: gq2z7u3Bandai Namco NEXT
Have they announced when it is?
ID: gq02sg0I thought we're in spring already.

I love the tales games but it was the older era styles (Symphonia, Abyss, Vesperia) that caught my heart. Will be really interesting to see where they take thigns with this one.
I really enjoyed Xillia and the games that came after, but the introduced mechanics that removed the 4 player coop nature of it never felt the best to me.
ID: gpyyp8kI loved the 2D ones, I can't stand the battle system in the 3D ones.
ID: gpyun5pFunny, Abyss was the one that turned me off the series completely. There was so much padding and the story was so bad that it ruined the series for me.
ID: gq5vozuTales feels like the last holdout for jrpgs combat wise. Final fantasy plays it self, atelier gave up turn base in favor of button mashing and I really hope tales doesn't end up doing something similar.
ID: gpzuohsThe problem is that with each entry, they try to one-up the gameplay of the previous, with more and more systems.
I liked Symphonia and Vesperia (not Abyss, but that's for plot reasons), and enjoyed Xillia well enough.
But then you get Graces which just felt godawful to play IMO. And then there's Zestiria- I was 15 hours into Zestiria and it was STILL giving me regular battle tutorials (and refreshers on the basics), because the game was 3 or 4 layers of Rock Paper Scissors mechanics on top of each other. It was so needlessly complex to a point where it wasn't actually fun to try and battle properly- it was work.
Berseria held my attention for a bit longer but I also dropped it, because while its battles were more fun*, you couldn't go 5 feet without a skit or some plot happening, and it didn't feel like I was playing a game. I was either watching an anime where I kept having to fight enemies to get to the next scene, or I was playing an RPG where I couldn't progress because I had to sit through 2 minutes of character banter every 5 minutes.
*I specifically remember playing as Magilou- I don't tend to play as anyone but the main character, but Magilou had this thing going on where she could absorb spells being cast near her, and build up some sort of meter, and instant-cast spells using it, or something, and I was in a battle in an area with tons of magic casters, and it was just a constant unending stream of absorbing spells and casting my own and it felt so fucking cool
Each subsequent game just feels like it gets more cluttered than the last.
Also, Vesperia was the series Peak. It had all the good features from Symphonia, improved on the others that it had, the weapon system and skill systems were wonderful, the characters were great, the pacing was pretty good...
ID: gq10zppI agree, sort of.
Symphonia, Abyss, and Vesperia were great. Even Legendia had great writing, though the battle system was ass.
Xilia was... Xillia was good. It was okay. I liked it.
Xillia 2 I didn't care much for, but it had its moments. And then the series nosedived faster than I have ever seen a series nosedive. Tales of Zestiria is the worst RPG I have ever played, and possibly the worst gaming experience I have ever had. Berseria was better, but it wasn't better enough to make up for just how awful Zestiria was.
Series is dead to me now, sadly, as a near lifelong fan. Arise would have to get 10/10s across the board to even be worth looking at.
ID: gpz0ahkSame here. I wanted to like Berseria but that art style bothered me.
-
Japanese voices for those who are interested in them.
ID: gpyq0llFor once, I think I actually might like the English VA more. Also, does anyone else think they sound kinda rushed/sped up in this trailer or am I imagining it?
-
Looking very Tales-ish. More news in Spring huh.
Spring 2021 starts on Saturday, March 20, 2021 (in 13 days) and ends on Monday, June 21st 2021 (in 106 days)
Damn Bandai Namco, would it kill you to commit to a date... or even a month?
ID: gpzeaanAt least they gave a year.
-
Not much was show so far. But I can't say that I'm not excited by this new "Tales of". As it finally look like they are moving the series further instead of just a new iteration of the old formula.
-
Have they said anything about coop in this one yet?
That massively influences my interest (between pass and almost certainly buy).
ID: gpxzj6hunrelated but thanks for those good ass falcom ports homie
no word on co-op yet, little to no word in general regarding arise
ID: gpy3ejgHave they said anything about coop in this one yet?
Nope.
ID: gpy407lI highly doubt they'd drop co-op from Tales. It sort of feels like one of its 'things'.
ID: gpy9ofpI would hope if anything they would put in online co op. Its already possible in old games via third party software
ID: gq15p6qKindred souls. I've been watching like a hawk for the news.
ID: gq251z0we know very little of the combat, or anything outside the larger premise of the story. this is only trailer since the original E3 2019 reveal.
-
Art style looks nice, when the game was first revealed it I thought it was just another game in the Xillia/Zestiria engine but it actually looks like something between the Zestiria style and Valkyria Chronicles look.
ID: gpy77zdI believe this is the first true PS4/XBone generation Tales game (Berseria had a PS3 release I think) so hopefully we have a new engine to go with it.
-
Whats gameplay like in this? I tried Tales of vesperia and just couldn't get into the combat
-
Looks interesting. Zestiria was Good and Berseria was very good, hopefully this can continue the upward trend for the series.
-
I feel like this trailer didn't actually do anything apart from show us the game still exists. I'd love to see more characters other than the main two! I'm a very character focused when it comes to my enjoyment of story aspects, so please show us more Bamco!
Also, I hope these two aren't just the po-faced overly serious types they appear to be. I hope that once you get get into the story that they are more light hearted/well rounded in character.
I don't wanna be overly critical, as I love the series. But damn am I apprehensive so far based on the little we've seen.
