- The 3 most distinctive and unique FINAL FANTASY games:
-
Final Fantasy Tactics would like a word with you.
ID: hucyviiID: hud8214Tactics is the best Final Fantasy to this day.
-
IX? I love IX, one of my favorite FF games but it’s hardly unique. A huge selling point for the game was the fact that it was a return to roots
ID: huczfeqUnique for the generation that has only played from VII and up.
ID: huczecsAgreed, come to say the same. Incredible game, but a return to medieval fantasy.
ID: hud5e8gI was gonna say: I recall my friends at the time (who had started on VII) complaining about IX being too different from the other games in the series.
And I'm sitting there, a fan since the original game, all "G'huh?!"
ID: hud7z9cI think OP added 9 just because the graphics and characters look more “childish” and cartoony compared to the usual mature-looking characters, kind of like LoZ Windwaker.
But yeah, I agree that 9 isn’t one of the most unique games and has a lot of elements from the original.
-
Those are 3 games in my top 3/5, but I don't know how any of them is more unique or distinctive than other entries.
ID: hucz8xvThe combat System in VIII was so different than anything else they've ever done, with the Junction/GF system and the draw magic system. XII took away the turned based combat among other things, IX wasn't at all it returned to the roots of the earlier games
-
Hot take because I'm going to level here, one of the charms of FF for me is how (since at least 4) the aesthetics, themes and world building of each game are drastically different.
FF7 still stands out as it shifted the series from a pure fantasy (with very light steampunk vibes in 6) - qnd occasional nods to sci fi (omega) - it was still far more fantastical. FF7 went to full gear as a sci-fi/modern era take that featured everything from motorcycles named after Daytona, to sweeping cities with subways and q megatropolis that is still one of the most instantly recognizable cities in all of video gaming history. After that, the settings of 8 or XIII don't seem as extreme in jumps. Again, I think the strengths of FF is that pretty much each one is a "unique" title, which is why it can be so divisive for contending favorite FFs.
-
In general, settings were much more varied starting with VI.
-
Every entry past 5 is fairly unique and distinctive in their own respects.
-
I love final fantasy VIII. It's my favourite and I always think that it didn't have the credit that deserves.
-
IX pays homage to what made final fantasy ... ‘Fantasy’ . Nevertheless, it will always have my heart ❤️
-
Absolute VIII love, underrated gem
-
In a way. I think almost every final fantasy is unique besides 1-5, and those are pretty unique in their own ways.
-
Uh, no; but ok.
-
Uhhhh IX isn't that unique. I would daresay XIII is more unique than IX. IX was a return to form of old school sword and sorcery fantasy with sci-fi story elements.
-
8 is by far my favorite game. 9 is great also. Never played 12, stopped at 10.
ID: hud6dt8Why did you stop at X? Just curious
-
My top three FF games, what a coincidence!
I see a lot of people saying 9 isn't unique, but I strongly disagree. The art style makes that game feel so different from the other FF games.
-
I'd argue that 9 is one of the least "distinct". It was created as a celebration and a throwback to the series as a whole
-
7
-
I have FF12 collectors edition with the steelbook case for the PS2 but I always seem to run into trouble in some parts, I still think it’s pretty cool but I just couldn’t get very far story wise
ID: hud2gmzYou should try again definitely. Beautiful gem
-
Final Fantasy IX is a lot of things, but distinctive and unique are not among them.
-
I feel like of those three, 8 takes the cake.
ID: hud1vo1the vomit cake right?
-
XII isn't at all a unique game. Same for IX.
II and XIII are way more unique.
And I agree with VIII
-
FF8 borrows heavily from FF2. That's why Squall's last name is Leonheart.
ID: huczypyI think they named him that way cause it sounds cool. It doesn't relate much to leon of ffII as a character
ID: hud3yruWhat else does it borrow though?? I never got a feel of FF2 in FF8
-
Three places are not enough
ID: hud1jl27, 11, 13, 14, 15
-
Uh, yeah definitely not...
-
9 is fantastic, but it's the opposite of unique. FF2, 15, or Tactics (unless you just want main titles) should swap in for it.
-
Lol ooh boy, get ready for an army of Tifa obsessed fan boys to down vote the shit outta this.
ID: hud0vfpCrazy how people can be so dismissive of a game that quite literally revolutionized the series, as well as the genre.
-
If I had to pick 3, I would go with VIII, XI, and XV personally.
-
Fran
-
Doesn’t XII take place in the same universe as Tactics?
ID: hud6555A 1000 years apart
-
The 4 unique ones are FF3 (actual characters and names), FF6 (masterpiece, doesn't quite fit unique), FFX (fully 3D and voice acted) and FF14 (MMORPG)
The rest are solid, but the ideas have been repeated vs a brand new come from nowhere idea.
-
12 is… I suppose unique…
Not necessarily in a good way lmaoooo
-
Final fantasy XIII would like like a word with ya
-
Not trying to shit but is 9 that unique?
It's essentially a tribute to the earlier fantasy FF correct?
I don't remember anything "new" about it...
But it's also the one of played the least.
-
I agree with 8...very unique setting and aesthetic.
But 9 and 12? Those both play up classic fantasy + steampunk, they are done really well tho.I think the real winner of this would be FF13. Set inside a huge floating sphere that holds the entire population of the planet and is set to be crashed into the lower planet because the demi-gods hope that it will re-summon the creator of the universe from the amount of deaths caused. An event so extreme it distorts time. FF13 was ahead of it's time.
-
Debatably distinctive, but not much uniqueness between 8 and 9. Now if you put Tactics in place of 9, I might have agreed.
-
IX was a love letter to early FF's. It's my favourite FFIX or has been for a long time(maybe VIIR now?). But it's really not unique.
VIII certainly was.
XII wasn't. It's was reminscent of some early ones with the MMO feel which XI had.
-
I had an interesting experience with FFVIII. I played it after VI and VII (having loved both) and found myself extremely put off by just about every aspect of VIII. I didn’t like the characters, I didn’t like the combat, I didn’t like the junction system, I didn’t like drawing and I didn’t like the story. I made it a little past the end of disc one and put it down for a couple months.
But then I picked it back up and something just clicked. The junction system seemed to make more sense, the characters started feeling deeper and the story finally grabbed me. By the end, I kind of loved it. I still don’t think it’s among my favorites but it’s a game I respect the hell out of. Square made some bold choices with that one and I always appreciate it when artists take those kinds of risks.

Change 8 to 6
-
6 felt like a mixture between 7 and 9 but leaning more towards 7
-
Not really.

I LOVE Tactics, the original on the PS1 is easily one of my all-time favorite games let alone FF. Such a masterpiece