-
Alright so that’s Erica Lindbeck for sure as the female protagonist& I don’t recognize the male protagonist voice but someone said Noctis from FF15, that’s maybe the only one I’m sceptical of however....based on this trailer alone this is some good VO for a tales game. Maybe we can get a taste of the quality we got with the original vesperia & abyss.
The glory days can return!
ID: gpyfi0vNarrator is Patrick Seitz and male protag is most definitely Ray Chase, Noctis.
ID: gpydmfzYeah it's 100% Erica. I heard Futaba as soon as she spoke. Excited for it, she's an excellent voice actress.
-
Looks pretty good imo. I actually enjoyed beseria's story although the combat got kinda too eh for me in the end. Hope its good.
-
Apparently nobody at bandai namco knew that "arise" is a verb, not a noun. And that "tale of arise" makes no sense in English
-
That was not a good trailer. It was so bland, and just so choppy, almost like those old fighting games where the character would walk on stage and just say some meaningless BS.
-
lol, the first 10 seconds and last 12 seconds of the trailer are splash screens. It's only 72 seconds long. That means fully 30% of the trailer is splash screens. Yeesh.
-
They still haven't showed a real slice of gameplay yet so I'm not sure what to make of it just yet, but I'm glad they're being ambitious and different after being disappointed with every game since Vesperia/Innocence/Graces.
-
The dub is actually really good. I usually switch to the Japanese VA since they sound more natural but the English VA in this trailer is amazing.
This might be the first tales game I play were I stick to English.
ID: gq2votlI don't get this please explain the dun sounds atrocious it's generic American with attempt at applying tone or adjusting accents for the theme. The deep American accent doesn't fit the characters appearances at all and placed their voices more in the modern era.
It literally sounds like a guy voicing a modern action film.
Look at English voice acting in Games like final fantasy xiv that's good voice work with varied accents and tones to fit the setting not everyone sounds like their from the US in the year 2021
-
Is this game coming to ps5 though? I'd love to play it with instant loading screens
-
If this is actually one of tales of games then it looks FU*KING PHENOMENAL , i wanna dig in straight away just from graphics alone , holy smokes it looks good !
ID: gq0huyasame here. i agree.
-
I don’t know why, but I have the feeling that nothing will come close to Symphonia for me, none of them have grabbed me the way that did.
ID: gq25c7017 years can change a lot of your tastes.
ID: gq0iybwi had a gamecube, since i was a big nintendo fan. i played so many jrpgs on a friends ps2, but there were non for GC. i waited ages, delay after delay for final fantasy, crystal chrinicles...i consumed every bit of information...only to receive the biggest game disappointed of my life. and right during that time symphonia got released at the end of 2004....i was hyped. and i played and loved it. i still like the ending scene if you truly understood the game. it was powerful. but honestly, symphonia wasnt such a good game. it borrowed so much from the first game, tales of phantasia, yet it delivered a worse story.
-
Really excited for the game. Even though it was a really small trailer and I hoped they showed more, I think it didn't look that bad.
Hoping the next trailer shows the rest of the cast and some gameplay more in detail.
-
It's been so long since they announced this and they've showed so little since that I've almost lost all interest.
-
Over a year of waiting and this is what we get? No gameplay, dated graphics, and an announcement for an announcement.. Hard to say I'm not disappointed. I really want this game to be good but I'm starting to worry.
ID: gpxtziaDated graphics? This looks great for an anime game, except for the aliasing
ID: gpxx8fjLots of people who would know are saying 2021 is going to be the real "covid delay" year and to expect an anemic release schedule. It would not surprise me at all if they were able to make very little progress on the game in the past year.
Gist was it's easier to work from home on a mostly-complete game that needs polishing (i.e. stuff that released in 2020) than games that are still in the thick of systems and content development.
-
Would be excited if they show more gameplay. Still not feeling the "Tales of souls" vibe the earlier trailers gave. Did not like Berseria's gameplay much either. Just feels like Tales of has become less fun to play lately.
-
I love the Tales series but they failed to release a game that was developed for the last generation. We are now on Next gen and they have finally moved from PS3. I can't stand by a series who are a whole generation behind.
ID: gq3hps4They are always a generation behind, for installed base purposes.
Bamco feels they can develop a good product at lower costs for a higher installed base, thats the play they always make.
Frusturating, I agree, but its how theyve operated since Zestiria now.
ID: gq26252the game was revealed 2019 and scheduled for a 2020 release, likely before PS5 launched
then... 2020 happened. sucks, but I'd rather a "delay into next gen" than pulling a Cyberpunk.
-
And to think, this is the second high profile JRPG in recent years to feature a male protagonist who grows a big sword by touching the heroine's chest.
edit: you guys did not like that one, huh
ID: gq25xmgyou can argue zestiria did it first lol. Except Lailah is the sword.
-
Why the hell can't Japanese companies find someone to properly localize titles?
What is it with these turbodumb titles?
ID: gpyv0rkFor the record, as someone who works in localization - different dev teams have different tolerances for what they’ll allow you to change. A game’s title is often not one of them.
ID: gpyvi6sIt honestly sounds like some grad student made an AI to generate generic game titles.

Yeah, the overarching plots have usually been okay at best, but the characters tend to be what makes the Tales series stand out so much. It's the franchise that popularized the skit system, so I hope they don't forget character dynamics in pursuit of a bigger story.
